Fsx to.... Quit smoking!

Featured Replies

Just wanted to share this little story with you. I am 27 years old, started to smoke when I was 19. At the age of 25 I quit for 10 months but then came back to it and smoked even more. 2 days ago I had 1 pack a day.

Than I started to think - what does it give me? Why is it better than landing an NGX in fog on my hometown airport coming from Greek Islands where I spent my last holiday? Why is it better than Cessna pre flight inspection and checking for foul spark plugs? Why is it better than watching gsx loading baggage to my AXE on this fancy cargo platform?

So I quit again. I know it is not long but I do not smoke for 2 days. Not because I want to break up with this habit but because I just came back to being non smoker. And because I did, than there is nothing more to break up with.

So I promised to myself - whenever I will save 80 bucks per month I will spend at least 30/month on an addon airport. Rest goes into bank account and waits for better times (I think I need another throttle quadrant and rudder pedals...)

When I think about it now - whenever I feel urgent need to smoke I get into my sim and just forget about it.

So I guess it's not a way to quit but it helps a lot. :)

Hats off to you. That takes a lot of willpower to do what you are embarking on. The best of luck that you break the habit of the 'evil weed'. And as you yourself so shrewdly observe, you have a better lifestyle, you enjoy replicating your holiday memories through FSX, you save yourself 80 bucks per month in the bargain, and more importantly, you will have a healthier prolonged life. Well Done. Stick at it.

I need to pick a date, good idea though using FSX as a platform to help you overcome this habit. Perhaps I should do the same.

I have similar problem, but with alcohol! I brought it under control with rule of only drinking half a litre on every Saturday evening. And it helped! Alcohol does bring joy into life, and a better conversation for some people. But smoking, doesn't do anything.

I used to smoke a few months back, had 7 cigarettes in less than 20 minutes on one special night out. And then, I realised, smoking does not do good. And I quit completely, just like that, cold turkey! Subconsious mind try to pressure you into to do it, but all you have to do, is to tell your mind a strict firm no!

Whenever you think of buying cigarettes and/or alcohol, just put the money away, put it in a jar. And in a few months, you will realise, wow,  that's a lot of money )

Well, I eat too much, drink too much, smoke to much and spend way too much time flight simming but at least I will die happy.

I've known several non-smoking, non-drinking apparently healthy specimens who have died in their 40's from heart attacks - maybe it's the monotony of such a healthy lifestyle.

True, life has to be enjoyed. But also, it has to be under control

You can become drunk till you can't stand, you can smoke a lot till you choke. But it should not be done too often.

Lot's of luck, it's a tough habit to quit, but well worth doing it.. been 28 years for me last February... lol.. after the first year it gets easy!

Darn, I wish I could quit now and buy more add ons great incentive!

I quit on 1/17/08 after smoking for 32 years. I did it with Chantix. Don't follow directions, I took it for six months before I quit. I still get cravings. Good luck to you and if you find it too difficult look into Chantix.

Thanks, Ron Fields

Well I read so many bad opinions about chantix (including blaming for over 150 suicides) that I decided to stick to my common sense, strong will and bigger budget :)

Anyway - tommorow is the first day when I go to work from the moment I became non smoking person. In our environment over 50% of crew are smoking but hey... I can handle it easily. Why should I smoke if I'm an non smoker!

Thanks all for good wishes, this just helps me during tougher moments. :)

Congrats on quitting.  I had tried 2 times, and the final attempt stuck.  I will be smoke free for 3 years this August.  I look back and think of all the money I have wasted on the habit and feel so ashamed, not to mention the effect on my health.  I know it sounds cliche, but if I could do it, anyone can.  Smoked for 21 years, and thanks to the patch I kicked the habit for good!

Made me feel like having a smoke. ;)

Of what? Just fired up a Boro. :)

Congrats mate and keep at it. I rarely frequent the pubs these days and when I first did that I started buying more FSX addons with money saved as well. Now I stopped buying FSX addons and have been spending that money on airline tickets instead (I feel I have enough things FSX now).

I am now of the view better to spend the money on real flights and see the world rather then seeing a simulated one on the computer. I am heading off to Vancouver, Chicago, Toronto, Los Angela's and Auckland this May/June so that is where my Flight Sim money has gone, also going to Australia later this year.

I have been putting away $75 to $100 every week to make these trips happen and it does work.
