March 27, 201511 yr I think I've finally got to a good working set for all but the PMDG and CS aircraft. Here is a quick test around FlyTampa's Dubai: These are the updated settings I'm going to settle on (maxed out Shadow Cast Distance) ... ended running my monitor at 30Hz rather than 60Hz ... just seems to work better with P3D: http://www.robainscough.com/P3D_Titan_X_4K_Set.html Here is the download link (2GB file) if you're get stutters from YouTube - download and view locally ... I've had excellent success (read very smooth) using CyberLink PowerDVD 14 as an MP4 4K player. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bw0Q-fAfEZwyVW8xdEVjZnUxRXc/view?usp=sharing For heavy overcast weather I've found just changing from 8X MSAA to 2X MSAA allows me to retain 30 FPS. Cheers, Rob.
March 27, 201511 yr Some highly contentious flying, but the point of the video is clear. Your intent to demonstrate such incredibly smooth performance has once again caused us all to salivate profusely. Thanks for that... March 27, 201511 yr Very smooth and nice looking vid Rob.. I saw that you are using Medium clouds. Clouds still drag the framerate down. However , as I am flying over Europe only I always have them maxed out with MSAA 4x. 5950x3d 5.4-5.7 GHz - Asus ROG 870 Crosshair Apex - GSkill Neo 2x 24 Gb 6000 mhz / cas 26 - MSI RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC - 1x SSD M2 6000 2TB - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 1Tb - Corsair 5400 case - Corsair 360 liquid cooling set - 3x 75’ TCL tv. 13600 6 cores @ 5.1 GHz / 8 cores @ 4.0 GHz (hypterthreading on) - Asus ROG Strix Gaming D - GSkill Trident 4x Gb 3200 MHz cas 15 - Asus TUF RTX 4080 16 Gb - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 2TB - 2x Sata 600 SSD 500 Mb - Corsair D4000 Airflow case - NXT Krajen Z63 AIO liquide cooling - FOV : 200 degrees My flightsim vids : https://www.youtube.com/user/fswidesim/videos?shelf_id=0&sort=dd&view=0

March 27, 201511 yr What a fantastic video! Nice light! And just another proof that videos on YT is a stuttering mess (ok, exaggerating a bit), especially in panning shots. The downloaded video was way smoother. Using a 780Ti in 1080, but will try your settings. In "screenshot mode", unfortunately I need NI 4xSGSS too, ref the resolution.. You are probably tired of all the questions, but can I ask what is your Nvidia CP settings? Sync enabled (not 1/2 refresh rate I recon, since your monitor is 30Hz)? And, are you using REX for other textures than clouds? Olewww.flightsimnorway.com
March 27, 201511 yr These are the updated settings I'm going to settle on (maxed out Shadow Cast Distance) ... ended running my monitor at 30Hz rather than 60Hz ... just seems to work better with P3D: http://www.robainsco...n_X_4K_Set.html Rob, When you run your monitor at 30Hz do you just switch to that refresh for P3D and then back to 60Hz for normal desktop work?I run P3d on a 46" 1080P TV which can handle 24Hz and 30Hz input signals. I got a very smooth experience in P3D when I set 1080P 30Hz in display properties, but normal mouse response felt very laggy. Regards, Daz
March 27, 201511 yr And just another proof that videos on YT is a stuttering mess Yes, time of day, YouTube server load, ISP, your location, HTML5 player YouTube use, etc. etc. ... all factor into the stutter experience which is why I provide a download link to the source MP4 video file so folks can view locally ... especially if view in 4K. what is your Nvidia CP settings? They are whatever the default (which in most settings is Application controlled) is for NCP (why I didn't provide any link to it) ... only thing I change is the monitor refresh rate 30Hz or 60Hz and that's NOT done in the 3D application section it's global and done in the "Change Resolution" section. So far I'm just using REX soft clouds, no other textures. When you run your monitor at 30Hz do you just switch to that refresh for P3D and then back to 60Hz for normal desktop work? No, on most quality 4K monitor there is no need to run beyond 30Hz for desktop duty ... there is no flicker and image quality is excellent, 60Hz is really only needed for 3D shooters. No issues with mouse response or any input response, yoke, rudders, etc. However , as I am flying over Europe only I always have them maxed out with MSAA 4x. 8X MSAA is the max setting? On very heavy cloud layers, I'll drop to 2X MSAA (no visual difference, VC remains sharp) as I approach and fly thru the cloud layer, then once above the clouds back ot 8X MSAA. But really depends on how thick the cloud layer is ... in most cases I just don't care if it drops a little, only in extreme conditions. Cheers, Rob.
March 27, 201511 yr @Rob : I meant clouds detail maxed out. And I use MSAA set to 4X, not 8x. 5950x3d 5.4-5.7 GHz - Asus ROG 870 Crosshair Apex - GSkill Neo 2x 24 Gb 6000 mhz / cas 26 - MSI RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC - 1x SSD M2 6000 2TB - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 1Tb - Corsair 5400 case - Corsair 360 liquid cooling set - 3x 75’ TCL tv. 13600 6 cores @ 5.1 GHz / 8 cores @ 4.0 GHz (hypterthreading on) - Asus ROG Strix Gaming D - GSkill Trident 4x Gb 3200 MHz cas 15 - Asus TUF RTX 4080 16 Gb - 1x SSD M2 2800/1800 2TB - 2x Sata 600 SSD 500 Mb - Corsair D4000 Airflow case - NXT Krajen Z63 AIO liquide cooling - FOV : 200 degrees My flightsim vids : https://www.youtube.com/user/fswidesim/videos?shelf_id=0&sort=dd&view=0
March 27, 201511 yr Rob, that was an incredible video...congrats! It shows the best of everything to do with our hobby at present. Again, incredible realism, and the smoothness came across.... Wow.....
March 27, 201511 yr Rob, Another drool-inducing video...great stuff indeed! Regarding your settings I see that you have HDR enabled (which was already obvious from the video) but somehow you've managed to keep the internal VC lighting and displays looking 'normal'. As I've mentioned elsewhere probably the biggest headache I'm still having with P3D these days is balancing the HDR effects for the external environments (which look awesome) and the internal VC models (which look awful, at least on my setup). I don't own the Q400 (yet) but on the PMDG aircraft and even the RA TDuke having HDR enabled causes the instrument lighting (especially at night) to be way overcooked and the colors of things like the PFD are shifted and completely washed out...like a very badly overexposed photograph. It also causes white or light-colored text and labels to appear fuzzy and unfocused. I'm sure the 4K res is helping a lot with the razor-focused images, but have you applied any of your other tweaks or mods to the shader files (or elsewhere) to get such a good lighting balance between the internal and external environments? Looking forward to more videos in the future...even if they set an impossible target for many of us! Kevin S

I can also get it looking superb in the day time, but at night it completely blows out the virtual cockpit, especially if panel lights are turned on (and any MFDs and such.)
March 27, 201511 yr Question....I would imagine this was asked long ago before I switched to P3D but why do we have to actually go to a flight to change settings?? I liked the FS9/FSX ability to get there without loading a flight. Or am I missing a trick? FaxCap
