MegaSceneryEarth England and Wales

So, following Andy's observations about the file size, what is the general consensus about this? Is it better than the Orbx  version, or less than the Orbx version, or is it a Recommended Buy? I've never owned any MegaEarth sceneries so I'm a newbie as far as they are concerned as I've always opted Orbx. Mind you, I have none of their UK?ireland scenery, just airports.

ORBX isn't really comparable to this as it's not a photoscenery but a landclass based product, both have their pros and cons. (Landclass based scenery tends to look rather repetitive especially from high altitudes while photoscenery offers more like like looks from higher altitudes but lacks autogen, which makes it look flat from below 5000 feet or so.)

Is it better than the Orbx

You can't really compare this product, which is photoscenery, to Orbx Landclass.. they both have their pro and cons, but are are very different beasts. I used to be a huge PS fan, and also tested for Horizon a few years ago, but now I generally prefer the Orbx approach and only use a few small areas of photoscenery....  edit: sorry repeating what’s already said above, as I type sooo slow

It would be interesting to see some user screens of the MSE version of Eng & Wales, but judging from their promo shots I would say it looks quite close to Horizon in terms of resolution and clarity, though only one shot is close enough to the ground to get a true idea. The colouration looks okay too, so I would not totally write it off especially for the price.. Horizon is a dogs dinner in some areas, and stunning in others, however the work Darren did on the water masks of the later version was very well done, and is something I'm sure MSE will lack.

I own several of the older boxed Megascenery photos products and they are very good, but I was never so impressed by the MSE areas I tried, as they often lacked colour and contrast; the screens I've seen of ENG & Wales do look better than those I tried.

Thanks for the inputs, FScamp and Novation. Certainly learned something here about the different types of sceneries. I've also read elsewhere about the merits of Horizon's output, so it will certainly be interesting to see some screenshots of the MSE and read Horizon users inputs into this thread.

Like Kevin, I am waiting for the ES AutoGenesis project products to be released. The photographic terrain textures will be considerably higher resolution than the PlayHorizon scenery, and I am hoping that the quality will be much more consistent. In addition, this product will include accurately positioned autogen trees, buildings and other objects, so it should be quite spectacular. Yes, it will cost a lot of money (and hard disk space) to cover all of the UK with this level of quality, but that is irrelevant to me. If it makes my virtual rendition of the UK look much more realistic, then I will buy it.

After purchasing and installing yesterday I took the hop acrass the pond from KIAD-EGLL. I would have liked to report earlier but I was too tired to stay up and complete the flight. This morning I watched the F1 race with mys son and resumed the the flight at the TOD. Over all my impressions are favorable considering the products price. The resolution stayed quite sharp up until about a 1000 feet. Since I am a tubeliner most of my concentration is required at this point so resolution lower than this does not bother me. I will say that the colors did seem a little washed out for my liking. I would have like to see deeper greens and browns. Overall, for the value I am quite pleased and it is nice to take off and land from two photoscenery countries. Just my perspective from the average consumer!

Am asking  for people to post about how they find MSE2 England. Just what are you contributing apart from spam?

I was making the point I find some of there work great and some not.

Let's here from people who have it not people who think they know how it is^^

I wish I had read the earlier comment about Horizon's VFR version 3, before buying MSE England. I do have other MSE products and I'm very happy with them. I don't want to sound like a salesman for Horizon products (or Playsims as they are called now). But, the quality of the MSE product isn't as good as Horizons. Also, horizons does come with 60cm areas, 3D objects and the terrain mesh is more detailed,  which does add to the 70GB verse 30GB of the MSE product. One thing that does annoy me about both products is that the photo scenery is nearly 15 years old. In both products, my house, where I've lived for nearly 14 years, is building site!!!

and the terrain mesh is more detailed

This may have been forgotten when comparing sizes... the Horizon mesh for Eng and Wales is a very detailed 5m which must add greatly to the size of the product... along with the other additions.

I agree about the age of the data used, it would be nice to see something more up to date... I was disappointed to hear Earth Simulations are working with the same data for their new product as that used in the original Horizon scenery. However, if newer quality data is not there, then there is not much to be done... I believe the Just Flight Real Scenery used more recent material, but judging by the end product, the quality seemed to be quite poor, with a heavy green cast, and a lack of definition.

Are you sure that Earth Simulations are using the same data as the Horizon scenery? Their AutoGenesis project is based on 15cm resolution data that is resampled to 30cm. I am not certain that the data used by Horizon was that level of quality....

Chris it may possibly be the same data, taken initially at 15cm or greater resolution, but down sampled for sale at a cheaper price point, that Horizon used? Don't know, just speculating :P K
