Hello,

Lately as i've started flying VATSIM, i've been having 15-23 Fps in FSX when in the air, and 11-17 on the ground, but i've also been noticing my Fps drop down to 8 at some points. I looked into tweaking and changing my FSX:SE settings in-game, but it seems it just made it a bit worse. I'm not looking for 40 Fps, just a stable 25 if that's possible.

so, basically i'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion to what i could do to improve my general or locked FPS, whether its CFG tweaking, windows management or changing my settings. Also, i've been thinking of re-installing my FSX, is this a good idea?

Slow CPU and a really poor graphics card for FSX.  I'd say you should move all of the scenery/graphics sliders to the left and all AI set to 0%.  See if it runs better.

I set a lot of the settings all the way back, and it still didn't make a big difference! maybe 2 or 3 unstable frames.

Do you think a reinstallation of FSX would be beneficial?

Would you be able to give examples of a cheap pc that i could buy/build that gets stable 27 frames and runs smooth?

Smooth flight simming + cheap PC don't go together in the same sentence, I'm afraid. Unless the sentence is "you can't get smooth flight simming on a cheap PC."

If you cannot get a new (much better) PC at this time, maybe go with FS9 (FS2004), you can still fly on Vatsim with FS9. Not sure if you have the older PMDG 737 for FS9 or not, but there is still plenty of other aircraft available for FS9.

A couple of things....turn off lens flare and light bloom.  Turn off all aircraft shadows.  Set water to low2s.  Turn off aicrasft labels.  Try autogen max right and scenery complexity to full right.

You might want to consider not using the PMDG aircraft as your default flight.

Check my specs.  On a 2 GHz CPU and 2gb memory, my fps are low at the airport but around 20-25 in the air at cruise  altitude with my eyes shut!

No such thing as a cheap pc that will run FSX smooth and stable at 27 fps.  Although FSX will run on a CPU as slow as 2.0 GHZ, it runs much better on multiple cores that maintain 3 GHz or more.  FSX is best with multiple cores running at 4 GHz.  Although FSX relies mostly on the CPU, you still need a good graphics card and the Intel graphics sets are the worst.  FSX prefers Nvidia cards, but not the low end cards.  FSX is a 32-bit program, so it will not use more than 4 GB of RAM, but your operating system and background services also need RAM.  A 64-bit operating system is preferred and 8 GB of RAM is a minimum with a 64-bit operating system.

My old computer runs it fairly well, but my old computer is old and it will not perform well with the newer 4096x4096 high definition textures that come with most new add-on aircraft.  It also will not perform well with a lot of Autogen or ground AI traffic and I have to limit air AI traffic.  My old computer uses Windows XP (32-bit) operating system, and an Intel Q9650 Core2Quad CPU 3.0 GHz overclocked to 3.78 GHz.  4 GB of DDR2-800 RAM overclocked to 840 MHz.  EVGA Nvidia GTX-560Ti SOC 1GB graphics card.

Any thoughts on reinstalling FSX:SE completely? Would it be beneficial in most cases?

(Note that I have downloaded freeware in the past, can all the gauges and files slow my FSX?)

None of the [trusted]. gauges or files have any affect on fps.

So a reinstall would in most cases be useless?

if it’s any comfort to you , I’m running at 5.1 GHz with some top gear installed and I’m struggling with frame rate , hoping someone will help me out in fine tuning.

Ive been reading some articles, saying FSX is a 32 bit program but run on a 64 bit computer, can use 8 gbs of memory and to be safe install 16 gbs.

This 4 gbs is getting mixed up with something else, sorry can’t remember what. 

All my old stuff is FSX all I know is FSX, probably to old to change for me.

But a 64 bit Sim which can use unlimited amounts of whatever is surly to best way forward. FSX just flattens me, 19 to 26 at best just default sceanery with a good add on plane.

My cands are two. AMD HD 6900 in eyefinity.

In post its been said Nvidia are better for FSX, is this really true, and can you get the same effect as AMD eyefinity grouping of screens.

I will get Nvidia if they really are more suited and will increase my frame rate,

What is the top end Nvidia card, I seen cards at £8000 but let’s look at £800 max
