Missions in MSFS confirmed

Featured Replies

I loved the missions in FSX. Good for a little variety. Glad to see something like that for the new sim.

I think that missions are great for new and casual users, but it's probably my.least wanted feature. Including missions makes more sense if aircraft have weapons that cause damage.

Casual flyer here. I am hoping this has something extra such as missions and lessons like they had in FSX. Those are what kept me interested rather than just flying around. I will probly wait till after launch and see what they have available.

I think missions could have value if they send you to places you hadn't thought of flying to, allowing Asobo to show off some of their handiwork.

OS:     Win11 Home; Mobo: Asus TUF Gaming Z690-Plus WiFi D4; CPU: Intel i5-12400 (Alder Lake) 4.4 GHz
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 64Gb (4x16GB) 3600 MHz; GPU:  MSI Radeon RX 5700XT [8GB]
SSD:  Corsair Force MP510 (for OS);  2x 1TB & 1x 2TB Sabrent Rocket Nvme PCIe 4.0 (one for sim, two for addons)
HDD:  Seagate 3TB (Data); Seagate 1TB (Programs), ASUS TUF Gaming VG32VQ1B Curved 31.5" monitor, 1440p, 38Mbs ethernet

Fulcrum One Yoke, Honeycomb Bravo throttle, Thrustmaster Airbus TCA sidestick & throttle, Logitech Pro pedals, Xbox wireless gamepad (1st gen)

I think a built in virtual airline and/or passenger carrying functionality would be super cool. Something like FSPassengers.

I don't really care about single individual missions much, but a career mode similar to Flight Sim Economy built into the game?  THAT would interest me greatly.

Yes, same here. A career mode, a virtual airline company or a virtual GA contract to fly ppl around. Would give the flying some additional immersion factor.

Yup. Invaluable for me in terms of discovering new places to fly.

I wonder which genre has a bigger following, and a bigger commercial potential.

Is it civil flight? Or Combat Simulation??

I think it will be very hard for MSASOBO to continually ignore the future potential of a combat simulator, which has an entire world to cause mayhem in.

That's where I see "missions" REALLY gaining traction.

I don't see the civil side disappearing anytime soon.  But I do see the capability, interest and excitement in this genre eventually plateauing.

And then...???

It seems to me that Combat Simulation has the far greater allure AND commercial and games potential.  Especially now that there - literally - is a whole new world to operate in (unlike the limited campaign geographies of DCS and BMS).

I think Asobo is already preparing for that possible outcome.

But what do I know.

What do you think?

Did you ever fly subLogic's Flight Assignment: ATP?  It contained 96 pre-structured Career Flights and many of us flew all of them.  ATC guidance and post flight evaluation/scoring.  Those Career Flights gave birth to the the world of Virtual Airlines.

I remember that sim fondly. It even came with a fat paperback manual full of advice and in the back were all the approach plates, SIDs & STARS. What was amazing about that sim was that it reproduced the heavy feel of a passenger airliner so well. Proof that eye-candy graphics are not everything. In fact for me I have never yet felt an airliner feel like they did in that old sim.

I believe I'm very far from the average member of this community, but I know I'm quite the average gamer (and thus, potential buyer/user of MSFS 2020). IMHO, without something like Air Hauler (the addon for FSX/P3D/XP) the potential user base will just "test" the game via the game pass, use it for a couple of hours, and after the bing maps/google earth novelty wears off just uninstall it. people will sure play it if you make it more similar to Euro Truck Simulator, i.e., give it a "metagame" to enjoy.

I know it make no difference to most of you guys, but with the simple addition of the metagame I believe the userbase will grow a lot and this benefits everyone. This means more support from the devs, more addons (due to the prospect of more potential addon buyers), more people populating online servers, and more potential casual players that can be converted to hardcore flight sim players. So, even if you don't play any kind of missions, you're going to benefit from it.

Some users are happy to make point-to-point flights, but the addition of missions to FSX was great and gave a lot to do to those who would tire of a flight sim.  Ideally, the new MFS will have tons and tons of missions to entertain .

The only thing that I disliked with Flight missions was, that the longest one I flew was 269nm, you never had to stop and refuel along the way.

IMO, without an actual mission "editor"...missions would end up being a mixed bag for many (assuming we're not talking about a career mode here). What happens is that the mission is typically tied to a specific aircraft, W&B, route and weather variables so that it functions correctly and this means that most of us would only fly the missions that suited our tastes in either aircraft and/or geography. Therefore, pre-made missions would end up being hit & miss for most.

Personally, I'd prefer to see a mission editor and/or some sort of career mode based upon a choice of our preferred discipline (part 121 airlines, or part 135 or 91 charters, etc.). I just feel it would provide alot more content and replay-ability.

Some of my favorite addons were FSCargo, FSEconomy, Virtual Airlines, Air Hauler and FSPassengers. All gave a reason to fly. We will see what becomes but yes having a reason to fly make the sim more desiring to use for the long term. I feel they are going to want to have something "gamey" for the Xbox version and I'm okay with that because they have proven that they want to make a platform for the hardcore simmers as well.

There are already missions in the new sim. I thought this was common knowledge?

Not many. So being able to buy packs or make them yourself is a very good, if not essential, feature !
