Impact of PMDG's B777 on X-Plane-community?

Featured Replies

Hmmm, that bad, and I was thinking of eventually get in it, Coming from you jcomm with your expertise, I'm gonna have to think twice before I commit. Bummer, even thought I don't fly them often, there's definitely room for one in my hanger.

Well lets see what the future holds!

"Toy" is alittle too harsh on the product, it's pretty good but the PMDG is better.  I use both.

Yes, I think calling it a toy was a bit too harsh!

"it's pretty good but the PMDG is better"

I don't have any doubts about that!

I was thinking of getting it, but jcomm's comments sort of made me think twice. I don't think its a toy either, not even close but just want to make sure I don't spend $60 and then be disappointed.

What do you like about it? Is it fps friendly? I don't have a powerful pc so fps do matter.

FROOGLE loved it in his review, I like it a lot also.  Version 1.5 of the 777 is amazing and looks much better than the pics and video on the store page.

I own the FF 777 and I found the system and FMC to be quite good and the flight dynamics feel real, like the other heavies i've flown in other Flight Simulator (Like PMDG MD-11 back in my FS2004 days). The part i'm most disappointed is the graphics, texturing and 3d modeling of the cockpit and exterior model.

Ok guys, toy was too strong - I agree ...

Actually they're both toys for us to play, that's the truth... Well, but I removed the strongest words because I agree there is a lot to it ( the WL 777 ), yet, I reallky got mad for having to wait for so long for updates just because I didn't buy it from the org, and for some aspects of the autoflight and fmc that are really not realistic.

A very simple example is a basic autoland with some significative crosswind component. I never managed to get one done in the WL 777. VNAV modes are also buggy, things like thrust derate, etc..,

I installed the 1.5.1 patch, although I am aware another one was released soon after (1.5.1.1). It's possible that some of those issues got cured, I don't know....

I confess I didn't test the "Boeing fbw" system in the WL 777. It is probably modelled too, I don't know....

That is a very good point indeed, I can certainly agree on that.

And... flight dynamics wise... Well I must agree I prefer the FF WL 777, because there are aspects inherent to X-Plane's flight dynamics model that make it inherently better.

Things like engine-out behaviour in MSFS are, as usual, very poorly reproduced, and the PMDG 777 is no exception because it still uses MSFS FDM. Fail an engine, and make sure you're in direct law ( disengage the primary flight conmputers which will automatically add rudder trim to compensate for the asymmetry, as well as the "thrust asym comp" (see attached pictues) ) and your mighty PMDG 777 will continue flying, at various speeds and AoAs, as if that powerful engine in one of it's sides ( the right one in the pics... which is alive and at full thrust ) wasn't causing any asymmetry :-(

In the WL 777 I don't know if it is possible to fail this systems, specially the "TAC", but the aircraft behaves a lot more convincingly than the MSFS one when a thrust asymmetry occurs!

Both fail miserably at simulating the effects of such basic  things as switching ON the engine anti-ice, at various flight phases.

PS1, and the upcoming PSX will, that's the truth, show how it really really is in RL :-)

PMDG 777, "al" augmented stab systems disengaged... Right engine failled, left at full thrust:

The total lack of convincing asymmetry from the right engine failure, a show killer, as usual, even in the best of the best aircraft models in MSFS :-( - The WL 777 cetianly does a MUCH BETTER job here!

Yes, exactly the same feelings as myself ;-) But for me it is still my favourite aircraft in XP10.

I am not sure the PMDG 777 is better in each points!

Textures - yes, however I am not so sure PMDG is that much better than FF as stated above. I actually think both LNAV and VNAV as well as most systems are on par and some things work even better on FF.

Not to say I do not like PMDG's 777 (it is amazingly done one), I just do not think the FF is that far behind.

And yes, I do own and enjoy both.

horani, can you be more specific and give a couple of examples?  I've given those I've found that are better modelled in the FF WL 777 than in PMDG, on my last post in this thread, but they're related to the inherent limitations of asymmetric thrust effects in MSFS. What systems / functions are you thinking about? Just curious, not to say this is better than that, but simply i find this 777 an amazing aircraft since the design of the project started in the early 90s :-)

I've flown the FF 777 for the past year where the PMDG's one is available just for couple of days.

One obvious feature is the weather radar, which obviously is a shortcoming of the sim, not the add on.

It also might be a surprise, but I found that the VNAV is working better on the FF. I am not sure if the small problems I had with PMDG's VNAV behavior are somehow related to the weather add on, I need to check that out.

Anyway, I am happy that both sims (FSX and XPX) can enjoy excellent T7.

I think that PMDG's T7 is a wonderful boost to flight simulation in general (even though I don't fly FSX any more for my own reasons).

I think that the PMDG have proven to the world that they can produce mind blowing accurate fantastic simulations ... on the FSX platform.

They show us what can be done .. and in that way they are a beacon.

Their accumulation of experience is a very positive outcome that we should all see the benefit of eventually ... and I look forward to their exploration on the newer medium that is X-Plane ... if it happens!

I simply don't have time to familiarize myself with and then enjoy the complexities of a heavy tube but I'm sure everyone across both platforms will benefit from the bar being raised by PMDG and everyone's expectations along with it.

One thing I'm not so sure about is how much commercial success is a driver for Laminar. My feeling is they've been happily plodding along for years now so I wonder if market pressure for improvements is really something that motivates them?

+1

I bought the PMDG 777 first, then I also bought the FF 777 for XP10 when it was on sale last week-end.  I like both, and will likely take months to appreciate the system depth.  The one think about the PMDG 777 and complex airport add-on like FSDreamteam is the darn stutters that occurs when you are on approach.  It may only occur for split second but you will notice it.  I already reduce traffics to 10%, kill the road traffics altogether reduce autogen to normal and the stutters still occur.  So far I don't see this in Xplane as the sim maintain a 20FPS minimum.  The only bad airport right now for me is the free KLAX that came with the FF 777 package.
