October 26, 201510 yr Hello guys! I am currently thinking about switching from my Boxed FSX to another platform. Either FSX:SE or P3D V3. The only thing which is continuously preventing me from doing that... is incompatibility of some addons. Most notably AES (which I enjoy using with combination of GSX). I have approximately 20 - 30 FPS in PMDG 737NGX at the payware scenery. It's not bad... but it could still be better. What I would like to ask... should I really switch? And to which platform? My biggest issue with P3D is the huge price, and also you need to buy some addons again. From PMDG for exapmle. My HW specs: Intel Core i7 3770K OC to 4.3 GHz 16 GB of RAM Nvidia GTX 680 2GB VRAM Thanks very much for your opinions! Jan Podlipsky
October 26, 201510 yr I would go FSX:SE, specially if you can wait for one of those promotional sales. In 2016 Dovetail will announce their new sim, and I do not want to spend more money in stuff, specially buying again, and for a much higher price, what I already have running in FSX:SE ( which I paid $5 for in one of the promotional sales, and works like a charm with all of my add-ons... ) The worst decision I could have made a couple of months ago was buying P3Dv2, when v3 was just about to be released. Search their forums and you'll see the usual strive for no OOMs and smoothness begin... I am sorry but no go for me, until they are up to a 64 bit version - yes it'll be incompatible with our add-ons, but at least I will be paying again for something really new . And how does it work with the Steam updates? Do you have to add the sceneries again? Or reinstall the Addons? Jan Podlipsky
October 26, 201510 yr I never experimented a Steam update because I am using their latest version, so, I can't answer that :-/ Also, if you can wait for a promotional sale, and get FSX:SE for something like $5 just like I did, it'll be an even better option, IMO... Just compare to buying P3Dv3, plus the PMDGs and A2As.... October 26, 201510 yr Steam updates do not require re-installing any 3rd party addons. I made the switch 6 months ago from boxed. It;s quite nice. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit and Steve's DX-10 fixer. Side by side installations of Steam and FSX create some issues, but these can all be worked out (at least for me) with some research.
October 26, 201510 yr Best thing to do is to keep just FSX-SE, that way every normal FSX installer recognize your FSX-SE as THE FSX installation. But yeah, i would also suggest FSX-SE at this point, wait for november where there are autumn Steam sales and you'll likely be able to grab it for 5 euros. Chock 1.1: "The only thing that whines louder than a jet engine is a flight simmer."
October 26, 201510 yr I would also recommend going for FSX:SE. Most if not all your old FSX addons is going to work, and it is a lot smoother then P3D. The graphics might not be as "pretty", but in my mind it's not a deal breaker. I just requested a refund on my P3Dv3 purchase. Was never really satisfied with it. Now I have FSX:SE and X-Plane, and both of them are running very smooth. Can highly recommend both of them.
October 26, 201510 yr You have nothing to loose with P3D v3. You ask for a refund within 2 months. Lukasz Kulasek i7-8700k, RTX 2080 TI, 32 GB RAM, ASUS TUF Z370-PRO Gaming, Oculus Rift CV1
October 26, 201510 yr I really like FSX:SE, especially after purchasing the DX10 Fixer. Looks and runs great, and I've never had VAS depletion issues. P3D is a good simulator, but it still needs some time to mature. The visuals are a bit of a double edged sword. The visuals are better with the volumetric fog and lighting, but they take a step back when it comes to aliasing. The antialiasing is bad, especially the texture antialiasing which you will want to force to cut down on the terrible shimmering. It will run down your GPU in cloudy situations, where as in FSX, the texture antialiasing barely seems to put much load on the GPU. I would get FSX:SE first, and then if you want to experience the cutting edge, try P3D out. Daniel Moser
October 26, 201510 yr No one has pointed out some addons only support fsx? Aes and Reality-Xp are fsx boxed only as an example. That keeps me on fsx boxed. I have cleaned up my install and made the platform very stable. If you do upgrade, go P3D for the better features.

October 27, 201510 yr P3dv3 is a completely different sim. Yes, some add-ons will work & others will not. So, the choices are: 1. FSX original boxed. (the Vista of flight sims) quite mature now, with plenty add-ons, not being updated after about 10 years. 2. FSX:SE .. Original core is 10 years old, but has been tweaked & modified. Claimed to be better than the original. 3. P3Dv3. Based on ESP, MS's commercial flight sim. This is pretty much a new version, about 10 versions done now, & is claimed to be superior. Academically, the latest so far. So, choices..... Which is better? you choose what will suit you. We all have our own opinions. Me, I do run P3D, but, more often than not, I'm flying my FS9 modded 'Golden Wings'. For me, the old 'low's 'n slow's' suit my flying at the moment. Robin "Onward & Upward" ... October 27, 201510 yr I've tried ROF, but I got lost in France (lol). I prefer scenery & add-ons from the Ford Project guys, Bill Lyons & Milton, of course. As well as the old 'Steam' (powered, not sim) add-ons, blimps etc. that I found. Robin "Onward & Upward" ... To the Stars, & Beyond...
October 27, 201510 yr If you have a lot of money to burn and are just getting into flight simming, you should go P3Dv3. If you like me have spent years and thousands of dollars it's tough to give up the large library and move up to Steam or P3D and not have all the addons available.
