Traffic addon preference (& their impact on performance)

Sorry if I'm being a little dense here, but could you elaborate more?  Is there a simple update or something that lets was behind the performance boost?  (At the moment, I have NO AI traffic program so I'm eager to hear what works best and why.)  Thanks!

Not with UT2 no. You have to manually update the planes/liveries that you want. It's a pretty simple process once you get the hang of it. Plus the amazing add-on planes that people have created are incredible and far superior I think to any default traffic program airplane that is out there. You just have to take the time to update the planes.

As for my traffic maybe if I had gone with 5.4b my sim would have been fine. I didn't know you could use previous versions.

Ok, dumb question possibly about the any of the programs: Don't they take over all the AI traffic functions in FSX?  I mean, if the program is generating planes to fly from airport A to airport B (whether they're based on fictional or real schedules), aren't those aircraft going to actually be taking off & landing in those airports?  (Hope that makes sense.)  From a couple of these posts, it sounds like AI traffic in the airports controlled separately from the is traffic in the addon.

Last thing: Looks like MyTraffic has a Lite version as well ... which is much cheaper, obviously.  Anyone using the Lite version and not happy with it?  I gotta say, as someone who's used to the default FSX traffic, still sounds a big improvement.  Thanks!

Yes the traffic programs create traffic based on assigned schedules. If you follow these planes from takeoff to landing they will fly a programmed route to whatever airport they are going to. It also can be a bit crazy like in UT2 where if you go to an airport at a busy time of day you might see 10-15 planes lined up to take off after a few minutes which is cool but can also create quite a long wait to take off which is why there is a clear approach feature that will delete the planes in front of you so you can take off.

Also the default FSX ATC is who is controlling these planes like on the ground and clearing them for taxi/takeoff.

Just a thought: Of course MTX Lite is less expensive ( in terms of "absolute amount of money"), but if you take a look at the comparison table, I'd say it's actually more expensive (as in "cost per plane+paint+other features").

But apart from that I see no reason why one shouldn't be happy with it, except if you want detailed AI models.  In that case neither of the MTX products are that good.

Thanks Sportsfan23, I think I get it.  Just occurred to me though: in UT2, you are able to control how much traffic you want it to generate, right?  I'm assuming there's a slider or something that allows to reduce the amount of planes in the air if, for example (as I fear might be the case with my so-so machine) you're frames are way down bc of the amount of traffic.  I don't necessarily need 100% accurate schedules. I just want the skies to be somewhat filled and not fly at like 3 FPS. ;)

And I hear you, FloG.  It is certainly better value.  But since I just dropped almost $200 (USD) on Orbx FTX scenery addons + a couple of airports, I'm a little depleted.

Thanks for the advice, gang!

Yes you can set the amount of airline and general aviation traffic you want. With UT2 leaving the airline sliders at 100% will give you every flight that is available. It's actually pretty cool landing at some tiny airport somewhere and finding a few regional planes there. I though leave general aviation traffic at zero because I found it can really mess up FPS.

I have not lowered airline traffic from 100% so I would guess if you want better FPS just lower the slider down.

My Traffic X + My Traffic Live give realistic world Traffic of alle major Airlines from the US, Western Europe, Japan and Australia of the day.

Alle schedules and delays are there.

Cool.  Thanks guys!  Wish there were a demo for MTX.  Oh well.  I'll let you know which one I go with.  I'm about 60% leaning towards UT2, but we'll see!

Anyone know which addon has the most military traffic?

Windows 10 (x64) - X-Plane 11 - M/B: Asus ROG Maximus IX Hero - CPU: i7 7700k (@5.0GHz) - RAM: 32Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 @ 3200MHz - Video: GTX1080ti - Cooling: Custom water loop (EK 140 Revo D5 pump/res combo, EK EVO CPU block, EK XE360 Rad)

Probably MyTraffic X Pro

Ut2 also has a feature where you can set the fps to say 20 and ut2 will only use traffic to keep the fps at that level.

World of Ai which has nice models and schedules can be updated and it is free. There is a bit of a learning curve but that's half the fun. http://www.world-of-ai.com/

Yeah I've looked at this a bit, but I'm a little too eager to just get something going that's pretty straightforward to use.  I'm still learning how to fly and am working on my piloting skills, so something that's not a framerate-killer and is out-of-the-box is a little preferable at the moment.

Ooooo, that IS a nice little feature.  This is definitely a concern of mine since my system is sub-optimal.  Does anyone know if MyTraffic X has something similar?  The one thing in common I seems to hear from  folks who have seen both in action is that MTX has slightly less good-looking models but because of that it's easier on performance.  I'm honestly not too too concerned about the other planes looking incredible.  I mean, I hardly see them close up except for when I'm taxiing and (hopefully) concentrating on other things. ;)

Interesting.  Is it possible that Ultimate Traffic 2 actually has LESS of an impact than the default traffic?  ...because I gotta say, with my mid-level PC I see a lot of difference between having the the default setting turned way down vs way up.  Is it just me?

Hmmm.  So this makes me wonder if it is, in fact, platform-related.   Fyi, I use FSX.

To be honest, since I'm new to flight simming, I haven't tweaked my config files much.  I'm still learning how to be a half way decent pilot so the nuances of performance tweaking is new territory to me.  I purchased "FSX Booster 2013" which helped things a little, but it only does a pretty generic fixes from what I can tell.  Do you do any specific tweaking to accommodate for traffic (as opposed to, say, scenery) density?

Good to know.  Ok, MyTraffic is (back) on my list again.  I'm still not sure which of these two would be a good fit.  Fyi, I do mostly GA aircraft flying, and almost entirely in North America.  I'd say I mix it up in terms of the kinds of airports I fly into/out of because my smaller prop planes don't need the enormously long runways to land on that can only be found in major hubs airports.  Given that preference, what do you recommend?

Thanks, everyone, for you input!  This is really helpful. :)  Keep it comin'.  Cheers!

I think My Traffic might be best for you. It will more easily fill up your skies and it has a better variety in GA aircraft than UT2 and it will perform better too. If realistic schedules and nice airliners is not your priority then My Traffic is the way to go. Also UT2 has very little Cargo traffic and zero military traffic.

I actually found I got worse FPS with My traffic. Now of course somebody else might say they got better FPS with my traffic than UT2. Like I mentioned before in order to see how awesome UT2 is you're going to have to update the planes and paint schemes yourself. If you don't want to mess with that then go with my traffic as I think they have updated paints but I am not positive on that.
