Interesting, so is that something LM is working on?

Yes, and it will also require some support from nVidia ... which has not materialize to end consumer yet.

It sounds like this thread has just got too big and many are skipping to the end and asking the same questions that have already been answered earlier.

Cheers, Rob.

Rob, do you still find that SGSS isn't necessary with 2.3 to eliminate shimmering?

Rob, do you still find that SGSS isn't necessary with 2.3 to eliminate shimmering?

No, but you need to qualify that ... at 2560 x 1600 the shimmering is much less than I've seen on lower resolutions.  But with that said, shimmers seem much prounounced around water also.

SGSS AA will always provide the best image quality SGSS 8X with 16X AF you'll not see an edge or shimmer in anywhere, BUT also extremely hard on FPS, especially when it comes to clouds and/or any particle systems (smoke, etc.).  IMHO, to make SGSS AA viable (in any weather condition) will required SLI support.

The best current compromise is to use FXAA with 4X MSAA and 4X or 8X AF ... FXAA will also remove much of the "sparkle" effect you get from some scenery (Orbx Taheo for example).  I say "current" because AA is an area the nVidia have considerable control over with profiles ... and they still have not provided one for Prepar3D.

The best news here is that nVidia is pushing the PC platform so they are committed and they understand consoles and mobile computing will never be able to provide the power requirements needed for Graphics processing ... console would burst into flames if one put 1200 Watts into it just to drive graphics ... and needs less to day 1200 watts for mobile devices isn't viable.  Side tracked ... oops.

If you get a chance to visit one of my other threads, I did the calculations necessary to maintain perfectly fluid motion at 500 Kts and 500' AGL ... your not going to like the results, you'll need to be able to maintain 230-240 fps (and of course a monitor running at 240 Hz) ... so you'll have to compromise.  This is why I don't focus on FPS and look at "time between frames" and input lag as my driving goals because I know that absolutely fluidity is not going to happen any time soon, so I've made peace with that   :Peace:

Specific list of items addressed are in the P3D Learning Center doc under "what's new" ... there are about 150-200 items so not going to list them all, sorry.

I know it's me, but has anyone else been able to find this document in the "What's new" sections. I'm not event sure I'm looking at the right "Learning Center."  Let me say sorry in advance for bothering everyone if it's right under my nose.

Rob you state that Fps are not important to you, smoothness being more important  ,which i agree with, but on your excellent videos you seem to have the Fps showing in the top LH corner, could you please tell me what is providing the Fps figure, also thanks for all the work you are putting in for our benefit hope LM appreciate it,Also guy,s there is a lot of talk about Nvidia not supporting P3d,well checking the link to Nvidia forum provided we this massive flightsim community have filled approx two pages on thier forum, lets really get behind this sim please and ask them to provide a Pd3 profile via that thread,

many thanks for reading

Hi Rob,

Just posting my message again below in case you missed it previously. Would you mind telling me if the following issues have been addressed?

1. Camera clipping through the ground from the virtual cockpit view (load up the R22 and move the camera/viewpoint around whilst landed, you can 'see through' the ground at the corners of the screen where it's closest to the eye-point camera).

2. The shadow cast onto the terrain from the VC uses the VC model rather than that of the exterior (so as you can imagine often most of the aircraft is missing!). Incidentally the shadow also seems to mip-map way too early making it overly blurry from most ranges other than very close.

3. Helicopter rotor wash effects do not seem to be working/visible (kicking up dirt from the ground etc.).

Thanks in advance.

Robert

I agree !

I've activated SGSS to 8 in my NI profile and with my SLI (not with the friendly tweak...) I don't have the drop of fps I get with FXAA activated.

No idea where it might be in Win 8.x UI ... but the document is located in the root of where you installed P3D and it's filename is "Prepar3DLearningCenter.chm".

Rob, thanks again for all your testing, troubleshooting, and the info you provide to both LM and us users.  Do you have a sense for how close we are to the 2.3 release at this point?  I understand if you can't give any exact figures, a guess will do.

Thanks

I provide the FPS value for other's benefit ... I'm not that interested in it, but others are very interested so I provide the value for their benefit.  nVidia's Shadow Play and/or FRAPS can provide the FPS value on the overlay.  On a side note: 2.3 RC2 will no longer allow RivaTuner/MSIAfterburner to display GPU, CPU, frame, bus load, temps, etc. values as an overlay ... they appear on initial loading screen on P3D, but no longer appear on the main view (or any view) in P3D.

LM and nVidia are working together, just lots of technical challenges and I'm not sure how they'll get SLi to work with 3rd party that "Do their own thing" in terms of rendering graphics ... just have to wait and see.

Cheers, Rob.

Just posting my message again below in case you missed it previously. Would you mind telling me if the following issues have been addressed?

I haven't tested this recently -- if I have time this week I'll test, but need to do some real work (that pays the bills) this week so will not be able to test much.

Interesting, so you are not using the AFR-FriendlyD3D.exe to do SLI?  Are you sure you are getting SLI?  I have 3 Titan Blacks sitting on my desk right now that I'm going to attempt to get working with P3D v2.3 RC2 this weekend ... but without nVidia driver support I think it's going to be hit and miss.  And I'm also not sure if my PSU or motherboard will handle the task of three Titans so I may end up just doing two until I can get a better PSU (currently rated at 1200 Watt but it's not so much watts but how well it controls the power output).  Beau had indicated he got about a 30% performance increase (this was back in April) ... BTW this SLi knowledge is public to everyone: http://www.prepar3d.com/forum-5/?mingleforumaction=viewtopic&t=6352.0

Cheers, Rob.

My 2 gtx780 TI are used at 99 % in SLI  use with p3d.

Just one,  I'm arrount 20-25 fps with very much clouds (ASnext with the weather to cry we have in France now...) and at 30-35 with the both

I have to say, I am a bit disgusted with LM right now.

They stated they would have SLI support shortly after release.

2.1 came, no support.

They said it is possible in 2.2...

2.2 came, no support.

They said it was possible in 2.3

2.3 is coming, already stated, no support.

I realize much of this depends on nvidia playing nice with LM, but it would have been nice knowing this from the beginning.  I feel like LM has't been completely forthcoming.

No probs Rob, totally understand - Thanks for the reply.

Cheers,

Robert
