Heavy Aircraft of Choice: PMDG 777 or 747?

Featured Replies

In terms of simulation its the 777 (until the 744 V2 comes out...)

But hands down the 744 is still the ruler of the sky and has survived through a lot considering the world economy was that close to crashing in 2009 and aviation as a whole was struck quite badly  :Applause:

+1. 777 is great, no doubt. But the looks of the 747 is so much better. Can't wait for V2

I wasn't aware of V2 but that sounds pretty sweet. Right now though I'm absolutely fascinated with the 777.

Recently, my virtual airline pilot career has consisted 90% of long haul flights longer than 12 hours. PMDG is stable enough to do it and I absolutely love it. Gets a little boring occasionally though.

I own a bunch of fancy planes and stuff

For me the 777 is it. No interest in 747 v2. Love the 777 and never cared for the the 747 (that and my 5k in hardware is setup for two engine ops). One thing I will like is once released a lot of Vatsim guys will go get it and we will be back to a good mix online. Right now everyone and their brother is flying 777's online. Once Quality Wings release their 787 I will pick that up. It will be nice flying at FL400 @ Mach .86 passing the 4 engine queens down below!

Yea but when you loose an engine you'll be spending the night in a polar region while us 744 guys chug along to Narita.

I think airline economics have made the 777 in general and the -200/300ER in particular the preferred long haul aircraft for Boeing operators. But my personal preference would be the Queen of the Skies, though I think they will become increasingly scarce at airlines.

Abacus 787 :Silly:

seriously, 777

never cared about 747

and would echo the call for a good 787

however, I would love to fly a good big airbus, like a 380, 340, but i am conscious this is the wrong forum for this request

True and not...

With ETOPS 330, you can cover just about the whole globe.  ETOPS 330 means the plane has been certified to be highly reliable on one engine only, and could actually sustain 5.5 hours of flight on the other engine.  That being said, depending on how far you're into the flight, it might just be prudent to keep on trucking.  That all depends on the operational variables at the time, though.  Is there enough fuel to fly at a sub-OPT altitude, what are the facilities like at the diversionary airport, and so on...

The more engines argument was also what MD always said when people claimed 3 engines were unnecessary... and... well... how many MD-11s do you see now?
