Found some syntax errors. Should work without error as follows:

I accidentally pasted the wrong code above. I edited the post, sorry for that.

In an ideal world, YES

But my text was not meant for those who understand this (and act accordingly) but for those many - partly new - users who are just new to the fun and (understandably) grab every cool new tweak ... and then forget about it and are in for a bad awakening  (and my experience proved over and over that there are more than enough users like that out there).

I fully support what you're saying, and haven't tweaked my own settings for that reason.

However.... I also blame Laminar for not exposing more of these settings in a render or environment menu within the sim, so users wouldn't be poking around like this.

If these settings were on an Advanced tab somewhere, it could also include a "Restore to Default" button that could be used for tech support, or if the user gets too deep in the weeds on various settings.

There is just no good reason for XP11 to have such simplified menus that encourage users to write scripts like this. And yes, they shouldn't be doing it right now while things are so fluid. But this will remain a problem after the release goes live. We need more granular menus for everything, including these environmental effects, right there inside the menus!

Hans, where is syntax errors? The codes are identical.  :unsure2:

I accidentally pasted your first version, edited my post in the meantime. I believe that it should read scatter_raleigh_x instead of inscatter_raleigh_x, one underscore was missing later down and one "cloud" was a duplicate. I am no expert by any means but with these modifications lua doesn't stop and you can see the colors change on the fly when you save the script and reload lua.

I'd rather thank Laminar for giving us access to private variables, which, by design, are subject to change in any upgrade.

I wouldn't be surprised if one day, Laminar becomes fed up with too much abuse of art controls and the support headaches that might come with it. So, let's use them carefully, and for exemple, not in a beta. ;)

I think people should self-restrain and avoid publishing tweaks in this early-beta phase (we're at the first public beta!).

As has been previously explained, in this phase having tweaks available to the general public will only cause headaches at Laminar and even slow down the possible improvements in the visuals.

Even Ben Supnik himself in these forum has previously said that we should wait before doing tweaks, so that should be the right thing to do.

"Society has become so fake that the truth actually bothers people".

Pascal, I believe that one of the biggest advantages of X-Plane is that it allows you to modify such controls. I fully understand the support argument, but think of other developers which clearly state that they won't support you any longer if you modify something. LR can do the same and their smart installer is quite good in restoring stock. The risk remains with the user who makes any modification. I see it this way: If a beta is already as good as XP11 then any improvement that the public can realize on its own only shows the quality of the yet unfinished product through the scalability. I am pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm which the community is showing towards this beta and hope that we can continue supporting it on its way to final release with constructive criticism and some creativity.

Murmur, you are of course right when it comes to the necessity of some self-restraint. But wouldn't you agree that if an obvious bug like the banding can be eliminated with changing a 0 to a 1 that this should not be seen as a negative influence on a beta process? As always, there are limits though.

In this very early beta phase, making these kind of tweaks public can only bring negative consequences. Many aspects of the rendering engine will certainly be changed and improved in the next weeks/months, and having a lot of people using these undocumented tweaks only increases support workload at Laminar.

These tweaks should be made public only after the rendering engine has became stable and most of its bugs corrected. As I said, Ben himself said something along these lines in a previous post.

"Society has become so fake that the truth actually bothers people".

I got the message. My sunsets are looking good now and that's what I am grateful for

That's 100% my biggest concern.

They're already not keen on us fiddling with those datarefs in stable releases & publishing the results. I can completely see them thinking it's worthwhile to lock them away from us for good if we complicate the beta with it.

To be honest, I'm not sure why they didn't make those art controls private for the beta releases to avoid this very situation. I'd even be willing to bet a bit of money that they may very well becomes private during the beta process yet.

I still plan to test a few freeware addons, just out of curiosity, but after doing so I plan on removing every addon I installed during my first hectic XP week (scenery, tons of libraries, utilities) and enjoy default XP: this way I am also sure nothing interferes with XP11 and upcoming beta updates and patches. This also goes for the tweaks. I will wait until LR officially gives me access to various settings in the sim itself. I think I like my XP setup clean and lean. ;)

I plan to do the opposite-this is a beta after all!

I wouldn't blame them, it's going to really complicate the beta process if addons start being released to modify a specific beta and users leave it installed when they upgrade which is very easy to do (and forget you even have it in the first place). It would make sense to leave them locked down until it hits stable.

Gentlemen, can we politely agree that we disagree about how to handle a beta?

It just reminded me of test driving a new car. The salesman wants the prospective customer to take the car out on a sunny afternoon, drive a few times around the block, admire the shiny chassis, the leather interior and the fabulous sound system. Then come back and buy it for cash.

The customer wants to take the car out over the weekend, see how it fits into the narrow road where he lives, drive it in pouring rain and under maximum conditions, see whether the dog can get in easily and whether the lady likes it. Then he returns the car on Monday morning, expresses his approval, waits a few weeks to make a decision and finally shows up asking to lease it for 36 months.

Same product, both legitimate approaches, just different expectations.

Happy to see that this thread remains very civilized despite the different opinions.  :hi:
