Better ATC which product

Featured Replies

I am "A Voice" on PFE, and my reward was a free copy of the software.

I found it so daunting that I never got it installed!

Glad to hear that it's still alive, and can be made to work... might give it a whirl after all.

"Supported" may have been the wrong term to use.  The forum can answer most questions and get you through any installation and operation issues you may have with 4.3 (which does work, and works well).  I mainly wanted the OP to understand "development" (yeah, that's the word I was looking for), was kaput.

Thank you for clarifying that. And regarding your final point perhaps "allegedly kaput" might be closer to the mark.

Believe me, no one wants RC5 more than I do ... and it may still happen ,,, but if I had to place a wager ...???

ATC... it's overrated.

Always telling you where to go, where to taxi, where to hold short...

I'd like to tell THEM where to line up and wait!

Don't be a slave to Terminal Procedures... go where YOU want to go!

Cut in front of that Triple 7; he can wait!

Make that A380 go around on Final... heck, the FMS is flying that whale, not the pilots!

Do a Chinese Fire Drill around that Citation in the Run Up area!

Make the 'Follow Me' car drive backwards while you chase him around the ramp!

What are they going to do... pull the GPU card out of your rig?

(just kidding...)

I understand neither one of them is very good with VFR. Is that correct?

If so, then I would stick with the FS9 default... I'm a VFR pilot and an addon addict - I think I'd probably be a developer if I had more skill, since I spend most of my time tinkering...

Although I do enjoy a nice flight. I've spent at least 20 hours over the last two weeks in the Piper Cub buzzing around the Appalachians...

It is truly a shame that Voxatc has given up on us poor FS9ers :( ......From a VFR perspective I think it is the only product that hits the mark for small GA and VFR flying.

Bought RC4 and so far very impressed with it straight out of the box, delighted to hear a few different accents in there, eg British, American, Swiss.

Can anyone tell me if I update using the meatwater vocpac will I still have all the different accents or just American accent?

Thanks

Niall

Yes, all the voices will still be there. They'll just talk faster.

To fix the robotic voices, look up some voice packs here on avsim by someone named "Meat Water" I believe. Basically he sped up the wav files so the speech sounds much more realistic. I'm pretty happy with Radar Contact when I'm not on Vatsim. While I don't have experience with PFE, one cool thing about it is that is has different accents depending on the region. For example, controllers in China, or Chinese airline AI will have Chinese accents, and so on. It also provides taxi instructions, whereas in RC when you ask for taxi clearance, it will just tell you "taxi to runway X" without giving you taxiways/directions. Actually I could be wrong about that last bit, but I thought I remember seeing a video of PFE in action and it giving taxi instructions. Don't hold me to that though.

Interesting ill try this thanks B)  B)

Just found the voices for those who are also interested here is the link i will be trying them out also http://library.avsim.net/search.php?SearchTerm=Radar+contact+voices&CatID=root&Go=Search

I can clarify that - you get verbal instructions from your co-pilot when taxying out (and an optional gauge with a pointer can be fitted to panels). Taxying in isn't as good and unless you pre-specify a gate for parking (which you may find occupied by AI) you tend to be sent to the nearest parking space, however small.

One has to realise that both of the products under discussion here are an overlay onto the existing system. Default ATC is still operating in the background (although the sound is off) because it is part of the AI system. Overlaying a different system on top means far less integration, hence poor interaction with other aircraft on the ground, in flight, and when landing. These products' integration is through the FSUIPC interface and hence react to, rather than anticipate, events. For example, you will hear pilots being cleared for take-off when their aircraft is detected as moving rather than beforehand. If things are busy they may already be half way down the runway!

As both are very old products now, one has to live with the absence of many of today's callsigns.

Both products require you to prepare your flight plan beforehand along with setting other options etc and I found this typically adds about ten minutes to your "play-time" which some may feel is not unrealistic but it can get a bit time-consuming if you find you have set things wrong and need to go back and do it again.

Whether you will like these products depends very much on your priorities and how you play the game. Some of the features are absolutely brilliant, but at the same time you may in time miss the tight and positive behaviour of the default system. Each has its good features and I don't think anyone can really say which add-on is the better because different users have different priorities.

Exactly. John nailed it.  B)

I noticed with RC4 running I was still getting some default FS2004 ATC playing, is this normal?

Go to your FS9 sound settings and uncheck ATC.

I would suggest you leave it checked but turn the ATC sound down to zero.

That's interesting, why do you suggest that Ray, I have it unticked in fsx, but is it better for some reason, to just turn the volume down on the voice slider?

It is OK to do it in FSX. But, in FS9 it causes CTDs when you unckeck it.
