Is MSFS too dark when cloudy?

Featured Replies

We got genesis all wrong.

In the begining God made the Earth and created night and day. then he made Adam and Eve. And Adam sayeth to God, "Oh God, it's far too dark under these clouds". So God brightened the darkness. Then Eve sayeth to God, "Oh God, the day is too bright, can thouest turn the the bloom down a touch". And God turned down the bloom. Then Adam sayeth to God, "Oh God, thou trees are much too tall". So God shortened the trees. Then Eve sayeth to God, "Oh God, there are bits missing upon your beautiful Earth" And God looked upon Adam and Eve and called upon the waters and drowned the lot of them!

It definitely is darker than real life below an overcast when using live weather. I reported this with comparison pictures comparing live weather in the sim with the view from my window at the same time of day to Zendesk some time ago.

This is one of my pet peeves at the moment too. The cloud shadows at noon under an otherwise clear blue sky are too dark. Way too dark.

It's not too bad when I'm flying, but it looks very unrealistic on the ground before takeoff and it makes landings harder than they should be.

I'm flying on a monitor I use for graphics projects -- it's adjusted with a hardware calibrator for color and gamma, so I know it's not my graphics card or monitor. I wonder if Asobo is calibrating the sim for HDR monitors? It sure doesn't look right on a calibrated non-HDR graphics monitor.

Yup, way too dark. Also the airports are too dark at night. I've reported both during testing and need to be addressed.

No it’s not too dark as I’ve seen it get as dark in the real world but the city lights would turn on which would be nice if they turned on in the sim too.

note this is for serious storms not Just simple overcast as some have been talking about

I agree that things are too dark with clouds overhead, One thing I do is open up the Nvidia Control Panel and under Display/ Adjust Desktop Color Settings, I change any of the following to suit my needs; Brightness, Contrast, Gamma, or Digital Vibrance.

Agreed, way too dark; otherwise the lighting is very very good; I would even turn off cloud shadows, if we could, to stop it being so dark.

Honestly I just find the HDR over exposing brightness in MSFS. and there is no way to adjust it as it locks the monitor settings while in HDR mode.

Too dark for my taste. I have never seen so little lighting on buildings and ground even in OVC.

I took this Photo last week. granted with a mobile camera (cant trust the lighting levels) but the surroundings was in no way pitch black'esque...

Well like everything else, no one is happy with anything. Real photos on phone are never going to be right levels, then there are everyone monitors are different calibration etc. Its like the topic on PFD in the FSL " are the wrong colour" well they will look different on just about every monitor because that's the way it is. I have two screens and yes there different on both, so just what do I want FSL to do? ...nothing because its down to my screens and how there set up or how good they are.

If they fix it to "your" taste then we would get another topic saying lighting is way to bright in over cast...and so it goes on.

Also it depends on the amount of overcast, IRL if its really bad even street lights can come on, sometimes its still very bright.....

Yep no apron lights. Plus the GA planes taxi/landing lights are almost non existence, lighting up almost only the underneath of the plane.

Is this why monitors have adjustable brightness and contrast levels??  After all, the human eye tries its best to adjust to different lighting levels...

I've played with every setting that might affect light and none resolve or diminish the darkness.

Sometimes when driving my car during the day, I've had to put the lights on because the instrument panel is too dark to see (analogue mechanical gauges, no fancy LED screen tech). I respectfully ask if you have used the instrument light switch and/or dome light during such conditions if the panel itself is rendered too dark due to the outside lighting?
