Impact of PMDG's B777 on X-Plane-community?

Featured Replies

Not much changes in the X-Plane community as it is, but the hill X-Plane is trying to climb in order to win over new patrons may have again grown a little bit taller.

I agree, really the only ones that are affected are those who go back and forward between platforms when something new comes out, which by the way is perfectly fine, it's all about Freedom_of_Choice.

There are a few of us that got fed up with FSX and decided to ride along XP on a journey that although it has encountered a number of hurdles, there is hope and there IS light at the end of the tunnel.

So really, no impact detected by the new T7, XP development is still running its course!

How long do you think will PMDG still need before bringing out their first aircraft for X-Plane? I think they began announcing developpment about 1 year ago, right?

i9 12900k, RTX 3090, 32GB RAM

They generally come out with one every 2 to 3 years, this being their first endeavor into XP may take even longer.

Thanks

FSX continues to offer things that XP lacks and its developer apparently does not think matter, mainly for immersion.  So yes, I agree, there is a little less incentive for us FSX users to move to XP.  Looks to me that the PMDG 777 is superior to the XP 777 in any case.

I certainly don't agree with you, but of course you are free to speak your mind. I think that the developer does care and that is why it hasn't been abandoned and is still being worked on. Here are some comments from Ben himself and I quote:

"Now that we have a stable 64-bit build out, we’re writing code that looks to build the future of X-Plane, rather than just fixing its past.  So the quiet you hear now should hopefully turn into good features in the future."

So from the developer's own words, XP still alive and kicking. Granted, XP may not have all the goodies (eye-candy) that FSX devotees want but it is now 64 bit and a stable platform with lots of potential for the near future.

And, so is FSX. Very much alive, thanks to very active 3rd parties. Cross platform really is the best option.....at least for another five years or so. I think I've been saying that, for several years, now..

In the meantime, I also went back to R/C. It's been 20 years, and things have changed a bit.....except for "flight dynamics". Unlike flight sims, the physics remain the same.

And so is FSX. Very much alive

Well, I would put it in different words "It's being kept alive", FSX is in the ICU, that good old 32-bit engine on its own would have been dead in the water by now.

That is really great Larry!

I did lots of R/C flying myself about the same time as you and I can remember those good all days when a mixture of 10% nitro-methane and castor oil was used to power those good old OS, Enya, Thunder Tiger engines. Now a days its all about Lipo electrics. I'been flying gas and electric helicopters and doing some R/C off-road racing with my son these days.

Fly safe and watch those props!

A good AI/ATC system I think is really the only thing that prevents XP from grabbing more of the market share from FSX. Don't expect that from Austin though anytime soon though, as according to him XP's AI/ATC "Rocks" The scenery issues, I think will ultimate be solved by third party developers.

Thanks

Default FSX, right?

Why do people keep comparing apples and oranges, default vs add-on's...go figure!

Why do people keep comparing apples and oranges, default vs add-on's...go figure!

Because it's what's available to FSX now that XP lacks. That's the whole point. When I look to move to a new sim, I don't compare it to what I had 6 years ago, I compare it to what I have now. To warrant a move it has to equal or exceed the capabilities I currently have. This is how I've always judged a new sim. XP10 does this except for 2 crucial (For me) areas. Scenery, which in time will probably be less of an issue, as 3d parties take up the slack and AI/ATC. With Austin's attitude on this, the jury is still out whether this will ever improve.

Thanks

You right! Like 64-bit may be? HDR lighting?
