Devil's advocate here: It's 02:30 in the morning in the UK and I'm flying cargo into Stansted are there any VATSIM people covering the UK at that time? What I'm really asking: Is there enough VATSIM people to cover destinations all over the globe specific to the times and destinations of the flight simmers? I've never used VATSIM, nor even used multiplayer in FSX:SE. (Don't have the new sim..) I believe that VATSIM appears to be very good and strives to be as close to real ATC as they can be, but the coverage and times of regions is limited - totally understandable, don't get me wrong. August 22, 20205 yr It has SID and STAR, yes, but how its implemented is just plain ridiculous. I do NOT want to select the SID and STAR already in the flight planning window and then it will stick even if the weather changes. I want to hear ATC telling me upon clearance what SID I have to use and then adjust the fp accordingly. How do you guys overcome this? Use simbrief and let simbrief tell you which SID according to real weather? Does this work? Any other suggestion? August 24, 20205 yr Seems like ATC has problem with sequencing . I tried to land in KPDX with a lot of traffic . Every time I get cleared to land, later, about half mile out I got called to go around. It happened three times in a raw after which I canceled IFR and ask for visual approach and quickly squeezed myself between traffic . also AI takes forever to get off runway . In real life they would scolded by ATC 🙂 Life time flight sim enthusiast, current airplane owner 172P (past C182F). August 24, 20205 yr One thing I miss is the actual recorded voices used for ATC. Albeit a lot of work to record the phrases, it sounds much better with actual voices like you have in FSX/P3D. Even if hearing the same default 5-6 voices you had in FSX got old, it still sounded more realistic than text-to-speech. Behavior and realistic phraseology are another matter. What's all this "Land at runway tree, wind thirty-tree knots" nonsense? Is it to wind up a certain Avsim member?😁 No, actually it's correct and according to the book as it should be. Three is pronounced "tree", four stretches into "fower", five is "fife" or sometimes "fivah" and nine is "ninah". This pronunciation makes it crystal clear which aircraft, runway or taxiway is being referred to in communications between pilots and air traffic controllers. Not saying i like it, but it seems hard to critisise ATC for not being realistic in the game and then critisise it when it is realistic at the same time 🙂 Obviously, I think there is work to do on the ATC, but we need to remember that just because things have been done a certain way in previous sims, that they were always correct either even if they have become a comfortable way of doing things. There is certainly less vectoring you all over the place when getting near an airport, and less handing you off to every controller on the planet along your route because you flew within a thousand miles of their control centre, which is as it should be really, ATC do not constantly bother pilots, and especially ones who are IFR and are on track and at their assigned altitude. I am sure there will be a third party ATC add-on along before too long which will improve matters. But there are always going to be some things even a fancy payware ATC add-on will not be able to do. In the meantime, if it bothers anyone, just hand off the radio duties to your co-pilot. August 24, 20205 yr How do you get it to work? I've been used to fsx atc giving you vectors from take off to final, I could fly any distance without even putting the flight plan into the gps. Colour me gobsmacked! 'Fivah' and 'ninah' (or 'fiver' and 'niner') I have heard before. If that's correct procedure though, I'm certainly not criticising it in both directions, not that I ever really was.🙂 Still sounds really silly though, especially as a Chicago Blackhawks fan so used to Pat Foley and Eddie Olczyk using every possible opportunity to say "tree" instead of "three" in their commentaries!
