Orbx FTX Global Not DX10 compatible

Featured Replies

So happy to be using DX9! ^_^ But seriously, since a lot of people won't buy FTXG just because of the lights not working: 1. how often do you all actually fly at night and 2. you can use UTX lights or other addon lights... After all the night lighting is an added bonus!

The very funny thing is that Orbx only decided to add that new light system a day or so before creating the final release candidate... Imagine they hadn't done that and FTXG wouldn't have had this system at all... I really honestly thing that most if not all of you who are not buying it now because of this, would have bought FTXG... seriously! Tell me I am wrong! Would you have bought FTXG if you hadn't known about the night lighting system and if it hadn't been included at all?

Good point.

Steve fixed the Orbx PNW lights a while ago, and will no doubt be able to fix the issues with FTXG.

This is the key, right here...

(from JV)I have given Steve a copy of FTXG and shared our findings with him.

It is pretty obvious that JV is taking notice of Steve's very expert abilities with graphics programming, and I'm quite confident that this will lead to a solution very quickly.

I was feeling hopeful when I saw you asking John's e-mail in the ORBX forums, lol.

Let's hope it is indeed fixable and available soon!

Heya, Mark - y'know - if I flew anywhere outside of the pacific coast of the US, I would buy the darned addon, and test it using Steve's latest DX10Scenery Fixer app, but I have the Northern Rockies, the PNW and CRM, and am just waiting for NOR/SOCAL to be released.

That's where I fly, whether VFR or commercial!!! If the Eastern US/Canada were (Orbx) done I would fly there, too - and maybe even trans-continental flights, but I can't bring myself to justify $100 for "everywhere else" merely to test it.

However - I would put good money on a bet that the Fixer app will fix the problems that exist at this moment - and without further modification.

Lucky you Paul.

I'm sure you are now enjoying whatever Steve is cooking.

After reading most of his blog(research), I hopefully assume he can do it.

BTW: FTX Global made my FSX a new simulator. I am now flying all over Europe.

Time, is the one thing no one can buy.

Yea I know exactly what you mean. I did buy it after a lot of thinking, and mainly to fill up all the gaps.

The beauty is now that I've always wanted to fly in the Swiss Alps, but not enough to buy scenery for it. I have so many add-on scenery already.. And now with FTX Global I can go where ever i want and it looks great I have to say! I'm even thinking of removing some of my other scenery, because FTX Global looks better at some places.

No, I would not. And please don't presume that everybody flies the same way you do. Land textures alone are only marginally better than GEX IMHO and the highly efficient 3-D lighting was the the real value-add for me. If/when it works in cleanly DX10 (which I ALWAYS use), I'll buy it. Until then, it's UTX/GEX.

I'm not getting into any type of discussion on it, but how anyone can suggest that the FTX Global textures are in any way similar (in style or quality) to GEX is absolutely beyone me.....

I don't think anyone who owns FTX Global would state that view.

GEX look like really good ground textures, as really good ground textures looked in 2006.  FTXG looks state of the art.  (especially the autogen).

No pun intended but FTXG and GEX are "night and day"

Thanks for that bit of good news, Paul!   Hopes have been raised!

As for FTX Global, the night lighting is a big factor for me.  I don't have GEX or UTX and like Paul, do most of my flying in the FTX regions as well, (Along with Florida) so I am already flying in fantastic sceneries.   I did follow the development of FTX Global and it certainly does look good, but at this moment, with no night lighting, it isn't a must-buy for me.

Once the night lighting is fixed, I will take the plunge then.

24hrs in a day and over a 12 month period I probably fly 50% of my time during the day and 50% of it at night. At this time until its sorted, I don't see the benefit of paying for 100% of a product I can only use 50% of the time.

I contacted Beeteprint, the guys who make Experience X ...their nightnights( and even actually show the streetlamps) work perfect in DX10 mode and it is scaleable to how much or little you want....They made patches to make it work with UTX as well.

Their reply:

"Hello Steve, unfortunately our product is not compatible with Orbx.
The team ORBX does not respond  our emails and also ignore our desire to make ExperienceX be compatible with Orbx.
Sorry."

I guess FTX lead man is talking out of both sides of his mouth asking for help then refusing to work with other devs.....maybe they should rethink their stance eh?

They shouldn't have tried to make a hack of using trees for lights, it doesn't work because trees don't have lights....

Unfortunately now I can't use this addon anymore due to having installed FTXG.  I fly a lot at night kind of a bummer and really ###### me off for a $90.00 add-on.  DX9 drops me from 60+ fps to 35 and I really don't want to go back to OOMS and slower framerates.

The other thing is I don't want to hear how it's unfixable. If a 1 man dev team can make night lights using autogen and have it working perfect in DX 10 then there is absolutely zero excuse. Sorry I don't want to be fed any more BS

Steve McNitt

Well, they say they use a different method of displaying the lights. Not by the standard, but by using the autogen trees functionality. I don't know the reason for that, but their product isn't just textures, they also use a very different approach on some levels.

The issue is that with 'autogen trees'the alpha blending doesn't work.

I don't get it. Then all the trees should be with black boxes in dx10 mode.c
