March 27, 201412 yr Commercial Member Only time I had a mid air collision was on Vatsim. New York to Frankfurt with the PMDG 747 some guy flying from KLAX had gone to sleep & activated pause at top of descent, his aircraft was sitting paused at 37000ft slap bang in the middle of a busy airway over Belgium! Ever since that incident I make sure I am flying a lateral offset & Aircraft/ground collisions are switched off. Not a fun way to end a long haul trip! Rob Prest
March 27, 201412 yr some guy flying from KLAX had gone to sleep & activated pause at top of descent That's hilarious Rob. Not often you see a "large object" sitting stationary in the sky that high up  Chris Sunseri
March 27, 201412 yr ... and with Rob flying in any airspace as if he were flying over the African continent ... What happened to AVSIM
March 27, 201412 yr it didn't take long for the wreckage to crash down into the water below. The 777 carried on as if nothing had happened Ha! Do you think that was an assignment of who was at fault? his aircraft was sitting paused at 37000ft slap bang in the middle of a busy airway That's as good as the time I was flying my Carenado C90 on a path right over my house in FSX on the way in to KESN, and looked up and out of the window in my house and saw myself flying past. March 27, 201412 yr Oh, it was definitely my fault. March 27, 201412 yr Author Imagine if we didn't had that collision with other aircraft or objects option in fsx. Imagine if it was on all the time with out anyway of disabling it. I can see all now many simmer getting angry because they have to restart the entire flight again. March 28, 201412 yr I have actually been in a midair collision during climb around a minute after takeoff. In fact, the visibility was really low and I somehow hit an AI plane IL-76 approaching/departing another airport (Moscow Area). My TCAS started to ring but obviously I ignored it, as I thought the chance of hitting an AI is basically close to 0% percent, but I was proven wrong as it happened. And unfortunately, crash detection was on. Also it has happened during approach in low visibility, but that was mainly my fault trying to overrun an ATR 72 approaching as I had to go to the toilet. Yes, it was stupid of me to wait. It seems I cannot ignore the TCAS anymore as I used to do.
March 28, 201412 yr A year ago, I had this (see screenshot) happen. I was following an ILS into KSEA 34R at night with really bad viz. Airliner was given consent to land, but was 2-3 nm behind me on final. I thought it was strange he was so close, but I was very low on fuel and decided I needed to proceed and that ATC would give him a go-around if need be. Well, ATC didn't maintain proper separation. At first I wondered what the loud racket was, and though maybe it was the sound of my own turbines bouncing off the ground since we were getting below 1000ft AGL. But then I realized FSX has no such sound-reverb feature, and the sound was getting REALLY loud. How could the reflected sound of an engine be louder than the actual engine? Nope, something was definitely wrong. Looked out the left window and saw a 737 slowly passing my left wing. It was quite a shock, and I snapped a couple screenshots before aborted the approach and banked right. You can see how ridiculously close it was. Ethan Edelson

That was really intense , am going to be honest but flying at night gives me the creeps sometime. You can't see much outside an if an aircraft approaches you by surprise that would be something for me to jump out of my chair lol. Think about it you focus to land but you can't see much outside an out of no where this big aircraft appears right in front of you. March 28, 201412 yr Indeed, unfortunately with FS9 the AI is not really that load and those planes, (IL-76) and (ATR72) that I hit in almost no viibility there was no clue of, apart from in the TCAS. But I wouldn't worry about crashing with the AI too much, it's like 1% of happening. Usually you might crash because of a navigation error in a badly equipped airport, or while approaching an airport in a montaineous area, all in low visiblity. I remember when I had to land in Innsbruck with less than 50 metres visibility but I made it, thanks to my ILS. Had to follow my charts really closely not to hit something during approach. Couldn't divert due to fuel warnings.
March 28, 201412 yr I have yet to have a mid-air collision in FSX, but I have had a few run-in's with aircraft and ground vehicles while taxiing. I have had several in-flight close calls where an AI aircraft was far less than 1 mile from me. ATC usually, but not always, warns me if I am on an IFR plan or have requested flight following. March 28, 201412 yr It's been a long time since I've had a close encounter or air-to-air. RC4 and Ai Smooth do a pretty good job of keeping AI away from me. 7950X3D + 7900 XT + 64 GB + Linux | 4800H + RTX2060 + 32 GB + Linux My add-ons from my FS9/FSX days

Sometimes FSX is very docile and calm, like a relaxing scenery tour. But other times you can find yourself in impenetrable darkness, heart racing, palm sweating, having to struggle just to know where you are relative to the earth. I love the VFR daytime stuff, but nothing gets your heart racing like IFR night flight through IMC. The windows might as well be painted black sometimes. It's very creepy indeed. In that specific incident, when I saw the airliner at my 9 o clock, my heart was in my throat. Ethan Edelson
