HTC Vive vs Rift VR for P3D?

Featured Replies

Whats got me worried is the 1 year warranty. That implies they have little faith in the longevity of their product. Most computer hardware has 3 or 5 year warranties these days/

  • Well I setup the rift yesterday, it wasn't hard to do , took about 1 hr. Only issue is I have only one hdmi out on my msi 980ti so I had to connect monitor with Dvi while I plugged the rift into my hd

Maybe someone is an owner of Vive/Rift and GTX 1080 and can write about flight sim experience?

That's the reason why I am holding back. I cannot even stand lowish fps (<60fps) with TrackIR using a G-sync monitor. Makes me dizzy after while and it is eye-taxing.

I had the rift and used it with flyinside for about a week before returning it.,

..yup...sadly me too...as I have said elsewhere it's going to take 4K before VR is viable...11K by 2018 from Samsung realllly makes things interesting!

I am thinking about selling my rift, Im not sure i can shake the motion sickness feelings I get from using it.

Can you return it?

That's what I did (to Microsoft Online Store in my case)

I bought it through amazon so Im not sure I can do that.

AMazon is superb for returns, so if he could return it at Micro$oft,,don't see why you would have issues with Amazon...

I still cant decide on this.. I have an unopened rift sitting here.. however, the more i read the more i think the HTC Vive is just as good, at least in terms of resolution (no difference?).

I will also use it for gaming as well and it seems as of now the Vive has more gaming support with Steam etc.

I was going to set either of these up in my small office space where my sim/main rig is.. its an area of about 12x10, maybe the min of about 6x6 for the vive anyway.. I guess with vive you have to mount the two sensors on the sides or corners.. i also have my main living room htpc which is a high end rig and i wanted to have the setup out there as well (with the same goggles).. in looking at the vive i cant see how you could order a second set of sensors (to prevent having to remove them and move to the living room when gaming out there in the much larger space vs the office space)..

So I guess again, i was hoping someone may have used both sets of goggles and can say, yeah go for the vive or vice versa..

I saw in recent posts some showed the hack to increase the resolution in the oculus debug tool.. is there something similar for Vive?

I also thought maybe the leap motion was a cool answer for flicking switches, but given there is a fps hit, maybe not so much.

I think ill be ok in either arena in terms of the resolution drop/grain issue, i'll take immersion over that.. however yeah i'm going from 24" x 3 at ~3800x1080 to the goggle resolution.

At any rate, i'm thinking ill sell the rift and grab the vive.

I have Rift and doing extensive testing with Flyinside.  Rift for now.  Next year it could be different.  Both the VR headsets are "Beta" quality headwear.  Some software favors Vive while others favor Rift.  Get the one which suits your need.  Steam store is tied with Vive vs Rift has their own app store.

I just discovered that apparently you can play Oculus titles via the Vive now as well, as a restriction that forced a hacked software called Revived is no longer needed.  Oculus apparently opened things up a bit.

yes, you can play them via steam.  But steam GUI VR interface is so designed to give advantage to Vive and then Rift users.

as a relatively new user to the rift and using fly inside and pmdg 737 all I can say this the best and closest you are going to get in sitting in a real life cockpit, it was just an amazing experience when i loaded up the 737 in the rift, I will never go back to flying in a 2d monitor and even though the resolution is lacking the immersion factor is unbelievable, landings are so much easier now, and the experience of turning for finals and seeing that runway in the distance is just breathtaking, this is the future of everything, virtual reality will change the way we use our computers and engage with games etc, cannot wait for cv2 3 etc, this is the future of gaming.

Enable 4K resolution inside flyinside v1.6.  if you have SLI then you get VR-SLI which is awesome on Async FPS at 4K Flyinside resolution (SLI only works in P3d)

how do you do that, i had to revert back to 1.52 because using leapmotion i could not press the buttons using my fingers to set the mcp correctly.

I am a beta tester for Flyinside.  The newly released 1.6 is super stable release.  There are no VR timeouts like the 1.52 had.  Leapmotion has better support in 1.6 (Try it, I don't have leapmotion but I hear 1.6 has more support).  When you are in Flyinside settings click on resolution and choose 3840x2374.  That will enable it to have 4K resolution.  And then you can play with Nvidia Inspector to enhance AA to Prepar3d.  The controls in my pmdg 777 are almost super sharp.

Thats a great suggestion on the Nvidia.. i'm assuming that enabling say 4x sparse grid supersampling helps a lot.. yeah at the expense of frames but with the flyinside doing the work of smoothing it shouldnt matter.

I should say that in the last night I decided to try the Samsung VR Gear which i borrowed from a friend.. when you use RiftCat (PC) + SteamVR(PC) + Flyinside(PC) + Cardboard enabler + VRidge(connects to rift cat) you can do P3D on the VR Gear and it works.

I need to try the nvidia settings and play with other settings still.. i found it to be pretty fluid though "soft" and hard to see, a bit blurry at times, but that might just be settings that need to be upped either in Riftcat or in flyinside.

My Vive comes today, so this weekend i'm finally taking the full goggle plunge as well.

Are there a list of settings for FlyInside that everyone agrees are must have settings?  There was a low speed/high speed asynchronous setting I left at default so far.. I did up the resolution there and i set the sim fps rate to unlimited (which it is set this way in p3d).. also any must have prepar3d.cfg settings as well.

Has anyone toyed with the VR gear using this software combo as well, curious?  Does anyone actually use the Vive controllers for anything when doing P3D.. maybe button toggles for flyinside etc?

I also found the flyinside settings screens very very difficult to read with Samsung VR gear with the current settings i've tried.. i'm guessing this wont be an issue with the Vive.
