October 8, 201510 yr Wise move Jeroen, you probably saved a few people going down the same route. Including me. Thanks, Jeroen, for sharing your experience. I was in hope, DX12 would shift load at least a bit more towards the GPU, but this seems to have been taken off the agenda for quite some time now. October 8, 201510 yr So hopefully Version 3.1 and forward will look further into moving tasks from CPU to GPU. We can only hope  At least SLI is now working well Michael Moe Michael Moe
October 8, 201510 yr Thanks for the encouragements and kind words and I'm glad to be of help. One advantage of returning the 980 Ti is that I decided to keep v3. I still was on the fence yesterday but after 'saving' 730 euro's (LOL!) I thought 'Ah, what the heck, I can miss those 200 euro's now...' But seriously, I still was on the fence but after looking at all fixes once more and thinking about the little things I do like (better reflections, HDR, transparent ATC, a very slightly better performance compared to v2.5 and most importantly: a future with updates) I decided to keep it. So I immediately wiped my OS disk, reinstalled Windows 10 and P3D v3 (I was up and running in no time, really) and I am all happy again now. (Somehow nothing pleases me more than a fresh and very clean (I even remove all MS crap apps) Windows install. )

October 8, 201510 yr Sorry to hear that you had to go through all that hassIe Jan, however I thank you for reporting your results. I have a 3770k system at 4.5ghz and was wondering what benefits I would get from upgrading my 780gtx to a 980gtx. You just confirmed my expectations. One of the things holding me back from moving to a 4k monitor is that I also expect that it would need to be accompanied by a new 980ti or better. If I bought those for myself now, there are some that would be expecting some pretty nice Christmas presents. If I bought those for myself now, there are some that would be expecting some pretty nice Christmas presents. Ted Your welcome. Yes, that 4k monitor would indeed also need something like a 980 Ti but for me going down that road is totally useless because I would still be using similar settings and getting similar performance... and I would never buy a 980 Ti AND a 4K monitor only so things look a bit sharper...! I could ONLY justify spending money on all this if I can get a LOT better performance and, if possible, also use higher settings. And as it is right now even a complete new PC, CPU and GPU and all, won't give me that. So I am fine with what I have right now.
October 8, 201510 yr I agree with everything you said, which are the other reasons I'm holding back. The reason that I desire a 4k monitor is not just for the extra clarity, which would be nice, but mainly for the additional vertical field of view in the cockpit. I currently use a 3840 x 1024 resolution 3 monitor system which costs me 15 fps to use the 3 monitors vs. 1. However, the expanded horizontal field of view in the cockpit is like power windows in a car, once you have them there's no going back. Now I want the vertical expansion so I don't have to scroll up and down as much to see all of the panel. Back to the car analogy, I want the heated seats now! I'm at my FPS lower limit in the PMDG 737 and I just can't justify purchasing a Cray computer right now, so I've just got to decide if I'm willing to give up scenery eye candy for the additional field of view. Rob's 4k video's sure aren't helping me to resist when I see his cockpit shots. October 8, 201510 yr Thanks for the encouragements and kind words and I'm glad to be of help. Thanks from me as well. I also had plans to buy a 980Ti and you saved me from a huge disappointment. In my triple monitor setup the card might improve fps a little bit, but the last two days I realized that the only situations in which I feel some additional fps would be nice are those when I'm sitting in the PMDG 777 at a mega airport. And these are situations in which the CPU and not the GPU is maxed out. I think it is also a wise decision to keep Prepar3d v3. I'm really loving it. I just flew out of Aerosoft EGLL Extended in the PMDG 777 with FTX Global, openLC EU, max LOD and 4096 textures. I'm now over the Atlantic on my way to KJFK and I have over 1 Gb of free VAS which is not decreasing! That would have been absolutely impossible in v2.5. I didn't have to deactivate any scenery or apply any other tricks to keep VAS within limits. Just flying without all the hassle to avoid OOMs. How great is that... October 8, 201510 yr Can I ask how you installed EGLL? David Murden. October 8, 201510 yr Can I ask how you installed EGLL? I still have EGLL installed in P3D v2. In this case it is as simple as adding the relevant subfolders from the aerosoft folder in the v2 installation (I'm not at my simming PC, but I think there is a EGLL-terrain and a EGLL-airport folder in there) to the v3 scenery.cfg. In addition, I added the effects folder of my v2 installation to the effects.cfg. This is because a lot of airports have custom effects. I'm not sure though if EGLL does. This way you can add most already installed airports to the v3 installation. Only very few airports consist of more files than their own scenery folder and some effects. That's why the described method works ok. For EGLL it definitely works without problems. [email protected] ∣ Asus ROG Strix B650E-E ∣ 64Gb@6000MT ∣ NVidia 5090 FE
October 9, 201510 yr I made the transition from a GTX 770 to a 980TI on a 4790K, 16GB RAM, SSD. Although the gain in good weather is not overwhelming, it is certainly worth the performance gain if you fly in bad weather with lots of clouds. I would never go back. October 9, 201510 yr ........ BTW I also had a look at GPU-Z to see what the load was on my 780: it hardly reached 60%, sometimes peaked to 70%, so even the 780 is already waiting for the CPU. No wonder the 980 Ti was boring itself to death. Indeed, no surprise that the GTX980 can't give you much more performance compared to the GTX780. You should investigate why your CPU isn't able to feed your GPU much better. I had no problems to load my GTX780TI above 90%. Spirit
October 9, 201510 yr You should investigate why your CPU isn't able to feed your GPU much better. There isn't much to investigate really. It's simply because P3D just as FSX is CPU bound in most situations. Especially if you run low resolutions with limited AA settings. And loading a 780Ti (or even the 980Ti) at 100% is no problem at all. Just use 8xSGSS and fly into dense clouds. So what should it tell us that you were able to load the 780Ti above 90%? October 9, 201510 yr .................I ran 3D Mark yesterday on both cards: the 780 reached a score of almost 10.000 while the 980 Ti passed 15.000.................. Just did the FireStrike benchmark test with my ASUS GTX780TI and reached 11351 scores. Spirit
