FS20 installation location

Featured Replies

The game is provided via the Windows Store - i dont know a possibility to install the games from the store into separate folders.

How is it possible to install the Flight Simulator on its dedicated SSD then?

Am i missing a function of the Windows store?

As far as i know i can only change installation path for ALL apps via System Control Panel, and only the drive, never a path.

Here is what I did.

1. Download Flight Simulator to its default location. It is not a very big file.. some 200 MB.

2. Go to Windows Settings / Apps and find the Flight Simulator "app"

3. Click on it and select Move

4. Point to your SSD and execute.

The App will be moved to its new location.

Will this be the same on release? It might install/download the entire game to the c: drive before you can move it.

Many thanks Bert,

I was somewhat apprehensive whilst downloading the app as it appeared it wouldn't provide a choice of location installation and forced the location instead - now that I know I can carry out the action you prescribe I feel a whole lot better.

I have a question before I move the app to a more suitable location - since we can't move the Microsoft Flight Simulator SimConnect Client - will that be a problem if it's not located in the same new directory where we moved the actual sim app?

I have absolutely no idea... where is it installed?

MS needs to offer up an Installation Guide!

For the preorder, this appears to work.. Who knows what happens after.. although you can preselect a drive that all apps should go to.. Maybe that is the way..

Simconnect is a DLL installed in C:\Windows\WinSxS, which is a special system folder specifically designed to hold multiple versions of the same DLL.

Any program on the computer can automatically find and link to DLLs contained WinSxS, so nothing needs to be moved

Additional option if you want to download without moving it afterwards:

Start menu, Settings, System, Storage, "Change where new content is saved", "New apps will save to:", choose a drive. No more default C drive worries for the launcher.

Correct, and that was mentioned in the original post.. 😉

If the release version of FS20 is the same as the Alpha, then you will be given a option to store them main sim files at another location when you install it.

I currently have my Alpha FS20 installed on a separate SSD. its currently 89.9 Gig. While the install file from the Microsoft store is stored at its default location. its currently 800mb.

My download installed on my SSD drive ok but the file size is only 20.7 MB, not 200. Is it supposed to be 200?

Whoops. That's what I get for not only skimming but for also trying to multitask!

Part still goes on the C drive.  The actual FS app folder is currently 20 MB on my system also.
