New MS Flight Sim shown at E3

If the game can look like the teaser and perform amazing, I’ll take an update every time it loads if I need to.

If the console would just turn itself on at midnight and update everything that wants an update, I'd have no problem with it.

It's always good to consider up and downsides to everything. For me, another downside to it being on console would be that I don't own a current-gen console and would rather not buy one. 😉

If you go through my posts in here (don't worry, I don't expect you to, that would be a huge waste of time) you'd see that I'm overall optimistic about this sim -- to the point where I said that even if the sim sucks, before it flops it might drive hardware makers to make us some flight controllers that don't either suck, or cost a car payment or three. Maybe even with FF.

That’s a good point… I don’t have a current gen console, when do they do it?

No clue. All I know is my PS3 only updated when you turned it on, and you couldn't even leave it on all the time because it would turn itself off after X time of no activity. Based on my lousy experience with it, I had no interest in trying again with a PS4.

... I do still pull out my 2600 from time to time. River Raid on a 65" widescreen is... Interesting. 😉

I honestly don’t care to silence anybody, I just don’t understand why it’s necessary to come in and rain on the parade if you are not into it.

I mean my God it’s exciting to have something new happening in this space that I think most of us thought was dead or flatlined at least for the most part.

Quite right and well said. I'm very excited indeed. I have always felt that P3D is a compromised simulator and X-Plane, at best, same problems with a different look and feel.

I've wanted to see what Microsoft would do with a simulator they made from scratch and bang up to date on recent tech leaps forward and here it darn well is going to be. I don't care who knows it but I was jumping up and down with joy after watching that promo vid.

Let's keep this discussion PG rated and cordial, please.

Thank you.

Lets say for a second that it is subscription based and cloud delivered. What if instead of 3rd party developers having to sell to the user they sold to MS and all users got the product. I would think that would be a huge win for everyone. Say a developer makes a plane and then sells it to MS at a price that would equal way more than if they tried to sell it to individuals. How great would it be to have all the A2A, PMDG, Orbx, FlyTampa, FSDT, FB etc stuff available to use for a month price?

If all of this is sold through MS, who would handle the support for said products?

The developers would probably balk at the idea since their profit margins are reduced with MS's cut.

Is MS going to train staff to handle support for each complicated product?

Can you imagine the flood of questions of a new user trying to figure out how to program an FMC?

MS would definitely have to make it worth the developers time.

I've got a PS4 and an Xbox One S. They update the system software sometimes when you launch them to play a game. The games themselves need an update every once in a while. You can usually bypass this if you don't want to update right now, though online functionality can be lost.

It's mildly annoying when the game updates are huge (like when you install an older game you just bought), but it's not like doing a clean install of P3D and having to reinstall all your planes/airports/apps etc.

By the way, there's been a lot of posts about console gamers not playing a serious sim. Besides the obvious fact that this is launching on PC first, and is an IP that is related to the PC:

- I would buy this on Xbox as well as PC. Whilst I'm usually a "sim purist" (really only fly the best payware, home cockpit builder etc), I would happily sit on the couch and fly occasionally just to make use of the home theatre setup with those splendid graphics.

- Too many people think of console gamers as a monolithic entity. Not everyone with an x-box is a kid playing COD. A good recent example is No Mans Sky, which is very light on action - and is basically a mellow space/planet sim - was amongst the top-selling console games of 2016.

- I would miss a joystick and throttle if I didn't have one on the console, but you don't need a lot of controls to fly a GA plane realistically. Gear, trim and flaps are the three essentials in addition to yoke and throttle. That's achievable with an Xbox one controller. For people who don't have gaming PCs, a console version of MSFS would at least allow them to get in the air.

- There's talk about adding mouse and keyboard support to the X-box platform. Once that happens, a Project Scarlet Xbox will be a relatively cheap way to own a high-end flightsim PC.

- It's time for flightsims to make a mainstream comeback. If a million people buy MSFS on Xbox One, there's going to be an awful lot who decide to migrate to playing it PC (for better controllers, mods etc). That would be a very good thing for the flightsim industry.

MS would get the support ticket and have the developer fix it. They would test the product first since they are buying it to make sure it worked correctly. Since the end user is not paying additional for it, they could remove it from the sim if there is an issue until the developer fixes it. The developer doesnt have to answer to hundreds or thousands of users just MS. Meanwhile with each new addition the sim becomes more valuable and weakens any competition.

I'm not talking about a working issue with a product.

Who get tasked on how to explain the operation of an FMC for example?

Are the developers going to have the usual helpful community forums to help these people with their questions?

Our local flightsim club in Moncton New Brunswick (Canada) only has a few members but we cover quite a few of the specialities from advanced P3D to X-Plane and most sticking points in between. We have decided that the new Microsoft announcement is too important to wait for the regularly scheduled chat and chew, so Monday evening it is!

Too important and exciting to remain just virtually discussing online!

If you live anywhere close, drop me a line for meet-up details!

Kind regards,

It's not like MS is going to blow up Avsim. Help will still be available here, and flightsim.com, and other places.

If they did go this route of all 3rd party developments get funneled through them and get made available for the cost of a monthly sub (I have my doubts) then if they were smart they'd include links to the major flight sim forums as places to go and learn stuff.

They could also produce more of those Rod Machado lessons they did before, including programming FMS, etc.

Can some of the x-box'ers clarify what a X-box Game Pass is and what is necessary to get one. I intend to build an incredible PC Tower to run this new sim but do I have to have an x-box  to have an x-box subscription plan?

Excuse my ignorance.

No.  But you will need Windows 10 and a internet connection (a good one, preferably hardwire Cat6 or higher).  Wireless works, but for MSFS 2020, I don’t think one’s experience would be good with wireless unless your 3 feet away from the transmitter.

Cheers Rob

Cheers Rob. I have fibre available in the road so I guess it would be time to take that and not the mobile data I've been using for years!
