Over a 1000 family's in Italy don't see it as a hoax or a joke they have lost someone.

and despite medical help, respiratory equipment, people die.
My wife and me have forbidden our grandpa and grandma to leave
the house and do their own shopping. They're in their +70s.
Seeing everything as a Hoax makes no sense, what do we have to
lose if nothing bad happens?

I have survived all these viruses and never gotten sick. This entire fiasco is perpetrated by the media. People need to calm down.

Good for you. BUT

To survive: to continue to live or exist, especially after coming close to dying or being destroyed or after being in a difficult or threatening situation.

There is a difference between surviving and just living your normal life.

Right, come spend a couple weeks in Italy, see how it's just the media.

Oh wait, you can't because the situation is severe enough the government declared nationwide quarantine. It's just the media, right?

People are about to find out for themselves whether this Pandemic is a hoax or not.

Thousands of people died in China, Iran, Europe (Italy, France, etc.) and the US of watching too much television.  The CDC in Atlanta, Institut Pasteur in Paris and all their equivalents in the world  should know better.

In all of Germany? So I guess it won‘t be long till the same happens here in Switzerland.

All the school system, from KG to universities, is closed in France until further notice.

I knew about France but not about Germany. So far in Switzerland only one „state“ closed its schools. There‘ll be a government update in 15 mins. I guess that means shutdown of all schools here as well.

Did you let your grandparents leave their house during last years flu season? Influenza killed 57,000+ Americans last year.

There is little scientific or clinical logic to closing down schools too early in this situation. But it helps to alleviate the media induced sense of panic among the masses.

In Italy, when the lock down of towns in Lombardy was leaked, via the media, the day before it was to start, there were large numbers of people observed loading suitcases into cars, to travel to other parts of Italy, helping to spread the virus.

Regarding the death rate, the media plays down the fact that most of those who died had significant existing health problems. There are a few worrying exceptions, but many would have had a poor prognosis without contracting the virus. Of course it's sad when anyone dies, but it's one of the realities of life that we won't live forever. If the total daily death rate from all causes, for any day this year, in any of the affected countries, is compared with the same day last year, the difference would be statistically insignificant.

Among the elderly, which includes me, we are much more likely to die from cancer than from Corona virus. In fact, prior to having surgery for bowel cancer several years ago, the consent forms advised me that the risk of death during the procedure was between 2%  and 5%, which I was happy to accept as a better than 95% chance of survival. With Corona virus the real concern is the economic impact of any action, which could last much longer than the peak of the virus.

I do not want to enter into an endless discussion but the answer is crystal clear in my mind. Every year, my wife and I (we are in the early seventies) get a vaccine shot against the flu. There is no vaccine against the new beastie. Besides, there is no treatment against it either. Hospitals, doctors mitigate the symptoms only (Respiratory difficulties, fever etc.)

Common sense dictates to be careful.
