No, really. Just stop using bufferpools, use the HIGHMEMFIX and remove that affinitymask bloat from your configs and you already earned 20fps only there. Then 2 or 3 more tweaks (actual tweaks, not inventions) and you're ready to go. Obviously this requires good hardware, not top of the range, but good and still affordable hardware.

I personally use BP=0 with great effect, but I agree with your overall point. People read all these guides, start stacking tweaks on tweaks, when it's not needed and can hurt things in the end.

HIGHMEMFIX, BP=0, and FFTF=.10 with frames locked at 30 internally is about all I run and I've tryed every tweak there is. This simple, non bloated setup gives me the best smoothness in all situations.

I'm copying the link for this thread for those FSXer's that continue to ask why some of us still use FS9...

Because FS9 doesn't have the NGX, REXE, or Orbx scenery he wants to use? Because FS9 doesn't produce the visual quality he's seeking?

If he simply set up FSX to look like FS9 looks, lowering all the settings a ton, he'd have no issues with performance. But he wants more then FS9 can begin to offer and he wants the incredible detail you get in Orbx regions in FSX. That's the entire point.

To achieve that '1', compromises and tweaks have to be made. OP says he's followed the tweaks. Can you tell us where your sliders are?

Compromise yes, absolutely. That's essential.  In my opinion, we should adjust our sliders so that we achieve the minimum frame rate we deem acceptable, in the most demanding scenario we are likely to regularly encounter. So I would call it being sensible and realistic. It's pointless to have high sliders if our frame rates are not acceptable. It's about accepting our systems, and FSX's, limitations. Obviously if others with comparable systems are getting better results, then it makes sense to investigate why.

Some of my sliders are high, some of them are medium. AI I have low, out of preference. Autogen is dense, water is almost max at 2.x. The known frame rate killer bloom is off. AA is high enough to reduce shimmering to an acceptable level. My frame rate lock is right up at 50, and only drops just below 30 occasionally, in the NGX with extreme weather.

Essentially, what we deem acceptable is somewhat subjective. For me, low frame rate is unacceptable, and I don't desire extreme eye candy at the expense of performance. I much prefer a smooth sim and high frame rates than the luxury of hyper detailed airports and scenery. Visually the sim looks great to me and that's all I need. It's always worth remembering that we can't have our cake and eat it.

My system is...

i7 3770K at 4.5 GHz.

GTX 580

8 GB RAM.

I run... REX, GEX, UTX.

Tweaks can cause more trouble than they fix. First thing anyone should try is absolutely no tweaks at all. My advice is to use the absolute minimum of tweaks, just the ones you have definitively proven to actually work on your system.

I use...

[bufferPools]

PoolSize=0

[Main]

FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.15

[JOBSCHEDULER]

AffinityMask=14

[GRAPHICS]

HIGHMEMFIX=1

That's all.

After tweaking tweaking tweaking and more tweaking I finally have my FSX running smooth. However I only have default scenery and a few freeware planes added. AI traffic at 75% airport traffic off  and zero road traffic. I can keep it at 30 FPS for the most part but if I fly into LAX or the like it will drop to 14 or 15. It's not as though my system is low end either.

 I'm hesitate to spend money on something like PMDG or FTX Global when it comes out because I fear it will turn it into a slide show. And I am so done with tweaking tweaking tweaking tweaking.

I think I'll just make do with what I have and cross my fingers that in a year or two somebody will make a flight sim that actually runs on todays PCs. ...I have tried XPlane...no THANKYOU!.....

Wow, simming truly doesn't have to be this way...

Those using X-Plane get better results than this.

I hope P3D 64Bit solves most of these performance problems. Is it true that some Aces team members are on the Lockheed P3D development team?

64-bit won't help, it would only fix those Out of memory errors. However P3D 2.0 will feature a new 3D engine which is supposed to be less CPU-bound and offload more work to the GPU. This is essential, since the GPU is tens or even hundreds of times faster at certain things that FSX lets the CPU do currently. Our GPUs are falling asleep while we play FSX/P3D 1.4, unless we use extreme levels of FSAA, ENB effects etc. to (barely) keep them awake.

As for X-Plane vs FSX, no point in going there. FSX will run just fine at 60 FPS with default scenery. The problems start when people add tons of AI, high detail scenery and airports from OrbX etc. as they are designed to push the FSX engine to its limits on the fastest CPU available today.

Precisely!

I wouldn't condemn any of the scenery add-on's, they are great products. But they are demanding, and we are bolting them on to an archaic engine. We have to remember that and configure our settings accordingly. We should not accept miracles.

Forgive my bluntness, Sid, but 4.2 GHz is not going to make you happy, as in order to get those "smooth at 30fps" you will have to roll back most of the nice graphics which your 680 could give you. How many times have we read - "FSX is processor-bound"???

A 680 matched to a slow 4.2 gig proc will allow Bufferpools=0. That's all.

If you will - please - put your hardware specs into your profile (at left, under your Avatar) and then copy your fsx.cfg here as "sidh_fsx.txt" (using the "More Reply Options - bottom-right) so that we can make a better guesstimate as to what direction is appropriate. We could use your Inspector settings, too, please.

Thanks.

Here is the cfg and I added hardware specs too.

Thanks for help

Well that's to be expected with AI at 75%.

AI irritates me anyway, so I have it right down at 10%.

With no ground traffic or ground vehicles I might as well go fly MS  Flight!  That's my point , all these standard features and I can't even touch them or it will be a slide show.

You could try enabling triple buffering via Nvidia Inspector. You'll also need VSync enabled in order for this to work. This is designed to help FPS drops and maintain a stable framerate instead of one which is all over the place. Also uses more VRAM than if you didn't have this turned on. However, since you have a GTX 680, you shouldn't have any issues.

in all seriousness - switch to Prepar3d - you won't look back.

Which p3d license I should go for? I can spend 50$ license.. Is it monthly bases? After 1 month i have to pay 50$ again? Also How about addons compatibility ?

Thanks

I agree that Prepar3D is "smoother". 20 FPS in P3D looks smoother than 30 FPS in FSX, because the lurching and micro-stuttering is gone. However the actual frame rate is not higher, so you still need an absolute top-end CPU or you have to accept some compromise with regards to the sliders and checkboxes.

My compromises are 50% AI traffic, 20% road traffic, water detail turned down one notch, and usually fly in clear weather. If you're going to fly IFR, you might as well turn your scenery settings right down, since you won't see the ground anyway...
