I think JV is pretty civil really. He doesn't suffer fools, agreed, but then if he ever "goes off on one" these days, I seem to always understand why. As much as the customer is always right, as was said elsewhere, he/she doesn't have the right to be rude or make inflammatory comments. I haven't read JV being rude to anyone. Robust, certainly and maybe sometimes a little too spirited, but he is clearly a passionate man and we are all reaping the fruits of that determination.

 

 

 

I actually like and respect him for not considering that he is in a popularity contest with everyone. What you see is what you get and I always prefer that to the crocodile smiles we see so often in public life.

 

Whether or not JV has been civil all the time is of course up to everybody's personal interpretation - I have seen some postings here and over at ORBX that push the boundaries sometimes for me pretty hard from a customer interaction POV, and while being legally inflammatory to the point of libel or slander is of course not somewhere you get to tread as a customer, I would argue that basic "rudeness" is something you had better be prepared to deal with in business, its just how people are sometimes - the trick is to turn it around - if you do your job right it's a win for everybody, even if the you just wind up giving people their money back.

 

In personal relationships, JV seems like a guy I would like very much as well, and would probably enjoy having a beer (or 2 or 3), with, as I also like folks with a "rough and tumble", straight-shooting, no BS approach to life...

Being PC 100% only gets you so far. Look at the guy who runs one of the discount European airlines - could he be any ruder to customers? And yet, as far as I am aware, people overlook that completely and keep enjoying cheap flights around Europe in their droves.

 

Similarly, Orbx will always be judged on the quality of its products and service. This most recent product release has been, in my long experience in this hobby, the very best example of customer communication and one of the finest I have seen anywhere.

 

With this very open and transparent approach, JV is right to consider that Orbx is giving more of itself than any other developer. That's something well worth defending, for all our sakes.

I like beer. Had some the other night over dinner with Matthijs Kok. Who would have thought? Two arrogant Dutchmen, supposed 'bad boys' of the FS community having a laugh and a bit of banter. Anyone watching us would have wanted to join in. We're both teddy bears really, all marshmallow on the inside.

 

What we also have in common is we just don't put up with BS.

I am certainly voting with my wallet for JV and ORBX - just don't like feeling like I am walking a mine field at times when dealing with them - nuff' said on the subject I am guessing.
