My bro and I are planning a trip to Italy, specifically Rome,  (also maybe Naples) and I was wondering how easy is it to get in and out of there with flights? We had a great deal of trouble trying to get into Dublin, both in flying back in the spring, and by boat in Oct, so I was wondering whats the likelihood of actually getting there without a dreaded delay of some sort, if there is one, will flights there be easy to find to replace on the same day? I had an idea I'm going to discuss with my bro, about maybe flying someplace different like Paris, and taking the train to Rome, but travel times are essential, as we will probably not have much more than 2 weeks in Europe, so I'll also ask, whats the best way of getting into and out of Rome near when you intend to?

Guess what - tens of thousands of people get there every day without problems. Some with no delays, some with delays, like everywhere else. You can probably find some statistics that compare European airports.

I've never been to Naples, but to Rome twice, both times by plane, and I have never had serious troubles with the airport itself. The one time I was stuck there for about three hours (from midnight till around 3am) was because we had trouble getting our rental cars.

But Italy is quite famous for union strikes, so this could become an issue. However, I think railroads are more prone to be affected by them, so I'd suggest going there by plane. Besides, it's an extremely long ride from Paris to Rome. It already takes more than 15hrs from Vienna already!

It was a fair question, but honestly because you would be beginning and ending your trip in Rome you shouldn't have much problem airport-wise. On the way in it's just a matter of grabbing your bags and going, on the way out you just check in and go through security. As for delays, you will find these at all major airports and Rome should be no different. AFAIK Fiumicino isn't known for delays like we see at JFK for example. I've never been there, but I've been through similar sized airports in Europe and have had family member fly into/out of Rome without any hassle. One thing, though, is that I heard that Alitalia is really bad with losing bags. They may have improved, but that is what I heard. 

 

It would be helpful to know if you are flying in from within Europe or from the US, Africa, Asia, etc. Also, a more detailed list of your concerns would also help. 

Surprisingly enough Italian airports are quite efficient!!! One can experience delays and cancellations at any airport so that question is immaterial really. If you go to Capodichino (Napoli) that is run by BAA so expect no worse than Heathow! If you go to Napoli itself don't go sightseeing unaccompanied.

If you had bothered to use Google you'd have found Rome has two airports. Any way, why ask on a flight simulation site here - a travel agent would be more useful.

I have been in and out of Fiumicino many times, albeit not recently. My last trip to Rome was close to twenty years ago though, so I'm confident things have changed a lot since then... :Whistle:

My brother and I on our last trip to Europe did it from JFK in October, we will probably go sometime in the spring (slightly out of tourist season, but just close enough that most things will be open) I do not know the airline yet, as we haven't done any major planning. I asked here, because I figured people here would know, and I don't know a travel agent to ask. My concern is because last spring we tried to go to Europe from Dulles Int to Dublin Int,  and got stuck there for almost 24 hours, and had to can our trip entirely, my concern is the smaller airports seem to have less international flights to and from, I just wish to avoid being stuck with no way out until 3 days later. No way I'm waiting that long to take my trip.

One of the many things the Italians do really well it is getting things to run on time.

 

Their train service is superb so I would imagine the airports are run just as well.

 

 

Last January I flew Barcelona - Rome (on Vueling) and Rome - Berlin Tegel (on GermanWings) with no problem or delays. My backpack arrived with me on both flights Like most airports in Europe, there are fast, frequent and inexpensive train and bus services between Fiumicino and central Rome.

 

I love flying in Europe because the fares are so much more reasonable than here in the U.S. If you can stand the cattle-car atmosphere, RyanAir is your best bet for cheap flights. They have specials running all the time, so check with them first. Right now, for example, they're offering a $49 one-way non-stop London Stansted to Rome.

From what I could see on Flightaware, Alitalia has several daily direct flights. Two from JFK, and one each from Boston and Miami. Delta has a direct flight from Atlanta, and USAir has one from Philadelphia. There may be more.

Thanks, I have no idea what distances are like in Europe, my only experience there has been a couple of trips to the UK and Ireland.

To work out of Rome is a nightmare - always a delay of some kind of failure in equipment. Otherwise, great destination.
