Spare a thought

I'm a bit bemused that everyone seems to think that there will be a mass, no, complete, abandonment of FSX and P3D.  I know that we have more than our fair share of sheep blood coursing through our veins but we still have a fair old bit of human left....Haven't we?

While you revel in all this excitement and eager anticipation, can I ask everyone to spare a thought for those 3rd Party Developers who have served us so well over the years and who are currently feeling beleaguered as a direct consequence of Microsoft’s aggressive marketing of ASOBO’s new sim. If we have valued their contribution to our hobby then the least we can do in return by way of a thank you is to continue providing our support and encouragement to continue through what could prove to be a very difficult period ahead.

I appreciate your sentiment with 3d party developers some of which will no doubt be affected but the development changes and progress of the new simulator...

But I have to say your choice of words making this point is pretty awful. Not only are you blaming us in rejoicing a new flight simulator but also mocking Microsoft and Asobo at the same time. Final nail in the coffin is that you have already condemed the 3rd party developer of whoom the sympathy is directed.

Next time you go to friends wedding why don't you get them to sign the divorce papers at the same time just incase as we all know weddings don't last right? 😁

Clearly we must be living in different dimensions as I’m afraid I cannot recognise your interpretation.

My concerns surround statements made by those who having decided to withdraw their support for 3rd Party Development for existing platforms thereby encouraging others to do the same.

Where have I ‘mocked’ Microsoft and ASOBO? Critical, yes, but only because I sense what may have been a deliberate intention to undermine the 3rd Party Community by timing the start of their marketing campaign for best effect and without any indication when they can expect an SDK.

What 3rd Party Developer has been condemned by me? To my certain knowledge I have condemned no one. Why would I? In fact, I have been trying to encourage everyone not to turn their backs on a vulnerable industry during what could prove to be a very difficult period ahead.

Finally, everything we’ve seen and been told about the new sim is intended to excite. It appears truly extraordinary, indeed revolutionary, and to say I am astonished would be an understatement. However, life has taught me that if something appears too good to be true then there is a strong likelihood that it probably is. Hopefully, in this instance I am proved wrong but, again, I sense there will be caveats.

Oh, I should add that I have been happily married for 48 years. My hope is that others are/have been/will be as fortunate.

Regards,

Mike

Encouraging new simmers to spend thousands of dollar on a dead sim is pretty evil

They aren't dead yet, and quite likely won't be for another five or so years. Shoot, there's a huge and thriving community still using...

FS98 for heaven's sake man!

Hi Lukas,

For goodness sake, get real! Where have I encouraged anyone to spend thousands of dollars on a ‘dead sim’? As Bill  said, P3D has still got a lot of life in it. Describing P3D as ‘dead’ suggests more about your experience with a sim that has been realising it’s true potential over many years of dedicated development and enthusiastic 3rd Party Support.

Your forceful comments only serve to underline just how influential those advance marketing MSFS2020 videos and images have been on you.

Regards,

Mike

Um, OK. So they didn't, you know, set a target date for launch, and then work backward through a series of critical dependencies to build development a timeline, then identify critical thresholds in that timeline, then align the development timeline with the business plan, then build a marketing plan to support it, then create a marketing campaign with multiple elements pegged to calendar dates including trade shows and conferences, then set a schedule for that marketing campaign including multimedia production and media relations and community outreach, synchronizing that with the development schedule and the sales plan and the revenue goals... no, they didn't do any of that.  Instead they sat in a room and said, "What's our real goal here?  It's to undermine the 3rd Party Community! Because that benefits us by... um... well, um, I don't know how it benefits us, but it seems really really important, so let's time our marketing campaign for best effect so that we can do that, and never mind about everything we have to do to develop and sell the product, those 3rd Party Developers are the problem. Let's go get them!"

It's clear you feel really strongly about this, and it's fine to defend the developers if you want to, but isn't this getting a little far into conspiracy theory?

Hi Alan,

Maybe you are right, who knows? I certainly don’t nor do the 3PDs. All we are seeing thus far are the effects of MS/ASOBO’s marketing decisions.

My hope is that at some point soon we will receive some official clarification so that we can finally draw a line under this debate. Is that really too much to ask or expect?

Well, there's something we can agree on!

I suspect we will, and probably sooner rather than later.  If they are, in fact, talking with 60 developers (which is what they said in the FS Elite interview), that's bound to take some time.  But it's in everybody's interests to get things clarified.  It'd be good for our collective sanity, too.

Here's hoping we get some clarity - maybe between now and the end of the year?

At FS2Crew, we've noticed no real significant difference in sales activity.  People like "new", and addons give them that feeling.

People are still going to be using P3D and FSX for another solid 12 months probably until FS2020 is released, and then there will be another wait period while developers deal with the release version of FS2020.  How long that will be who knows...

FS2020 will no doubt nuke P3D.  X-Plane I suspect will be relegated back to what it originally was... a niche app for people who like fiddling with aerodynamics.  So say a prayer for the X-Plane missionaries on these forums...

All in all though, we're very happy about FS2020.  What we always wanted most is a single sim to rule them all, rather than dealing with a fractured marketplace.  And it looks like FS2020 will give us that.

Hmm well I guess the DCS developers and operators I know that are planning to move to MSFS is just a dream I cooked up...

It will be a natural for military ops and you have no idea if the dcs flight dynamics exceed MSFS. I have DCS and it's flight dynamics are good but not what you're professing them to be.

DCS will go by the wayside along with all the other sims. It's done.

I agree.  As long as the SDK is flexible enough I don't see how any sims can complete.

I hope the SDK allows for simulation of trains and boats also.

I think add-on aircraft and airport makers will see a new golden age dawn with the release of FS2020.  The smart ones will have already realised this and committed to FS2020 by now.  Oh, case in point, PMDG.

XP was always a side show, always will be.... Blame the eccentric Austin for that, though I'm sure he's quite happy (and wealthy), so he doesn't care anyway 🙂

I guess we disagree. I've been flight simming for 20+ years.

With the announcement of FS2020 for me P3D is dead.

Why? Because LM never fixed the ridiculously over-scaled autogen houses and trees, nor were Orbx able to address this issue in their add on scenery.

Now with FS2020 we actually have a sim that represents the world at correct scale. Hooray!

Too bad LM never bothered to address this issue from day one.

Yes, it's all "smoke and mirrors" and a big conspiracy.  Asobo's real agenda is to use our PC's to mine cryptocurrency. And climate change is not real either 🙂
