Not a Game!

Featured Replies

Of course FSX IS a game. Anyone who thinks otherwise shouldn't be allowed near a real aeroplane without adult supervision ;)

However, it DOES give a good basic understanding of flight, controls and instruments and IS effective as an IFR basic trainer.

So maybe it ISN'T a game after all.

The obsession with labelling things generally causes nothing but negativity.

Regarding FSX, it just IS what it IS.     Whether a game, a sim, a distraction, a meditation, a medication, a waste of time, the reason for living, etc, etc .... they're all just labels and none of them are effective at objectively describing what it is.

Because it's just FSX.

#Nondualism

I am currently (as i type) in a disagreement on wether SX is a "game" pr not. WHICH IT IS CLEARLEEEEY NOT! All of the programs that we have transfer in to real life flying. They think PMDG and pfpx ARE ALL GLORYFIED games. When they are actually certified programs by boeing and airbus.

BACK ME UP! THIS IS A KARMELLO SITUATION.

In my view, those who shrug it off as a game don't embed themselves in the complex addons. Their total exposure is probably limited to the default scenery and default aircraft or poor quality freeware. Seeing it from that level, I have to agree it is very game-like. The plausibility of it being anything else lies in experiencing the complexity of Majestic and/or PMDG level applications and being able to master them on at least a basic level.

However, we should not delude ourselves that if we are able to master the pc application, that we could ACTUALLY fly the type in real life.

Reality Is For People Who Can't Handle Simulation!

Flight simulation is NOT a game.  A game you play and win or loose against an opposition.  Simulation is to enjoy an artificial reproduction of something real.  Real life pilots training in a real simulator is not a game so why should doing the same thing on a  home PC be considered a game !?

Microsoft Flight had a flying / floating car you could weave around balloons for a prize, that's a game and that's why such rubbish didn't last 5 minutes in the flight simulation world !  Flight was kiddie arcade stuff.

Anyone who thinks FSX or P3D is a game should try flying something like the PDMG 747 competently, weeks of studying the manuals and hours of practice to get it right is certainly not a game and to label it such is an insult to the very talented developers that bring these wonderful realistic simulations to us.

Does it matter?

Or is this to do with the outmoded idea that games are for kids?

Bearing in mind Tie fighter vs X-Wing is known as a simulator and most of the recent blockbuster games have been 18+. The gamer generation grew up a long time ago, and games haven't been just for kids for a hell of a long time now, just as cartoons havent, A certain extremely popular yellow family show that daily. Its 2014.

A game you play and win or loose against an opposition.

Sorta like golf, right?  Your real opposition is the course, not the people you're playing with.

The opposition in flight simming is, for example, being able to grease that perfect landing, almost as good and as difficult as getting a hole in one.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

The course is not the opposition its the challenge, the people you play against are the opposition.

So are you saying that real pilots training in a real simulator is a game !!!??? I think NOT.  Next time you are at 35,000 ft going somehere, be thankful that the pilots up front dont treat their simulator training as a game !

Greasing that perfect landing in FSX is a challenge, there is no opposition.  A good complex add on aicraft is bristling with things to assist you in executing that landing and not trying to make it as difficult as possible as an opposition would do.

Do you really think Lockheed Martin bought the rights to FSX to continue developing a game !?

I think people get confused with such offering as "Lock On"  or air warefare stuff, those are games.

It's a HYBRID. Now be still.

FSX is a game and P3D is a simulator.

It says so in there respective EULA's

Ahhh there we go,  the definitive answer !

If it says so in the EULA'S  that must be correct

just like the newspapers !

As jon_aus and others have said above; call it whatever you want. The important thing is that you get whatever enjoyment or satisfaction FlightSim gives you!

Lewis, I have to call you out on this one. Have you just played Tie vs X, or have you tried the earlier, standalone X-Wing or TIE Fighter? I don't even know if one could get those older DOS selections to run on an XP or W7 system!

Anyway... I liked the Music selections in Tie and X-Wing, especially the Training Course...

Perhaps this a point of contention between the two 'camps' of FS.  There are arguably 'two' camps.  Play minded vs Work minded.

There are those who mainly fly for recreation, as someone who owns a small GA plane might.  These folks primarily fly GAs, warbirds, airshow type planes...etc. maybe a bizjet if they are playing the 'If I were a billionaire and could go anywhere mindset.'

There are also those who fly as a virtual 'occupation'.  This involves mainly flying airliners, freighters, maybe even GAs in a occupational sense, perhaps even military aircraft as well....ie all 'work' aircraft.

Could it be those who fly for recreation see FSX as recreation, thereby don't mind if it is suggested to be a game.  Heck millionaires who own a light GA plane probably refer to it as a 'toy'

Could it also be that those who fly for 'work' take it more seriously since 'work' is not a game to them, therefore it must be a simulator.

This gets muddled tho because games can be educational and simulators can be fun, and why it ultimately doesn't matter.  Are 'realistic' war games such as DCS considered a game or simulator?

It is all semantics in the end.  It is king of amusing.  Star Trek fans also get into 'heated' debates and some take it personally if you refer to them as trekkies or trekkers...like it makes a difference.  Whatever makes them happy lol.

Cheers

TJ
