Donations to Avsim

I am a big believer in small donations being made by large numbers of users. With only half of the 240000+ users donating $1 each....you see what I mean.

There are a lot of high volume comment posters on Avsim that have never donated any amount. This, to me, is unconscionable.

Right on man, couldn't agree more. It only takes a decent proportion of the members to throw a couple of quid or so at the fund every so often and it'll be there in no time. I think Avsim should make more of a focus on trying to attract smaller sums from a much larger amount of people, and as such, the suggested donation amount should be as low as it possibly can be, so that the person donating can decide to up it if they want, and would be inclined to do so more often.

There is no denying that large donations are generous, and I'm in no way trying to diminish or discourage those who can afford to make them from doing so, but by the same token, I find it very hard to believe that there are people on here on a regular basis who can't afford to throw even a couple of quid at the fund. I look on it as kind of a voluntary subscription for a website I get a lot of fun out of, and therefore don't begrudge paying a bit for.

That is really true, however look at how Wikipedia struggles each year even with the same approach, and they have many, many, MANY *orders of magnitude* the amount of users that this site has.  Human nature 🤷‍♂️

And I'm sure we all appreciate that Fr. Bill. There is always more than one way to contribute..........Doug

Fully concur, especially in Bill's case.

Why would I donate to a website that generates ad revenue?

How many of Avsim's receipts have you personally seen?

True, but then again I would not be wailing and moaning if Wikipedia disappeared, I don't mind it, but I'm not what you'd call passionate about it to the point of really caring about it one way or the other, whereas if Avsim went, I'd not be happy. So I literally put my money where my mouth is in terms of funding what I care about, and anyone who is passionate about the Wiki Foundation can do the same for their project of choice.

There are other things I throw money at, such as the RNLI and the Guide Dogs for the Blind and the PDSA, Help for Heroes etc. That's my choice, others can make theirs, but if they are here regularly, Avsim should be one they should consider offering some support too.

As Joni Mitchell famously wrote in Big Yellow Taxi: 'Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone?'.

also find the suggested amounts a bit steep. With 1,300,000 members

AVSIM has over a million membership? Think it is over 300000 and not 300000 are active anymore.  Think we have about 1000 who are active. Still the site has over 2 million hits each month and everyone is hitting an advertisement.  We generate a lot from this revenue but nothing crazy wild. The CEO, AVSIM Tech and I are looking at options to beef up the donations.  Stay tuned.

Best regards,

Jim

Have you not noticed that on most days at anyone time over 4 times as many Guest are viewing the forums, if some became active members Avsim could more than double it`s active members.

Is it that some are put off becoming members when they see post like why are you using that (word not allowed) you should be using X,Y,Z,

I was unaware that it was time to donate.  Over at SOH, they place a banner at the top of each forum, indicating they are actively seeking donations.  If it was not for this one thread here at Avsim, I would never have known.  Just saying a little advertising goes a long way.

I actually have been following the forums for many years, and am still confused about what you are trying to say.

To avoid actual flightsim companies or products, the OP is choosing to use alternatives. To hopefully clear up any further confusion, consider it this way:

Why are you using 'Colgate' tooth paste? 'Crest' toothpaste is much better!

Thank you Robin for starting this thread. I did so in a reply in another thread/forum (I don't remember specifically where now.), but it certainly doesn't hurt to have it in its own thread.

Hmm ok, you may not be passionate about it, but are you gonna tell me you never used it..? 🙂

Once or twice yes, however, the service they offer is by their own stated goal, free.
