PMDG 777X and FSUIPC ground friction modification

Featured Replies

I'm shocked that so many people know what it is like to taxi a real 777. I must live a sheltered life. :P

True, I'm not one to say if the constant rudder input on low speed taxis with a slight crosswind is realistic or not, but I do know that FSX weather and taxi dynamics leaves much to be desired.  I'm hoping PMDG will chime in soon on this, as I would love to try this if it makes taxing more realistic without any bad consequences for the fidelity of the PMDG flight model.

And... it adds yet another good feature that has plagued MSFS for years: sideways friction!

While it decreases the rolling friction coeficient in SIM1.DLL, at the same time it increases the sidewas coef. The result is a more plausible behaviour of your aircraft when taxiing, taking off or landing under crosswinds.

These coeficients are also calculated depending on the rw type.

A must have IMHO!

Am I doing this right?

-In my Modules folder I have DynamicFriction.lua

-In the fsuipc.ini file I have the following entries:

[LuaFiles]

1=DynamicFriction

2=ipcReady

3=linda

[LuaFiles]

1=DynamicFriction

[Auto]

1=Lua DynamicFriction

I think I have [LuaFiles] one too many times (though it has been working I am pretty sure)? Does everything look okay how I have it setup?

As well the Lua Plugin folder that contains numerous lua files from Pete's site has a DynamicFriction.lua and a Friction.lua. Does anyone know the difference between these? What does the friction.lua do?

Can someone point me to where to get this. As well do you just drop the script into the modules folder? And what do you put in the fsuipc.ini file? I have a registered version. Thanks Sent from Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Download Lua_Plugins_07July.zip from http://forum.simflight.com/topic/68257-latest-lua-package-for-fsuipc-and-wideclient/

This zip file contains another zip fip file Example LUA plugins.zip. There you find the DynamicFriction.lua.

Drop that into your Modules folder and make the following entry in FSUIPC4.ini:

[Auto]

1=Lua DynamicFriction

And off you go. Have fun

I have the following 2 entries only and it is working:

[LuaFiles]

1=ipcReady

2=linda

3=DynamicFriction

and

[Auto]

1=Lua DynamicFriction

The Friction.lua do the same as the DynamicFriction.lua but is not speed dependent, which means you will get short takeoff and long landings.

You can open the lua files with Bloc-notes and see what they contain.

Hope this helps.

Soeren - Blue skies sir, many thanks for the assist.

Enjoy my friend. It's going to make a world of difference.

Not to rehash answers given here, but the fine tuning of the 777 was done with the out-of-the-box FSX ground friction in play. While you might get a subjectively better taxi experience using ground friction mods, trade-offs can be expected. This includes, but is not limited to, longer landing distances and shorter takeoff distances. If you choose to use this friction mod, it won't be without consequence to your broader simulation fidelity. PMDG can't reasonably be expected to alter the 777's model to suit this mod, as it then affects the enjoyment of the (in my opinion) majority of users who would prefer not to use this mod.

Personally I choose to apply a certain technique to my ground handling to overcome any inherent limitations in the default FSX modelling, but of course the individuals preferences may lie elsewhere.

Mark this thread has moved on from the question asked in the opening post, please read the thread properly and you will see that landing and take-off distances are not going to be effected by the DynamicFrictions.lua which is what this thread is mostly discussing now. This thread is no longer talking about the hacks made directly to the Sim1.dll which you will find discussed elsewhere,  and yes those hacks will that will negatively effect the 777.

Please read the thread its only 2 pages long.

THIS IS THE LAST TIME I WILL SAY IT, LANDING AND TAKEOFF DISTANCES ARE NOT EFFECTED BY THE DYNAMICFRICTION.LUA no matter what aircraft you are using.

Cheers, Andy.

Poor Andy, I feel sorry for you :)

I have been using this since it released and can only agree. It is one of the best finds to hit the community. It massively improves ground handling of every addon. Better break away, rolling with idle ground thrust, sidewall friction enabled, turning is more realistic...

And as you have said I forget how many times, I will repeat it for those who seem to be having difficulty grasping this: The dynamic friction lua script has no effect above a ground speed you can set yourself in the text file. It defaults to 30 I believe, but you can set it to whatever you see fit. It has NO noticeable effect on take off and landing distances available, nor on braking distances, as performed on simple testing at the exact same weights and weather conditions...

All you need to do is follow the simple instructions and try it for yourself. If you have a paid copy of FSUIPC, then even the dynamic script won't cost anything... it certainly doesn't hurt to try...

Go on, take a risk!

It won't bite... if you don't like, you can easily remove it...

We did not code the aircraft to use any friction hacks

Understood, though I would substitute the word "hack" for "fix". ;-)

Andy, with respect I have read this thread very carefully, as I do all threads I reply to.

I am not advocating for a completely blind denunciation of any mods or other adjustments to the ground friction, I am simply saying that people ought to be aware that the 777 was not designed with this in mind, and any tradeoffs that may occur are a matter for the user to reject or accept as their preference dictates.

If the dynamicfriction.lua improves your experience, then good for you. Seriously. But like any adjustment to the core behaviour of the sim, it requires a bedding in process before it could be endorsed or adopted by other developers. Simple as that.

Good luck to all that decide to go ahead with this mod. B)

Mark, I would never advocate incorporating this into any 3rd party addon as such. Keeping it separate and out in the open allows us to test it and see if it hits the spot... In my case, I would say this is one of the hits of the decade in terms of ground handling...

Have you tried it? It really won't hurt... I will say that the lua script I believe only works with a registered version of FSUIPC, but my guess is that the majority have that here...

By the way, I am not answering for AndyDigital... just another Andrew... sorry if the impression was made...

Andrew Entwistle

I have always detested the flawed friction modelling in FSX so I will try this ASAP.

Now, can anyone point me to a mod that will create grading (sloping) at airports...?  '-)
