I got tired of analog everything, just about the time GPS & DVDs became mainstream.  I figured there was no reason for airplanes to continually clobber mountains out in this region, when there was a much better method of "where am I exactly at the moment" navigation. So much for old & bold piloting................if a pilot made it that long. As I'm now on my way to 66, I did manage long ago, to get into the smart phone age. Nice to have the ability to download spec sheets & installation manuals while on the job.  Still no desire to re-fire that antiquated sim called FS2004. Truly lacked with the graphics, and just about everything else.  May never get to P3D, as FSX  (with Orbx of course) & X-Plane 10 is sufficient at this time. Too many other hobbies, while time & legs for walking in the desert are still available.

Hello Noel

There went another one. Sue's "Definition" masterpiece.

Maybe  Definitely someone does not want to see peer support for an unjustly banned member.

Hey Birdguy. I just took the liberty of looking at your profile and all I can say is impressive, God bless and thank you for your service.

Hello Noel...

Absolutely!

I'll have to update that Vic.  I now have a great granddaughter too.

Noel,

On my first trip to SE Asia I found myself spending about 90 percent of my time with my back to 5 other guys while walking through the jolly, green jungle.  The most important lesson I gained from that experience was "It's not what I said , it's was how I said it." :)

Smile when you say that partner!

That's hard to do in writing.  In Roswell once a year you can go to one of the grammar schools and teach for a day.  I actually used that example in an English class for 6th and 7th graders.  I used the word 'Dude'.  And I spoke that word with about a half dozen different inflections which gave each recitation of that one word a different meaning.  The kids got a kick out of that.

I Earned My Spurs in Vietnam

This is a thread of diverse, frank and interesting posts.

We should be grateful that this sub-forum exists to allow such uninhibited  discussion and that it remains available as an alternative place for discussions about Orbx and its products. I hope it stays that way. Evidence of a demand for it can be found in the statistics Jim Young has posted (in Hangar Chat) for Avsim Forum topics viewed 11 April-11 July 2016 where this sub-forum is the thirteenth most viewed out of a list of close to fifty.

In a post on the Orbx Forum on 16 January this year (in the course of explaining why he was deleting a member’s post), John Venema of Orbx mentioned AVSIM in terms of “ the unofficial Orbx forum which we've asked to closed down for many years now” (sic).

If he had been successful in that goal, where could the present discussion have taken place? Would a thread of this nature have remained active (or at all) on the Orbx Forum? One wonders, especially judging by recent events  eg disappearing threads (see Noel’s post #5 and #75) or locked threads, such as the recent one with posts asking why, pending resolution of the current libs problem, the March version of the libs cannot be made available. There was a post on the Orbx Forum a couple of days ago (locked an hour later but not deleted) observing that a number of critical posts relating to the current integration/migration/libs problem had disappeared for no apparent reason. The poster went on to say that none of those posts appeared to be rude, insulting or attacks of a personal nature.  He said that he was interested in why they had vanished and he expressed a view that Moderators should not be censors.

In its Forum Rules, Orbx does not mince words in making clear that it has the sole say about its Forum and that people ought to approach it effectively  on a like it or leave it basis.

The downside of that type of approach (on whatever forum applies it) is not only the loss of robust debate (see Jim’s post #71) but also it can lead to what Zoran (post #19) describes as “tip toeing on eggshells, carefully worded posts so as not to upset anyone” and can risk giving rise to the encouragement of what Christopher Low (post #57) describes in a “wasn’t being deadly serious” way as “’yes’ men” or, as I have seen as the description used elsewhere, “######”.

I think that some of those who control internet forums (not just Orbx and not just flight sim forums but not Avsim (where, in the three years or so I have been frequenting here, the Administrators/Moderators appear reasonably to take a balanced and practical approach)) could do well to read Hans Christian Andersen’s story for children, The Emperor’s New Clothes – there may be a lesson in that tale.

Coming back to what gave birth to the current discussion. I have read only a few of Noel’s many posts on the Orbx Forum (sorry Noel, not intending to cause offence but, in daily life, I tend to read only what I need to for work or a topic elsewhere which is of really high interest to me. The standing joke about me in my family has been that since leaving school, I have read only two books which were not law books and those two books were only because I was trapped on a Great Barrier Reef island during the AirTraffic Controllers’ strike/industrial action in Australia 40 years ago (I keep pointing out that the joke is numerically a slight embellishment of what the truth is)).

However, one of Noel’s posts which I did read was the one which is attributed as being the catalyst for his banning. At the time, it seemed to me to be innocuous. Indeed, I think that Orbx ought to feel somewhat chuffed by the interest Noel has shown towards its Forum in terms of the time and effort which have gone into his posts there (see also Michael’s post #6).

Gary

PS The "######" appearing at the end of the fourth-last paragraph is not my doing. It appeared automatically on posting. I assume that what I typed is a term prohibited on the Avsim Forum in any context. I will re-read the Rules.

I choose to leave it. If I have a technical issue I might go there and search on it, but only after I've been here first. The remark about facing Australia on a prayer mat might have been just thrown out in anger or frustration, but my occasional visits to the Orbx forums have indicated to me that the caricature is not undeserved...for example...Orbx announces a release, followed by multiple pages of responses of "downloading now" (er...who cares?) or "thank you John!!". Pages and pages and pages of it. Factually useless and a complete waste of valuable 1s and 0s.

I visit forums for information. "Information" means the good stuff and the bad. I stay away from products where you can only get to the forum after purchasing (too late, mate), or where dissenting voices are silenced, and all that's left is the Hallelujah Chorus.

Oh, and by the way, I really do like Orbx scenery, and would enthusiastically recommend it...it's just the control-freakery and (seeing as the correct term is censored, let's go with another) "product/supplier-worship" that does my head in.

I just went over to the Orbx Support Forum to see if anyone might have come up with a solution to the problem I posted there about the forest covering Death Valley I posted before I was banned.

I cannot post there either.  Approximately $3,000.00 worth Orbx scenery and I can't get support now if I wanted or needed it.  They sure are vindictive over there.

I think we all get it, that their response to your comments was probably a bit too harsh. But I don't know what you (or anyone else) is gaining by keeping this thread alive. You made your point. I hope that you aren't operating with the assumption that ORBX staff never visit AVSim just to see what's happening.

Tend  to agree with you Jay  on this its going around in circles  the op  has  made his point.

What would you do, if yow were in his shoes?

Apparently He has no way to access support from ORBX.

At least the fully banned people can access the banned forum.

(Or at least that's the way it was)

According  to the op he stated he was banned till  aug1st so guess he has to wait till than, thought  there  was a  limited access   to the forum to get  support. And  since he  said  he  was  banned  again would  have thought the op would have been more careful in posting in such a way  he  wouldn't  get  banned  again.
