Best weather engine for FSX

Featured Replies

And DHM. Its incredible how just a tiny weeny little jiggle of the screen can add so much to immersion. I tried ASN and really liked it but felt I was flying on rails, to sterile

EZdok.... problem solved.

Personally I'm starting to dislike Opus the more I use it. Weather injection is slow, the turbulence is a joke and often not even there, the cloud cover looks unrealistic compared to products like ASN and FSGRW (don't know about REX), DHM is limited and its DHM interface is poor and the developer seems to have some personal issues as a quick Google will show.

I'm looking foward to try out REX's new weather engine that is still in development, it sounds very promising.

Your post is very confusing. First you say EZdok...problem solved. Then you go on to say further down  that DHM is limited and the Developer has issues.

Are you talking about Ezydok or Opus ?? The Ezydok dev has personal issues which make version 2 vaporware., but as for Opus, it is the best Cam and DHM on the market.

You also state that turbulence is quite often not there...not every flight will have turbulence. Have you read the manual ?

Sure if you want to pay $35 . OPUS cam is free, you really need to keep things in perceptive.

However when you actually enter turbulent area, like a thunderstorm cloud ASN suddenly gives a lot better "immersion" IMO. It actually shakes your aircraft properly unlike OPUS and models microbursts and other dangerous weather phenomenons.

Hi,

Since the default weather is seldom, if ever, updated I'm looking into alternatives.  Most of my flying is with GA at low levels.  What I see as the biggest problem with the default weather is the way low level clouds, where they intersect the terrain, look like jello in a bowl.  The jiggling effect is very annoying.  Do any of the suggested alternatives suffer from this as well?  Also, do any of the weather addons suggested require anything more complicated than the default selection of  real world weather with a single click?

Plus ASN has that volumetric fog effect that actually covers your airplane. It's pretty cool to switch to a cabin wing view and see the wings actually penis rate in and out of the fog or clouds. Or switch to spot view and the airplane will actually disappear into the fog or clouds or fade in and out.

Not sure about ASN feeling like it's on rails as someone mentioned. I feel a lot of movement depending on the wind and weather conditions. I been bounced around quite a bit in turbulence.

You may wanna take a look at your spellchecking / autocorrect set-up ;-)

Oops, your right I didn't see that when I posted. It was supposed to be penetrate in and out of the clouds. The auto correct got me that time as I didn't notice.

If you had the "flying on rails" feeling with ASN, something wasn't configured properly.  My sim has never felt so alive as it has since moving to ASN shortly after its initial release.  Opus' DHM must be one of those "love it or hate it" things, because I know many love it as you do, but I could never quite warm up to it for a variety of reasons.

Can't repeat this enough, however.  Both are excellent products.  Both have demo versions.  Wx is important to me, and if it's important to you as well, I highly recommend spending the time required to give each of these products a good tryout to see how each matches your individual preferences and requirements.  For me, the winner was hands down ASN (with REX 4 textures), but what's critical to me may be less so to you and vice versa.  Give 'em both a try and see what you think.

Scott

I like all the weather engines, but ASN is my preferred, echoing Scott's post and adding that Opus cams are the most realistic imho. It is very easy to set up, it does not run another memory hogging DLL in FSX which is one of it's best features. All run outside of FSX,
