Maddening Lag Spikes after takeoff

Recommended Posts

Ok, I've about come to my wits end regarding this. Here is my situation; I will load up a flight, can be the NGX, or pretty much anything short of the default ultralight and everything will be fine on the ground; good steady (locked at 30 with) FPS, no problems... Once I take off, within a minute or two I will get a lag spike, no warning, no FPS drops, the sim will just freeze.. sound still working, and after about 1-1.5 seconds it will go back to working... any control inputs I make when frozen, will be applied during that time, so the plane will "warp" to where it should be if it hadn't been frozen for that brief moment. These lag spikes will then continue, at any altitude, at complete random, until I land. After landing, they stop.

I've tried searching every forum, and have tried every tweak from the well known (bufferpools=0, affinitymask=84, etc.) to the obscure (disabling multimedia class scheduler.) I've tried DX9, and DX10 (w/ Fixer) with the same results.. nothing helps at all. Disabling AI traffic makes no difference, lowering sliders (autogen, etc) doesn't help either, disabling scenery areas, ditto.. always the same problem, no matter what. (No, it is NOT FSUIPC Autosave, or Timesync)

I'm close to nuking my whole install and rebuilding from the ground up, but I figured I would ask the community for help in case there is one little setting or known issue that I'm overlooking. My system is not top of the line anymore (i7 OC'd to 3.8, and GTX 960) but it gets the job done very well, aside from this particular problem. Any help or advice is appreciated.. thanks.

Help AVSIM continue to serve you!

Make sure you are not using any multisampling transparency AA in your Nvidia Inspector (NI) only use Supersampling modes. Also I find things are smoother limiting VSYNC to 1/2 in NI. It's unusual to have this issue in FSX-SE, but was common with FSX-Box.

Are you using a Corsair keyboard by chance? I had the exact same issue and it took 3 months to figure out. It was a lousy keyboard driver. Funny thing was no other games were affected except FSX and P3D.

there is a small program I found that finds hung processes and will start pointing you in the direction of what is causing the hangup( drivers etc)

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/what_is_hang.html

EDIT : if you run FSX as admin , then you need to run this as admin as well...

I'd try making a backup of your cfg and letting the sim build a new one for you without all the Bojote tweaks and see how you get on. I think things like Highmemfix are not needed in the SE version as that has been corrected by default. Plus some of the other Bojote tweaks might not be needed in the SE version and might be hurting you now since there have been some subtle improvements made to SE over the MS boxed version.

Once you try the new default stock cfg you can add some tweaks from there.

I noticed you have multiple display device entries, are you running more than one monitor as one screen would generally just have one entry. I also was wondering if you created this cfg prior to your over clock as the procspeed value seems kind of low for that overclock. The value doesn't make any difference, but I used to run an E8400 at 3.85 ghz and creating a new cfg with that overclock gave me a procspeed value over 10000. At first I though maybe you copied this cfg over from a an FSX:MS install judging from some of the tweaks you have.

He's running in DX10, so having 2 display device entries are normal. The first one with no params would be for DX9 and the one with the AA setting would be for DX10.

Good to know, thanks Tom. I've only ever run in DX9 mode so I wasn't aware of that. That's also why I said typically, as I thought there might be some other reason why you'd have dupes, but didn't know what the other circumstance would be.

Thanks for the replies. Turns out I did have multisampling AA on, so that is now off. I always did run at 1/2 Vsync to stop screen tearing. Still doing some experimenting, and trying out the WhatisHang prog, will update soon.

Ok.. still at wits end here..

Tried removing multisampling..problem remains

Tried the WhatisHang program and only thing showing was fsx.exe

The lag spikes seems to occur when the game has to load some terrain, hence why it doesn't happen on the ground, and jets get this faster than props...moving faster tend to do that... So I tried bumping up TextureMaxLoad, and the Bandwidth_Multiplier to try to force it to load it faster.. it helped.. but gave me stutters rather than smooth FPS with random big spikes.. no good

So.. I bit the redpill and figured that my system just wasn't up to snuff.. so I started taking down the sliders.. lowering texture res, mesh complexity, water, etc. incrementally to see if I could make it go away... no dice; even after I bottomed out the sliders, it still occurred. This is bittersweet because one one hand, I know I can run the sim on basically any setting with good FPS, but bad because after all my tests, I still get lag spikes...

I guess I could uninstall FTX Vector, and UTX...but at that point, why even play FSX? If I want to fly over crappy terrain, I'd fly with FS9...

You got to run your test with a new FSX cfg un tweaked and no inspector settings and see how that fly's. It might not look good but it will give you a better idea on what's going on and were to look. IF it doesn't happen then you know its a setting that's causing it.

Yeah man, I agree with Josh.  Start all over with a fresh cfg file and leave it be.  Load up a flight and follow the same procedures you did before to see if the lag spikes still occur.  That is the BEST and SAFEST way to troubleshoot right now.  IF everything is working correctly, one by one, reinstall your add-ons, remembering to load up a flight after each install.  I know it's a pain the butt, but think about this:  If you nuked everything and started over doing what you did before with installing everything at once, you'll never be able to figure out what add-on (if any) are causing the problem.

Do you use UT2 traffic by any chance? Sometimes FSX will hang while new traffic is injected. That's why I use WOAI traffic mostly. (Although I recently been trying UT2 again, because I get less AI vectoring instructions with my ATC (PFE))

Many people (including me) have encountered problems with freezes from the updates that suck CPU power from MS. There is a list of about 10 of these that were installed to monitor your windows use and send that data to MS for market research for WIN10. However, On my new machine I am getting this too without the updates. So I am at a loss too. I got 40-70 FPS and sudden freezes. Only thing that eliminates them for me is flying with clear sky.

Make sure real time protection on your antivirus is turned off when you fly

Are you using a Corsair keyboard by chance? I had the exact same issue and it took 3 months to figure out. It was a lousy keyboard driver. Funny thing was no other games were affected except FSX and P3D.

there is a small program I found that finds hung processes and will start pointing you in the direction of what is causing the hangup( drivers etc)

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/what_is_hang.html

EDIT : if you run FSX as admin , then you need to run this as admin as well...

I am using the Corsair K50, what is the solution to this driver issue?

Edit; I hope it is not removing the driver. After uninstalling the driver, I now have no "G" Keys and it seems no freezing either.

Can I make a suggestion.  Load a flight and have procexp64 (Process Explorer) running at the same time.  Keep one eye on the flight after takeoff and a second on the processes.  When the pause happens, look for a spike in CPU usage happening at the same time on Process Explorer.  Do this over and over again until you nail down the culprit.  It will point you in the right direction of something external.  If its not there then at least you know its in FSX and you can try to work on that part next.  This is what I did to get rid of a long pause after takeoff that turned out to be the AV running a scan.  It was also doing it on the ground but I did not notice it because I was mostly stopped.

Completely remove the driver and any traces of it.  Get the new software and possibly a keyboard bios update.

Make sure you follow the directions regarding the 2 plugs and USB 2.0 and 3.0 ( 2 plugs for USB 2, 1 for USB 3)

If that doesn't work you'll have to contact their support ( good luck)

Also note a bad macro can cause "flooding" IE you are sending constant input and flood the games input buffers   =  stuttering

Just on a hunch, I tried disabling UTX and flying with just OrbX and Vector.. No lag spikes at all. So I cranked up the sliders to the highest, max autogen, traffic, etc.. and still ginned along with a steady locked 30 fps and no lag spikes. I'm not sure if UTX was the sole culprit, or just the straw that broke the camel's back, but FSX is smooth as glass now.

This is good, but disappointing as well.. because I love UTX, and ran it (medium sliders) with no problems back when I had a GTX 285, and no overclock. How is the performance for UTX 2.0? I can get it for 15 bucks, so it may be worth a try regardless, I just hope it dances well with Vector.

At this point I have removed the driver and it is amazing, no stutters and no freezing. Thanks for your response, will give it a go.

UTX, Vector, any scenery program that adds detail is going to be a big drag on your system. Default scenery is very basic and there is a big difference in performance.
