July 6, 201510 yr I so agree, Camsdad13. I belong to a VA that meets at our local Air Force base. (Ysterplaat FAYP). We started off with about 12-15 guys, meeting every second Saturday. The guys were keen & I used to pitch up at around 08:00 to open up for our sessions that went on to about 16:00. We, Cape Virtual, also mentor about 60 kids, The Young Falcons, (30 juniors, 30 seniors) as part of the base's 2 year community upliftment project. We have built un an Avro Shackleton simulator as well as an AeroMachi MB 326 twin seater simulator. This aircraft, known here as an Impala, was used as a trainer. The sims, as well as our 20 PC's that the kids learn/train on all use FS9. (Perfect for us, as it can run the aircraft models as well as our local freeware scenery.( Sorry, FSX just cannot come to the party!) We all used to bring our PC's, monitors, etc for our beloved Saturday sessions. However, time has gone by, & natural attrition taken place. We only now get about 2-3 of us there on our sessions, & it has become more of a chat session than a flying session. We have about 3-4 guys that have recently got their PPL's, & our sessions have become more of a 'Fishing Club' session, with the guys talking about their real flights. The simmers have slowly drifted away. some going the on-line route. So, is the hobby contracting? or becoming more focused, as we have so many choices... FS9, FSX, FSX:SE, P3D, X-Plane?? In the old days at our club, we flew vitually exclusively FS9, with a few on FSX, networked via FSHost. Ahhh, for the good 'ol days!! Robin "Onward & Upward" ... To the Stars, & Beyond...
July 6, 201510 yr FSX runs as smooth as silk these days on mid range hardware , and with the right addons it looks stunning This is video shows just how far it has come. It may be time for some here to give it another look Enjoy
July 6, 201510 yr There's always an fsx troll on this forum! Super VC10 into LOWI with PF3 at a cinema near you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=298UDyNmgUA
July 6, 201510 yr There's always an fsx troll on this forum! Why would showing that video be trolling ? I posted it because it may just help dispel some of the myths that I have read in this thread, such as FSX runs poorly, FSX is not much better graphically than FS9 ect. This is a chance for anyone who installed the FSX demo in 2006 and promptly deleted it to see how far it has come. and yes it did look bad and ran even worse back then Anyone who enjoys the microsoft flight sims regardless what version should be able to enjoy that video and be pleased that we have software as good as this available to us. I don't get why some in this forum are so hostile to anything FSX, it's the same hobby folk's
July 6, 201510 yr The reason is that Effeh Sex is always misrepresented. That video is gorgeous, but most certainly not running on "mid range hardware". In fact, one discovers, it is not even rendered in-sim, it is entirely post-processed to make it look fluid. And there's always a caveat of some sort. Did I notice that ground shadows were turned off to stop it tripping over its own feet? FS2004 has no ifs and buts or OOMS or VAS or other acronyms, you just load it to the limit and fly. Anyway, this is not one of THOSE topics ... again. Go play in your own forum, OK?
July 6, 201510 yr I waited for the release of FSX SP1 before taking the plunge. During this farce, I installed a second optical drive (as you do!) rebooted and launched FSX SP1 only for it to CTD, repeatedly. I checked out the forums and sure enough, other suckers (sorry, FSX'ers) were having the same issue. I had to uninstall FSX SP1 and re-install it with the second optical drive "pre-installed" before it would even launch. I seriously doubt that better hardware has "fixed" that kind of issue, however I do NOT advise anyone to try it just to prove me wrong - it'll ruin your weekend and it's only Monday today! July 6, 201510 yr OK, so I guess name calling is OK as long as it comes from this direction. Where did this come from? I'm playing left field today and I never saw it pass. Must have come out of right field.
July 7, 201510 yr Moderator Anyway, this is not one of THOSE topics ... again. Go play in your own forum, OK? Tell that to Jon_aus. He's one of the most vocal FSX haters and spends his share of time in the FSX forum and no one tells him to leave. I thought we we all in this together as simmers. Why does there have to be such discord between folks just because they don't like the sim the other fellow is using. The main issue of friction between the two camps in my view is when people take nasty shots at one another by saying that one's sim looks like a cartoon or things of that nature. It's those types of posts back and fourth between FS9 users and FSX users that usually cause the flare ups. Of course it doesn't help when some one posts a video showing what FSX can do on today's hardware and people still dispute that it was over edited, post processed, etc. Granted some FSX videos probably are, but there are also a lot that aren't and still display great colors, fluidity, and cinematography. Some people even post videos that they took using a camera which are raw footage and not processed in anyway. Here's shocking news though, contrary to what people read on the internet forums like here and other FS forums, not everyone gets bad FPS and OOM's. If that were the case do you think people would be using it still and would developers be spending the majority of their time developing for it? Of course not. If it were the majority having these issues we would all be on FS9 now. Just because some users here couldn't get it working great for whatever reason, doesn't mean that everyone else had the same results, as hard as that might seem to believe. I just wish as a community people would just respect what each other use and stop the nagging back and forth. For us who love FSX we know that we won't change a hard core FS9 users mind and that's ok. Neither will an FS9 user convince someone who successfully uses FSX that FS9 is better. Not gonna happen either way and that's fine as well. OK, so I guess name calling is OK as long as it comes from this direction. Exactly. If you're in the FS9 forum it's OK to do it to FSX users, and in the FSX forum it's OK to do it to FS9 users, but if your a user of the opposite sim, then you can't do it in the opposing forum. July 7, 201510 yr FS2004 has no ifs and buts or OOMS or VAS or other acronyms, you just load it to the limit and fly. I can point you to a new thread just today at another major FS forum of a FS9 user having OOMs with just FS9 and a PMDG plane. No, I didn't call him a liar or accuse him of making anything up. I did however ask him to turn down his sliders in FS.
July 7, 201510 yr some one posts a video showing what FSX can do on today's hardware and people still dispute that it was over edited, post processed, etc. Granted some FSX videos probably are Eh?? Sorry for sounding a little grumpy... comes down to a question of manners. Just like we generally don't cross-quote posts on AVSIM from say, flightsim.com or simviation.com, so discussing the vagaries of "other" flightsim software really has no place in the FS2004 forum. When people come in to this forum and want to prove a point about "their" sim, it is mostly irrelevant and often just rude.
July 7, 201510 yr Most software, particularly expansions ... scenery, aircraft etc., is sold by download these days. Only Aerosoft I believe offer some boxed products any longer. Natural progression. B) Yeah I understand that, but it's not a good thing from the POV of the public profile of the hobby. Eh?? Sorry for sounding a little grumpy... comes down to a question of manners. Yes, if you say that you prefer FS9 on the grounds of performance on the equipment that you actually own rather than the equipment you would own if you had £1000 to blow on a dedicated sim PC, you just get the likes of Jim coming on here going "Your choice is invalid because your computer is s**t! ", which is not just rude but completely irrelevent.
July 7, 201510 yr Jim coming on here going "Your choice is invalid because your computer is s**t! ", which is not just rude but completely irrelevent. FYI, Jim could care less about what sims you use and on what equipment you use. He is happy for every simmer out there. However, he will call out the things that are total b.s. with whatever sim is being discussed.
