I had the same thing happen yesterday as I went to complete my pre-order installation. After pressing F5 to refresh my screen, I as able to successfully complete the process.

I have now linked the "Launcher" to my Task Bar so that on midnight of the 17th I just need to click one taskbar icon to get started. 😄

One more thing you might consider, is to move the "app" off the C drive to its own SSD prior to the "Big Bang"...

App Settings \ Move  in Windows.

I'm testing the Alpha and this is definitely not MS Flight 2.0 or anything like it. And surely not just because of issues with the shopping cart...

I think it's been clear from the release announcement that this was not Ms Flight 2.0, though I know there was a lot of bitterness towards MS here about a year back due to that less-than-successful game. Asobo have always given every indication that they are trying to keep a typical Avsimmer happy, whilst also appealing to a broader audience. Flight was different, as the dev team had a pretty negative attitude towards the traditional flight sim fans.

The shopping cart is a minor frustration, but I'm confident that Asobo were not in charge or programming it!

I am sure you are right.. but at some point we will be interacting with Microsoft XBox / Store / Apps / Support again, just like we did with Flight.

I hope that Microsoft learned a lesson last time through..  XBox Games still has a "culture" all their own, it would appear... But I am prepared to be impressed. 😉

Wait until someone triggers a hacking service targeting your XBL account name and gets your account, and all your purchases, lost forever... I've experienced this but it goes to deaf ears...

Look inside C:\Program Files\WindowsApps
You would need to give Yourself permission to open and browse that folder.
(Not easy though)

Does it mean we have to have Microsoft account on Windows 10 to install/run MSFS? I always use standard local user account instead of logging to Windows via Microsoft account.

It sure isn't easy.  I gave up on it.  However, I found the program under my Start Menu...under Microsoft Store.  The purchase is located there.  Click on it and you'll see the Play command.  It says it isn't ready, but you can pin it to your taskbar if you wish.

You need a Microsoft account to use the Microsoft Store, which is where MSFS will be distributed. As far as I'm aware, you can still log into the Microsoft Store with a Microsoft account, regardless of whether or not you have a local user on Windows.

OK.. here is the critical piece... I could not download the package because "no device was linked to my MS account".

The support pages told me that I have to log into my PC via my MS account, which I have never done (ever).  So I complied and was able to download the preorder package.

No one at XBox Support can tell me whether I can now go back to logging into my PC the old way or not.  They seem baffled that I would even consider it 😉

I didn't have that problem and was able to download while keeping a local account. However this article should be helpful for converting your PC back to a local account: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-switch-local-account-microsoft-account-windows-10

MS are doing nothing different than Apple in that they do not allow anything on the system that has not gone through them, so a MS account will be needed and i suspect like P3D and a lot of software now days it will phone home to check authentication to stay active.
