The truth about FTX Global vs GEX World

Featured Replies

Given you have ORBX sceneries, I would have to ask how often you fly in those ORBX areas or around them, it all depends upon usage for me at least.

Makes sense.  But for me I hate to admit I try avoiding to fly into my only paid ORBX scenery Brisbane, as it is EXTREMELY slow and frame hungry.

These below are the concerns users have come across with ftx does the uninstaller address these concerns to make removal clean.

- AutogenDescriptions.spb

- default.xml

(- Extrusions.spb) – not sure if FTXG

- lclookup.bgl

(- Materials.spb) – not sure if FTXG

- RoofDescriptions.spb

- terrain.cfg

Be nice to have two computers with similar hardware and software settings to see pre and post install and removal of gex and ftx to see which files are affected and if the effects are minor or need manual removal or install or remove artifact errors.

Orbx haphazard way of doing things, adding an installer and uninstaller one month after release kind of leaves some questions. Did not buy ftx because wanted to see what problems under the surface would entail as they been accused in the past by minority of users of using underhanded tactics.  Seen posts from 2008 and 2011 about Orbx using a switcher system to make it difficult to use certain add ons in the custom region.

Still, if the ftx uninstaller removes ftx and restores it to pre-fsx system settings, or at least provide a warning that reinstall of fsx software is required to restore pre-ftx settings then debate can cease at this point as the user got the information to make a informed decision.  Never install a ftx product as my flying style moved over to photoreal now and only keep gex for Mexico and Canada.  Orbx fix their software with small airfields and made their ga fields usable for photoreal scenery owners,  I would buy an airport from them, but do not want the regions just inside the airport fence.  If the user has all the facts by each side, and no point on either side argue the issue further as both sides are laid out.   Sometimes I do come across loonie, but nothing personal again you or anyone here just want the information laid out.

you seem to have trouble with the word "specific"

what I'm seeing is a rambling and vague allusion to nonspecific problems made by nonspecific users at a nonspecific time.

all of the above is restored when you run the uninstaller.

ORBX uses a switcher system because they mod FSX files, not to make it difficult to run other scenery.  I have seen orbx bend over backwards to make third party sceneries work with FTX, note the following "specific" examples:  this list is nowhere near complete

AS Lord Howe Island  (Holger created a patch to allow the best parts of AU and AS sceneries together)

Don Grovestine's FW PNW sceneries

Anthony Lynch's aussie sceneries (they didn't much like it when he created a freeware Brisbane that had better frame rates than ORBX's tho)

UK2000 (orbx posted compatibility screenshots for UK2000 airports prior to release of EU Eng)

posted compatibility screenshots before Global's release showing compatibility with UTX, OpenVFR, TrueLandscapeFrance, and airports from several different developers

created a complete compatibility solution for Aerosoft's Anchorage with SAK.

some freeware NZ sceneries I don't remember the author of.

I do remember somebody over at sim-outhouse griping about ORBX and his freeware PNW sceneries.  I didn't get too involved, but I think the issue was that he was using or referencing ORBX scenery files in his own creations, and they didn't like that.  perhaps heavy handed but not without merit.

you can buy their sceneries and install them without the region.  they just don't wanna hear it, and can't support it, if it looks like crap, or doesn't match up with default, or other stuff.  if the photo real is accurate, and you have accurate mesh, I doubt you'd have too many problems.  If you can, why not try one of their freeware or demo sceneries to see if it works?

How do I put this whole thread on ignore?

Oh ya. Stop opening it.

If thats your situation and you try not to fly there often then GEX + UTX might be what you are looking for, take into consideration the cost of BOTH programs, then weigh it in on FTX Global which right now does not smooth out coastlines, rivers, ect... like UTX does, and while UTX and FTX work together (albeit not as well as GEX+UTX) but well enough, take that cost into consideration as well. Somewhere in the middle there you will find what you are looking for. I think FTX Global is a great looking product with lots to offer especially down the road, same can be said for GEX.

Ants Aussie Airports includes a nice and smooth running Brisbane.  I tend towards using it over the Orbx version for various reasons - I've a real love/hate relationship with that package.

To bad UTX doesn't cover Oceania, otherwise your suggestion may have helped. Right know the best landclass based scenery for Australia is FTX Australia region if he want correct coastlines, mesh and vector data....

I feel with him on Brisbane though, it's the worst performing Orbx airport addon ever made, had too untick everything on the control panel to get my NGX in there without it being a slideshow :P

I stand corrected on the UTX aspect, it is sad they don't cover Oceania, with that being said, FTX Global should be the way to go for him as GEX by it self will never do what UTX or FTX Global will down the road. Not to mention FTX Global will make those Islands more green as they likely are in RL, if he has AU covered by ORBX completely then the green deserts will not be a problem, not sure how well they fixed the green deserts in v1.1 as I do not have FTXG, just watched YouTube videos, looked at pictures, and read reviews.

I made the switch from GEX to FTX a few weeks ago.  I've since ran into a "how to I add something now" question, and I've chosen a path that I hope will keep my install stable.

But I'm keeping a backup of my last FSX/GEX install until P3D 2.0 releases.  If it turns out to be a significant enhancement, I may revert FSX back to GEX-only and move FTX to P3D.

Hi guys

Thanks to coming upon this topic I just saved myself some money. I was thinking about buying both GEX and FTX global not realizing that they pretty much do the same thing.

Now I also had Flight Environment X on in my shopping cart together with Active sky next... do both of those also do the same thing and I should save my money just buying one of them?

If so my combo would look like this

I'd end up with a combination of Active Sky Next + FTX Global + REX Texture Direct HD

REX Texture Direct HD does everything that Flight Environment X does and even some more (such as runway textures).

ASN would be your weather engine and it will function just fine with either REX or FEX textures.

Maybe, but the FEX clouds and much more looks better IMO!

Good review but it lacks one important thing. I have all the products mentioned. & at first I was using GEX with UTX. Very impressive add-ons that don't seem to slow my oldish quad core down and really does enhance the original FSX ingredients. GEX & UTX are pretty simple to uninstall also. Follow the instructions and it doesn't really take that long. Replacing your backed up files is easy and both bits of software clean the registry trail and backup files really well.

Orbx FTX Global on the other hand is a completely different story. It doesn't even ship with an uninstaller. There are no real instructions on how to remove the program manually and because of the way they've coded the program, it messes with your original FSX files so even when you use the backup folder to replace your original FSX textures, some of them have been corrupted by FTX. I also found that It doesn't integrate well with other third party add-ons either. I have four of the Fly Tampa airports and FTX integrates seemlessly and does the transition into that area very smoothly. However, I also have eighteen Aerosoft airports and when I reach the transition point flying into some of those airports, FSX just crashes and burns. Even with all the FSX settings to their lowest I get the same result. I can fly out of the airports and transition into Global but vice-versa is nigh on impossible. Never had the problem ever before when GEX & UTX were installed.

Global is a beautiful piece of kit when used with Global Vector which I also purchased. They are a lot more accurate when it comes to following major highways & roads and I was able to find where I live a lot easier due to the better accuracy of the software. The town where I live was also covered in a lot more detail even though the town is of no relevance to anything historic etc...

FTX Global buyers should be aware that if they are to uninstall the software they are more likely going to have to uninstall back to the bones and re-install FSX.

My opinion after blurting all that out though is that if your never going to uninstall it, go ahead and buy it. It is a really impressive piece of kit and a lot more detailed & accurate than GEX & UTX. It also gave me 8FPS more than GEX & UTX did and as we all know that is a wow factor when it comes to running FSX on a low to mid spec PC.

That said, because of my third-party add-on issues, for the moment it has been laid to rest in a drawer and trusty GTX & UTX have been brought out of early retirement. I have emailed Orbx about the problem, (as have many more people) but as yet had no reply. Hopefully an uninstall option will appear in a future software update but till then it will remain in the drawer. It's a little like being held hostage by a software developer, cause at the moment Orbx are churning out airfields, aerodromes and major airports like it's going out of fashion! As if they know it's not good with other products. That's the feeling I get anyway. If I would have known before I bought the software it would never have graced my hard drive in the first place as I only found out after installation had taken place, so buyers beware!!!

Please do not think I dislike Global. It is an outstanding piece of kit, but for so much money you would expect it to be standard in all software these days. Once fixed, I will definately be re-installing it and along with the add-ons they are producing lately I can see it taking over all my other third party airports.

Stivy, why not have two FSX installs, one with GEX/UTX and the other with ORBX/FTX Global?
