Active Sky Cloud Art for FSX & P3D - Released!

Concerning the sky colors: METAR data doesn't contain color data ;) so isn't this always a bit random? I can imagine certain weather data being connected with certain colors but in the end it's just a guess how things really look out there. And that's why the sky colors often seem to be wrong. The very odd colors are mainly there because 'everyone' wants tons of different colors in a texture addon, no matter what, and so they simply give you tons of different colors, real or not.

But the problem isn't that the colours don't match the weather. The problem is the colours look like something ripped straight off a Cartoon Network show and don't match anything I've ever seen, in my entire life. These weird pink and yellow gradients that don't look natural or realistic. Deep purple to a degree I've never, ever seen before. Look at Navid's Sky Set, a beautiful and accurate representation of what I'm seeing in Scandinavia. Look at Rex's various sky sets they are offering, based off pictures and actually represent a certain weather phenomenon, a season, a world location, something like that. All beautiful.

It is possible to have lots of sky sets, lots of variety, without just creating weird gradient maps in Photoshop with a random click on the colour wheel.

Sometimes, when I read various posts, I really start to chuckle. As @Bobsk8 suggested, I wonder how many have spent much time in real flight. With over 10,000 hrs of flight time I can safely say that at one time or another, I have seen every sky posted in these forums - except the square pattern.

Some of the sky and cloud patterns could only be made by mother nature - I don't think a computer program could generate them. And, to be honest, I found some of them ugly too. But that doesn't mean they were unrealistic.

Think about it - we post screenshots that we like and someone posts how awful the color is. That's just a simple difference of opinion and really doesn't showcase any product.

Personally, I've seen what *I* call cartoonish and ugly skies form every graphic product I've tried. That's the point - the developers try to accomodate different tastes so many different pallettes and textures are used. If one comes up that you don't like - fine - keep flying - it will change.

Couldn't agree more here Vic so true.

I've done a couple more NGX flights and have to say these have been the most immersive flights yet.  I did try subbing in REX soft clouds but I have gone back to ASCA textures.  I think they look just as good and better in some instances (storms).  Sky textures are the only thing I"m not using in ASCA as I have a set that I really like for dawn/dusk.  Visibility transitions are completely smooth, performance is better than ever and the clouds look stunning to me.  I had to divert around some storms during dusk during one of the flights and it was wild to look at the anvils up above me.  Here are a few shots from these flights, sorry but didn't take many screen shots of the dusk storms unfortunately!! These are mostly KBWI-KRDU using real-time WX.

Yeah, why isn't he defending the product like he's getting paid for it and gushing at every turn. What a pessimist.

Amen!!! I want to see real. Not what all the "cloud experts" here think is real. I've said it before too, Mother Nature can produce every picture I've seen here too. I have ASCA now and it's different than REX, but not wrong. The scenes it generates look just as real to me as REX does.

It seems that you are here for the sake of the argument(s) and not owing the product ;-)

You are full of assumptions in this particular topic and it doesn't add anything constructive to the discussion here.

Hence I find you rather impolite to say it very nice.

Nothing wrong with a different opinion, but it gives you not the right to be impolite.

Yeah, your useful quips and links to posts about colour blindness are an absolute content goldmine André. Another attempt at invalidating subjective opinions, just like the whole "I did X-flight hours, how many do you have? My opinion is more valid".

Apology that you didn't find my links useful I hope some else find those useful.

It's not only about color blindness that's only a small part ;-)

Anyway back on topic...

Due to one of Natures' quirks, I am one of the colour-blind statistics (as quoted in AWF's post), and I can definitely state that the multiple shades of nondescript-coloured skies seen in ASCA are exactly the same as I see in real life!    :P

Stupidly expensive rig, nonplussed Memsahib, disinterested offspring and a fascinated cat as Rio.  XP11, P3Dv3 and an Oculus Rift.

Guess we need to add text to these colours :P
