Microsoft's answer to ActiveSky

Skip ahead to the 1:27 mark (you'll see what I mean by transparency) ... MSFS clouds look like thick cotton balls:

If some like the MSFS clouds, then great, but I'm hoping for something more like this and currently TrueSKY looks more like these.  I think point being "choice", "flexibility", and supporting SDK.

Cheers, Rob.

I've never liked weather addons - the UI's are always too clunky and the cloud renditions never impressed and there were always performance issues  Better to have a native /global weather system in the sim for reasons of usability, accuracy, flight realism and performance. I'm confident the team and testers will iron out cloud weirdness before the release.

Cheers

See...... For me, I'm not demanding (nor expecting) perfection.

All weather renditions have their strengths and weaknesses, their OMG moments under just the right circumstances, and their that-looks-like-a-cotton-ball moments.

For me, its the overall impression for the largest number of conditions that's going to draw me in.

Considering all the groundbreaking tech underpinning this sim, I really can't see some small, low-budget team somewhere offering more than token opposition in this genre.

Perfect? Nope, but I'm happy.

I guess I am not a "true believer"... but I am prepared to be impressed... 🙂

Some of us have lived through the MS FSX, FSXI, Flight roller coaster... and need to see something that MS does not drop when it does not live up to expectations, or exceeds its budget projections..

Silliest thing i've ever read.

Yeah awesome how two of the biggest trolls here are avsim mods.  Avsim at it's finest. 🎆

Hopefully with MSFS2020's much better weather system!  On with the future and out with the old.

I replied to what I saw. It always helps to pause and consider replies that could annoy.

I agree that the sim itself probably won’t have a subscription but to give away AIRAC data especially for no charge just doesn’t ring true when Navigraph has to pay for it. How are they going to react if Microsoft get the same data gratis?

As for the weather these are things that could be considered extras separate from the core sim and therefore incur a separate charge. Note the word “could”, not “will”. Just an opinion.

They does present live weather as an integral parts of MSFS from the begining. Not as additional service. So I don't understand, why someone are still thinkink, that we will get an incomplete game without monthly subscription 😉 In FSX was live weather too and we didn't have to pay more money for this online data.

And you shouldn't be 😉 !  True believers and haters are a scourge and, as a rule, go hand in hand to sour  a thread. Some examples of both here.

I understand your doubt considering MS history and, let me add, also the Aces Studio history that we still find somewhat in the P3D team and their disinterest for the weather.

Some like me do an educated guess. Partnering with a well-known, highly technological company is  not the same than recruiting a coder and assiging him or her a difficult task within limits (time, budget). Of course, nothing is sure.  Asobo has most certainly a deadline and will have to release, even an imperfect product.

But if they pull the rabbit out of the hat, the sim will have a new injector and a new engine to manipulate big data. That was the topic of MB video (not the relative beauty of the clouds which is another topic and a lame try at misdirection in this thread). I don't see much scope here for an Active Sky except if MB is a total failure !

I bet Meteoblu's number of app downloads and website visits just skyrocketed after the video was released. I did, for the first time as I hadn't heard of them before, and was pleasantly surprised by the comprehensiveness of their data.

I did, hence my video I posted earlier of an actual flight thru and around clouds.

Even from the pictures you've posted, the MSFS clouds are far to "solid" and the shading is off (too dark for the given sun position).

Everyone is going to have their own "desire" and/or "perspective" on how they want clouds/weather to look, which is great ... to each his/her own (the reason Flight Simulators have managed to exist over the decades).  But there currently is NO WAY to provide options (at least none that I can find) ... it's take it or take it.  I'd like to see some options per XP and P3D SDK.  I hope MS have a re-think of cloud depiction ... perhaps they are concerned about the performance implications but leaving it proprietary seems too constrictive.

Currently that's not even an option.  And I'll disagree, TrueSKY has an SDK anyone can buy at very affordable price ($100).  It's an extremely powerful SDK.  I think A LOT of people do care about weather and how it's managed/presented ... "good enough" just closes the door, I don't think that works in the world of Flight Simulation ... It hasn't in the past, we always push for more and more realism.

Cheers, Rob.

This is just silly. No one is going to buy an add-on for $100 for a simulator that will likely cost $60 and already has an incredible accuracy and visuals. You are just scared that no one will buy your add-ons anymore. Just accept that someone is finally making a next-gen flight sim that both looks amazing and is very realistic. The days of spending hundreds of dollars on miniscule details are over. I checked your company's website, no one will pay $15 for a single airport anymore when there is an SDK that allows users to modify airports as they wish. If Microsoft provides some kind of community review process for custom/edited airports, and then include them in the sim, the days of airport add-ons are over (except maybe really highly detailed airports). People love to work for free if it makes it in the sim, Alpha Testers are already spending many hours testing and reporting bugs for free.

Are you serious? Do you really think users are going to make their own airports instead of buy them? People want to fly in the sim, not develop their own airports.

Ever heard of X-Plane's scenery gateway... this didn't end payware airports in X-Plane

A promo trailer on Navblue (an Airbus company btw) is scheduled for next Thursday that may shed some light on the issue.

The issue is not to know whether MS will get the data free but if we, the users, will get them free, isn’t it ? MS has many way to compensate for the cost besides asking for a subscription which cannot be totally excluded though.

Basically there is a two-tier market. I would be very happy to have access to all the 2020 data at release including the charts but I do not care much to have several updates a year.  Some fellow simmers are keener to have the last update. Two markets, two pricings ?
