August 7, 20205 yr The recent posts by Alan and Ray about Rolls-Royce engines reminded me of an event from long ago.. I was about to graduate from college and was interviewing for a job at United Airlines as a purchasing agent. There was a choice of two departments...air-frames and engines. I was told that there would be quite a bit of travel in either case as my office would be in San Francisco. Seattle for air-frames and Coventry for engines. Of course, I opted for engines. Then came the question that caused me to pass on both jobs. The guy doing the interview asked..."since the job requires travel to a foreign country I need to be sure you can speak the language" Plonk.............Doug PS: Although, having visited England several times, I'm still a bit unsure just how fluent I was/am. 😄 Intel 10700K @ 5.1Ghz, Asus Hero Maximus motherboard, Noctua NH-U12A cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 32GB 3200 MHz RAM, RTX 2060 Super GPU, Cooler Master HAF 932 Tower, Thermaltake 1000W Toughpower PSU, Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit, 100TB of disk storage. Now , my question is.......I saw a post yesterday by a British member who used aeroplane and airport in the same sentence. Wouldn't it be aeroport? 🤔 Charlie AronAVSIM Board of Directors-ADMIN/Moderator-RegistrarJust going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. August 7, 20205 yr I can speak latin like a native. 🤣 I just think it's funny to use archaic English stuff to annoy people. So I deliberately use whilst instead of while, call buses omnibuses, trucks are lorries, pantechnicons, or juggernauts. Referring to trousers with the singular 'trouser' is always a fun one in shops. August 7, 20205 yr Administrators You also go to the loo, I bet! Strange how us colonials say "go to the bathroom/restroom". I ain't goin' in there to take a bath or to rest!! Some houses have what is know as a 1/4 bathroom. Basically a sink and a terlit. As a Canadian, I still find it odd that my American brethren and sistren refer to the "bathroom" as "restroom." Living near the border, about 15 kilometres/9 miles away, I regularly (at least, I did before COVID-19) drive to the States, to Bellingham or Seattle for example. Each time that I've asked for the bathroom in restaurants, I've been met with blank stares and a pregnant pause ... at least until I rephrase my question with "restroom." 🙂 Joel Murray @ CYVR (actually, somewhere about halfway between CYNJ and CZBB)
August 7, 20205 yr Administrators @JRMurray Definitely no "bathrooms" in any business establishment in the states. All signs point to "Restrooms". I usually go outside and find a curb or tree and then go back inside to the restroom to rest. Gotta rest after being chased by the angry mobs! 🤪 Charlie AronAVSIM Board of Directors-ADMIN/Moderator-RegistrarJust going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer.
