Those Clouds- Tweaks

+1! Thats exactly how it is in real life. Even those "sharp" CB clouds shown in the photographs a couple of posts ago will look very blurry once you get close. That's how it is in reality. It seems to me, that too much of the flightsim community has gotten used to those crisp billboards from the past that can look nice from distance but become completely unrealistic when getting close. Simmers, please go outside, get in a real aircraft and fly close to some real clouds and then come back to your PC and judge again. The MSFS ones are way closer to reality than anything else we have seen so far in any sim with any add on. That being said: While I even still see some room for improvements, to me complaining about unrealistic clouds in MSFS is somewhat absurd. Because they are one of the major breakthroughs that come with this sim, and a big leap forward (beside cirrus 🤐).

Well said !  How can anyone watch this two minute video and not feel PURE LOVE for these clouds (eg look at 0:23 to 0:30 and 2:13 to 2:25).  Thank you Microsoft/Asobo 😍

So, the best clouds in flight simulation, or any game I'm aware of, are not good enough eh?  I suppose there is always room for improvment, but flipping heck, simmers are hard to please 🤪

Needless to say if the Clouds ever get some improvement and the Trees as well (don't forget the trees!) then the same people will be finding something else to pick holes in, it's the simmers way to demand perfection...and then some!

Jeez!  All I said was that the clouds look a little low res.  I have no problems with the transparency when you get close.  Yes, I've flown in real clouds. Yes, I look at real clouds from the ground daily.  Google "time lapse clouds."

For what it's worth, at one point the testers on the Alpha forum were asking if the clouds resolution had been lowered since the earliest builds. I don't know, I wasn't there at the time, and it's possible if they were tuning performance.  If they were, I don't know if they were reverted.  We've been through lots of changes as things were added or removed.    I haven't looked to see if the clouds in the earliest videos or screen shots are much different.  At one point we saw in a video a slider that changed the fuzziness of the clouds.  I don't know if it's still there.  Maybe I should look, but I won't be able to tell you.

As for finding other things to pick holes in, I won't have to.  There are plenty on this forum that will.

Personally, I find the experience of flying in MSFS to be absolutely incredible.  It's even better if I haven't been reading forums lately. 🙂

And now, join me in the chorus:
It's not perfect.  It's not finished.  It's still just a flight sim.

You'll see on the 18th.  Or the 19th.  Or whenever. 😄

I'm not really sure what you mean, that they're talking about REAL clouds and not in the SIM?! I very well aware of that. The pictures I sent, WAS from real life... Oh, well...

@Chock
You don't need to tell me, please. Of course, the clouds would look different, when you're closing in on them. At a distance, some cloud-types, can appear shard-edged, but of course when you're close to them, they look different. It's water vapor - of course. I don't know why need to state the obvious?!

You guys are just amazing - really. You keep finding faults and nitpicking...

Yes, I know!  I posted that the third pic was what I normally saw outside.  Usually a bit less dramatic though.

I guess everyone focuses on different things.  I look at the small details.

Sim cloud preferences are almost religious in nature, and arguments break out reminiscent of predestinationists vs foreordinationists. In the end, we're all talking about the same thing.

I agree on the resolution thing. But my main complaint about clouds ist their color. As i did say in another post in my opinion there is waaaay to much grey colour in the sky. Take a look at the following video at around 01:48:00 as he is descending into the clouds.

Those are high altitude clouds and they are colored like a storm is coming up. The sun is shining right onto them and still big parts appear grey and dark. Way too much IMHO. From that colour i'd expect large amounts of water in and under those clouds.

You are correct : the clouds certainly look low resolution.

Just like the TrueSky clouds in P3Dv5, even at a high resolution.

I’ve heard that in the updated version that was removed, can anyone confirm?

When i see the footage (2019 pre-alpha and the preview build videos from july) it still takes my breath away.. (as i stated earlier.. i sometimes stare at the real sky in wonderment of its beauty.. so i have probably an unhealthy love of clouds).. I have never had that feeling looking at the sky of a  current sim (referring to twitch and youtube) ... And once I stop comparing it to what we currently have, after a while, maybe i'll take it for granted enough to see the flaws...

but yeah...  i understand, nothing is perfect.. except Margot Robbie

No one knows.  We literally have no idea what the release version will be like.  Your best option is to check out the various videos and see if it's in them.

This is one of those things were you can nit-pick it to death and find shots of a certain cloud that doesn't look like MSFS. I'm not discounting that. But like someone else said, there are far more advantages to the new cloud tech over the old stuff, even if every now and then you find something you like better in P3D.

Let's hope that's not the case. Light pollution bouncing off the clouds is actually pretty useful in nighttime flying and it is part of the whole urban atmosphere.
