Generally, Who needs General Aviation?

Featured Replies

Not much GA around these parts...

But I put it to you that there is a need for something suited to those hops of maybe 100 nm.

This is it, a full IFR suite including autopilot, making cruising the sights a real pleasure.

And of course it gets in and out of places...

EC135 - a beautiful helicopter. One of my favourites. The Air Ambulance for our area in the UK is a 135. Which brand of sim 135 is the one in your shots?

Thank you!

Which brand of sim 135

Model is by ICARO, they do amazing work don't they?

And have an amazing array of variations.

Of course they also do the AW 139, surely one of the best helicopters (Freeware too!) available to flightsimmers.

The inside bits very satisfying too... I would never trade this for a Cessna 152 :)

Nice to see a "Carabineros de Chile" repaint here, at LatinVFR's SCEL - in my opinion this is one of the best add-on sceneries in terms of giving the real-world-airport's atmosphere to us simmers.

I have no idea about helicopters. Is it unusual for a helicopter to have autopilot? What kind of automation does it have? Is it basic automation as in HDG SEL and ALT or does it have LNAV/VNAV capability (or equivalent)

Are any of ICARO's helis FSX native? On a brief google sortie all I could find were FS2004 and FS9 versions. Jaime, looking at that shot of the AW139, the autopilot seems to be pretty comprehensive,  assuming the real thing also has one. One thing I would hope to find in a helicopter autopilot is hover & position hold :) I believe the Apache has that kind of system.

Love the shots. The EC-135 and AW-139 are two of my favorite helicopters. The EC-145 and the BK-117 (both made by H&S Design) are my other favorite helicopters.

Refreshing shots.

...here, at LatinVFR's SCEL

Harald if I was impressed before by your breadth of flightsim knowledge, well...

Is it unusual for a helicopter to have autopilot?

Well they tend to appear in multimillion dollar buys, but they are widely used, yes.

Are any of ICARO's helis FSX native

No. These shots are all from FS2004.

...hover & position hold

Yes the autopilot has LNAV, autoland and takeoff, and fixed hover modes. It's not what you are used to, and sometimes is a little fickle. But that's helo flying for you :)

...favorite helicopters

Agree there are some really special models. In fact there are quite a lot!

I'm thinking also of Nemeth's Squirrels which are extraordinary.

And the JustFlight payware Robinson R44 is stunning. I'll put up some shots of that one.

With the EC135, is there a way of getting the VC windows clear? I don't use it even though it is such a beautiful model because I can hardly see the outside...

I know - I fly radio controlled ones! The only "autopliot" I have on mine is the gyro controlling the tail rotor pitch servo :D

No big thing here. Once I had to "wait" here a whole day for a connection flight, it was a very interesting "waiting time". It brings me, btw, another idee for your "real world vs. sim" topic - if you allow?

Ah... OK. I've never been anywhere in South America, for some reason!

Good comparison shots, keep them coming, especially if you don't tell us where :)

I fly radio controlled ones!

I erm, CRASH radio controlled ones. I much prefer flightsim helos as they are more easily replaceable...

...getting the VC windows clear

Sascha the first shots are from VC, which aren't too dark, I thought. Maybe one of your ENB or SFX shaders affects this?

It's more the way it handles in the sim, actually, so I made you a little clip to see:

No auto anything here, just perfect for that 30nm hop down to the farm.
