August 19, 20205 yr I have a gsync monitor, and Nvidia 2080ti’s. Is it necessary to have vsync on or off in the sim? tried to google, but nothing really helps me decide. I saw no difference on or off to be honest. August 19, 20205 yr Commercial Member VSync, put very simply, limits the output frequency of simulator frames to your monitor refresh frequency. So if your monitor refresh frequency is 120Hz (cycles per second) and your simulator output frequency is around 150fps (frames per second), then your output will be limited to 120fps. However, if your output frequency is around 40fps, then you will not see any difference with VSync switched on or off. Steve Waite: Engineer at codelegend.com
August 19, 20205 yr I dont have a gsync monitor, but same question, should I lock my frames to my monitor or let it free run. Not seeing any appreciable differences (testing, performance) either way. I will leave it turned off then since there is no chance we will exceed 120 hz / 120 fps in all likelihood as my settings are all ultra. August 19, 20205 yr Commercial Member Something to check is the monitor refresh frequency, which may or may not be in the instruction notes for the monitor. For example, with the Nvidia Control Panel (NCP), we can check the monitor refresh frequency Right click the desktop and in the popup menu choose NCP, then choose "Display, Change Resolution". In the "2. Choose the resolution" section, look for the Refresh Rate showing. Some monitors might be around 60, others 120 or more. Frames are not locked as such. They are limited to frames that will be completely transferred for the next refresh cycle. Frames arriving early are lost. It's best to choose the highest frequency so there is least time to wait before the next cycle, after the most recent frame is transferred. Steve Waite: Engineer at codelegend.com
August 20, 20205 yr MSFS does not appear to have an UNLIMITED frame rate option, does it? I left my display set at 30Hz refresh, vsync on, but in-sim set at 60, and seem to have very smooth performance. I guess I could try 60Hz refresh and see how it runs. August 20, 20205 yr I have a 30Hz monitor (55" TV) and have VSync on and frame rate limiter set to 60. Nice and smooth locked at 30 fps due to the VSync. To be honest, I would never ever go back to a fixed refresh rate monitor, G-Sync blows them away! Specially in this new sim!
August 20, 20205 yr Commercial Member If a limiter was set to 29fps, with 30Hz VSync, then there would be less chance the GPU outputs frames that are ignored, and also 1 / 30 x 100 = 3.33% which reduces load on the system by 3%. Steve Waite: Engineer at codelegend.com

So why is it that 60FPS limit with 30HZ VsynC On is MUCH smoother/better in FS2020 than 30fps limit ? Thanks Michael Moe Edited August 20, 20205 yr by Michael Moe Michael Moe
