April 27, 200620 yr aww, I downloaded your westford MA Haystack scenery and enjoyed it. I have downloaded so much scenery I would be very busy if I sent a thank you note to every author. I think you should just be happy that people are downloading and using your scenery and not expect to get anything back.
April 27, 200620 yr Not quite on the same work scale as you, but I very rarely get any emails from anyone who uses my repaints. Its just something I accept, don't think that because you don't get any responses no one enjoys it.If you really do decide to leave (which I hope you don't) I wish you luck in whatever you do :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
April 27, 200620 yr hi larry, you're not the first designer to pull out for that reason and can't say i blame you. you'd think just a quick thanks would mean something but apparently it's to much trouble. personally, i think it's down right rude. they sure have enough time to enjoy your work though. give me a break! william
April 27, 200620 yr You're obviously doing it for the wrong reason. We're YOU not happy with the results of your labor?I can understand what you are feeling, it's that way in everyday life, we all like to get a pat on the back for a job well done, but it never happens as much as we like (unless you have the dream job). This is a small community compared to some. I do scenery as well and get more emails asking for a mod rather than a thank you, doesn't bother me, I enjoyed making it and using it myself. I took a break from FS and went to some other game communities. I started some simple 2D texture work in one, within a month I was asked to be a featured artist on a national site and racked up over 5 million d/ls and was in the spotlight, a far different universe than what I got here. Guess what, like in real life, your 15 minutes of fame are quickly up and it becomes harder to stay in the spotlight if that is what you crave.Look at your d/l numbers, obviously ONE other person was made happy from what you did, is that not satisfying?Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://www.calvirair.com/mcpics/mcdcvabanner.jpgCalVirAir International Best, Michael KDFW
April 27, 200620 yr Hi,Might as well follow the crowd and go payware. The money apparently makes up for lots of thank you's. :)Take care,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___ Tom Gibson CalClassic Propliner Page
April 27, 200620 yr It's a hobby. When I put in time, work or money in a hobby it's because I myself enjoy it. You made it sound like an uncompensated labor for you. Jason Zhang JasonFAA CPL SEL MEL IR CFI-I MEI AGI
April 27, 200620 yr I have never tried any of your work, Larry, but I am sure that it is all excellent.Generally, few people get notes of appreciation in this hobby (although some get many, and even they often get upset with only one or two comnplaints). As mentioned, the best way to look at this is that your work should make you happy, first and foremost. If that was the case, then perhaps you could continue creating scenery, and just share it with friends or with those you think would appreciate it.It must be said, though, that your scenery was downloaded by very many people, and that this is really the best way to show appreciation and is proof of its popularity.Best regards.Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!

I think I had a couple of responses for it but, even if I'd had none, it wouldn't have bothered me one jot.
April 27, 200620 yr "but I don't think it's out of line to expect an occasional thank you"Larry I've thanked you tremendously for your work on the Grand Coulee Dam. I've even asked you numerous times to do Glen Canyon Dam because Coulee was so great. You've never really gotten back to me on Glen... A lot of people who love your work will be hurt by your perception of the situation. I'll just say this, thanks for Coulee because it was great scenery... :-( FS2020 Alienware Aurora R11 10th Gen Intel Core i7 10700F - Windows 11 Home 32GB Ram NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super OC 16GB - Pimax Crystal Light VR
April 27, 200620 yr I don't write freeware, and use mainly payware, but the freeware scenery that I have downloaded and now use I really do appreciate, and on occasion I have e-mailed my thanks to the author. As in life in general, when you contribute or give something, you should do it because you want to contribute, not because you're looking for a pat on the back.
April 27, 200620 yr >aww, I downloaded your westford MA Haystack scenery and>enjoyed it. I have downloaded so much scenery I would be very>busy if I sent a thank you note to every author. I think you>should just be happy that people are downloading and using>your scenery and not expect to get anything back.>I think this is the kind of attitude that makes people want to quit, you can take the time to download and use lots of scenery and add-ons yet can't take a minute to send an e-mail to thank the people who made them because you would be too busy? How long does it take to send a one line e-mail that says "Thanks for the xxx scenery, it has enhanced my flight sim experience"? It takes longer to download the add-on. I'll be the first to admit I haven't sent an e-mail for every download but I try to remember to do so. Then to tell the author, "I think you should just be happy that people are downloading and using your scenery and not expect to get anything back"? Who is anyone to tell that to someone who has labored on their own to offer something for free to the community? At the same time I can go on to any payware forum where people have no problem thanking them for the privilage of paying for their products? "Enjoy your new hobby! Make sure it's one that you don't expect feedback from."Another example of the fine attitude towards contributors. Have you contributed back to the community?BudBud
April 27, 200620 yr out of about 7000 downloaded repaints,i got 4 thank you emails,211 "you s#ck" emails, and a few good friends.i still love to tinker with textures, and i'd do it even if nobody downloaded them.i like doin' it,thus i'll continue.maybe we ought to upload anonymously,so nobody can send the "you s#ck" emails,as they've ruined a day or 2 way back when :-hahcheersJP.
April 28, 200620 yr I don't d/l a lot a scenery but I have really appreciated the ones I do. i never thought about emailing the author as I assumed they would find it a bother to get a lot of emails that weren't important questions etc. Your note gives me a totally different perspective. When i get home i am going to try to send some notes out to all those folks I've appreciated over the years.
April 28, 200620 yr "Another example of the fine attitude towards contributors. Have you contributed back to the community?"I've certainly contributed to the community, but I don't feel my users owe me thanks and I don't hold it against them if they don't have the personal bandwidth to send a thank you. I don't upload projects here looking for a pat on the back or virtual "hug"--I upload them because I like my work and maybe someone else will too.Giving my work back to the community for others to freely use makes me feel good just by going through the act of giving. The other day I mentioned one of my add-ons and pasted a link to it in a thread here. No one thanked me, but the download count, which had been static for several weeks, jumped by 40. That's 40 strangers that maybe gained more enjoyment from the sim due to something I originally did for my own pleasure. The act of "giving" was painless, since all my work was for my own goals originally. And I was able to share my work to top it off. What else do I need to be happy? -John
