[23APR18] FSW Closure: We are disappointed, but not surprised...

One should also consider that a significant percentage of FSX users bought the sim boxed from various outlets. That's not to disprove your point, but something that I think a lot of people leave out when they counter Steam stats with "they don't include direct purchases from LR."

Part of me wants to say that there's statistical significance in Steam sales as a representative sample of the larger audience, but I do hesitate with the idea that I see Steam as a slightly more casual audience...though that may affect both platforms equally, numbers-wise, and therefore not alter the overall proportionality...?

Sorry...just musings from someone who had way too much fun in stat class back at university.

That is surely a good point. I have no idea how many simmers still use their old FSX boxes. The graph below shows the usage trends of the latest year of FSX:SE and XP11 (FSX IS THE BLUE LINE, XP11 THE GREEN LINE):

EBAD0769_A47_D_4_F59_8_BDC_B06_D7510_BD1

XP11’s seems to be (slowly) growing, while FSX’s popularity is somewhat stagnated with a possible decrease trend. I would assume that the panorama of older FSX installations is similar, if not more accentuated.

Nevertheless, I agree with you that these charts do not show the whole picture and PMDG as a top-tier vendor surely have much better stats.

My goal was just to back-up my suggestion that XP11’s release about a month earlier may have contributed to FSW’s demise.

From that graph, how are you concluding, that X-Plane is growing? And FSX:SE falling? For me to see, those two curves (both of them) are pretty much stagnant.

Maybe I need my eyes checked...

You’re not alone, they look nearly identical except that X-Plane’s has more spikes than FSX does..

I wouldn‘t compare x-plane to FSX anymore... people leave FSX for many reasons. Either to x-plane11 or to P3D4, both are better than FSX (including -SE). Alone the impossibility to use addons from PMDG, FSL .... together with demanding scenery will make serious simmers switch. Ever tried to fly the 747 or A320 from Amsterdam to Copenhagen/ Seattle/ whatever in FSX? Haha!

I believe you have interpreted the graph wrongly. FSX is the blue and XP the green line. Please take another look.

Being that said,

1st. I did not say that FSX:SE is failing, but rather stagnated and with a possible trend down. This is clear if you see where the graph starts and ends and if you check the usage data on SteamCharts.

Here are the numbers for the last months (columns - avg. players / gain / % gain / peak players):

3026_A974_6_DB8_4732_BB14_91_DDD5_B606_A

The spike in the end of 2017, almost completely evened-out in the next months, happened due to a Steam Sale.

2nd. XP11’s growth is also clear. If you can not identify that on the charts, here are the numbers of the same months (columns - avg. players / gain / % gain / peak players):

35_A14_CF2_23_E8_459_A_A153_C3381_D3_A9_

3rd. If you compare the peak number of FSX users in March 2017, they are significantly smaller (about 800 less) than the same time this year. XP11’s peak usage has grown by 1000 in the same comparison.

For me, the trend is clear.

P3D/FSX remain, nevertheless, significantly bigger. I don’t get why you guys get so offended when someone states that XP11 has gained some traction recently. This was not even the goal of my posts as this is a thread discussing FSW.

How did this turn into yet another XPlane diatribe verses others diatribe?  Also, I consider it an advantage to not be using the Steam channel, and presume the Steam market is a small percentage of flight simulation market so all of the past dozen posts are remarkably irrelevant.

I'm not sure...?! It seems most topics turn towards the missing MD-11 or X-Plane

Guys,

Can we please STOP this now? Again this thread is becoming a comparison between XP and other sim. Again can you please drop it.

Thank you

Steam is all there is for FSX:SE.

This topic was opened manly to discuss the reasons why FSW failed. FSW was also only available on Steam.

If you have other data, feel free to share.

You may consider an “advantage” not to be available on Steam, but this could only relate to some sort of pleasure by being part of an “exclusive” country-club. From a business perspective, it makes no sense for a simulator not to be part of a platform used by more than 70 million users monthly. Unless, of course, if said simulator does not contain an entertainment license.
