Orbx FTX Global Not DX10 compatible

Featured Replies

Here is the entire post.

Hi All

Here's what i did to get around the black squares, using advice provided by hal9000 above.

First I navigated to my FSX Scenery Global Scenery directory:  C:\FSX\Scenery\Global\scenery

I then renamed the file 3D_Light_NEW_DDN_1_5.BGL  to  3D_Light_NEW_DDN_1_5.BGL.BAK.  This disables the file that DX10 cannot read correctly.

I also created a desktop icon to the FSX Scenery Global Scenery directory so that if required I can return to the file in a flash and rename it back.

I no longer have black squares during the day, and I can still fly at night if it takes my fancy.  At night-time I see a much reduced night lighting that is similar to the old night lighting, which has the night textures showing pools of light and lit up windows but no actual streetlights.  If I want to do a scenic night tour I still have the option of renaming the file back to its orginal BGL extension and then changing back to DX9.

Until a DX10 fix is sorted this is a good compromise I believe.

Thank you NCooper.  I think I'll hold on to my money until everything is sorted out by Orbx. It's a shame they can't come out with a fix soon for those that use DX10 exclusively. They are planning on waiting until the 1st service pack. There doesn't seem to be a sense of urgency to bring DX10 users to the fold.

I'm hoping that all of the comments in their forum about this issue may change this.

I will try to make the 'fully fledged' fix tonight. I guess it shouldn't be too difficult provided you know what you are doing.

That sounds great Mike - good luck, and do let us know when you succeed!

Someone in the FSX forum reported that JV at ORBX has stated that they are working on the DX10 fix. I'm not sure if it's lip service or actually true. If it is true, I've got my money ready if and when it gets fixed.

I'm pretty sure JV is listening...  :clapping:

When I found the temporary fix I decided to buy. Not disappointed yet! There were so many closet Dx10ers posting in the support forum that I'm sure a fix will happen...we're a growing band!

That was me. Didn't know about this topic. Here is the link to JV's post:

OK. I think I have found the problem. Working on the fix. Not sure I will be able to release it straight away but we will see.<br />Mike

I experimented with the FTXG lights textures, and something really fishy is going on there in DX10 mode. When I roamed across the Europe at night with lights enabled I saw that some small town is using different light texture, the blue one, and more important there were no black boxes! Remembered the look of that light texture, replaced that faulty yellow texture file with a blue light texture file (copy and overwrite), with a thought "maybe only default yellow light in the cities is faulty". Launched FSX, slewed from EDDM to the nearest houses, and saw that blue light texture again, with no black boxes. I thought right away that I fixed this issue, and slewed very fast to the Munich to check other lights... and that I saw again that yellow faulty black boxes lights are still active, bugger! Then, just to check, I slewed back to those houses near EDDM, and there weren't those good blue lights that I saw moments ago, faulty yellow lights replaced them! So, something is really fishy here. Maybe texture reload is not done properly when you slew fast, I don't know. Didn't checked this issue  again today, waiting for the fix.

Yes,  I noticed something similar near the Almaty International Airport (UAAA). I guess it's best if we wait until Orbx comes up with the fix. I have tried fixing textures in Model Converter X but did not succeed yet even though basically I understand  what the problem is.

Best regards,

Mike
