LOD_RADUIS is it more CPU or more GPU bound?

Recommended Posts

As funny as it seems...I was surprised and pleased.  Of course everyone's system is different.  The smoothness was more noticeable than the frame rate but I am happy with my system

Note that some vegetation autogen work was offloaded to the GPU and to background CPU thread. There has been no subsequent update for building autogen, which seems to me to be far harder on the CPU than trees do.

I can run autogen vegatation density at max with zero fps loss. When I put autogen building density to max I loss 10-15fps! P3D needs to offload even more to the GPU in my opinion!

With every update more will be put on the GPU..

Why can't they just offload a lot in one update?

It's not quite that simple. I wish Rob A. was still here as he could explain it a lot better than I can. At one point in the past, the simple explanation of 3D graphics was that the CPU drew the wireframe model and the GPU "painted" the wireframe. This simple paradigm became more complicated when nVidia introduced its GPU programming language CUDA. With CUDA, it is possible to utilize the GPU as sort of a super multitasking CPU. If one reads through the P3d update list and also the official forum, one finds references to using CUDA to replace specific CPU functionality.

This all sounds easy, but it takes skilled coding to make the switch and not break anything. I hope others can chime in with a better explanation.

I've wondered if there is any difference between using FXAA and/or TB in P3D or selecting it in NVI. My thinking was that setting FXAA and TB in NVI sets the GPU profile to execute those functions as opposed to executing them in the CPU. Is there a difference? I've tried it both ways and setting NVI seems to work better.

Ollie,

I tried this today with the FSL A320, WoW it works a treat no FPS lose and also no stuttering or anything.

Thank you. The sim looks so good with trees at max.

My Autogen Vegetation and Autogen Building Density are always set to Extremely Dense. Anything less is unacceptable.

Then you probably do not have True Earth Netherlands/Great Britain or a FranceVFR region like Paris Ile de France ..... 🤔

I have TrueEarth GB South and TrueEarth Netherlands installed......and the latter is running just fine with everything (apart from those daft extrusion bridges) enabled.

So the lesson we have learned so far is that watereffect is a CPU hog/stutter fest which can be disabled via terrain.cfg in programdata/ LM folder?

Also Building Autogen,LOD, shadows, special effects etc in P3D menu.

I came on a rather strange observation last day when i was testing Davids/ Nyxx FSL A320 P3D settings  in EDDF.

Yesterday after midday around 13 UTC we had some Thunderstorm in the area. Using ASP4 networked and EF and not all fine on the first flight. Stutter and fps way below my normal. Then i quickly blamed the bad weather for this.

Today i tried the exact same scenario with historically weather and everything was amazing.

Sometimes its just not P3D setting that is the reason for our FPS or stutter fest.  Sometimes i just give up and moves on but I have a suspious ,sometimes with firewalls or Maybe simconnect?  So many possibilites I am afraid.
