Should I cancel?

Featured Replies

So with that clickbait title, I hope you could help me figure out if I should cancel my order for a new processor or not. I am currently on a i7-6770k @4.4 with ht on (watercooled). It has served me well over the years, but Im wondering if maybe my 4 cores are lagging behind. I have a rtx 2080ti rog strix from Asus, and 32 gig of ddr4. I have a i9-10900k that can boost up to 5.3ghz in order, but it wont arrive at the store untill 6th of september. At this point, I am wondering if this is the best chip for msf, and whether or not I will see any performance boost. I am running a 3440x1440 ultrawide monitor, and I've set my frames to 30 and running on ultra with the fps fix for glass cockpit.

What do you guys think?

All I can say is that cores seem to matter. The sim is running surprisingly great on my Ryzen 3900x (non-overclocked), with only a 1070Ti pushing the pixels at 1440p.

I have a i7 4790k and 1060 6gb graphics and all works well as long as you have a good Internet connection and dont want ultra settings but are happy with high and medium settings

Same here on a 1060 @1920x1080

I think you also need a new motherboard with that proposed new CPU change? No doubt it will perform a lot better but so much depends on how the sim uses those extra and faster cores as to what you will see in reality. Very nice CPU that though!

I am running a similar CPU to you now - i7 6700K which is overclocked by simply using the motherboard overclock hardware switch, running full time at 4,7. Also water-cooled (Corsair H100i). Rock solid stable. As a cheaper alternative, you could try overclocking to eek more out of your current 6770K. Being a "K" processor, it wants to be overclocked. 🙂

Thank you guys. yeah, I have ordered a new mb and cooler as well 🙂 My 6700k is already overclocked with hyperthreading on.

Seems like you guys are in agreement that an upgrade will help out. I think so too.

Difficult to say. I have a related System, 2080Ti for 3440x1440. My CPU is a i7820X (HEDT) wit 8/16 Cores (HT on) @ 4.6 GHz. I reaching 25-40 fps and it seems that the GPU is the bottelneck. That's why will order a 3080 (with at least 16 GB if that is available in near future) or a 3090. But I will keep my CPU for some time.

As a pensioner I have to balance Price vs Power, so I will upgrade my GPU to an Nvidia RTX3070 which is (suposedly) twice the power and half the price of a 1080ti. This should go well with my Ryzen 7 3700X.

I have a i7-7700K with a 980ti and run on Ultra settings with no problems so far (pre and post patch) at 2K resolution. I also have 64GB RAM and MSFS is located on a 2TB NVME m.2 SSD.

Have a look here for my experience with a somewhat  similar upgrade.

Short version is I wouldn’t cancel if I were you.

Current System (Running at 4k): ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-F, Ryzen 7800X3D, RTX 5090, 55" Samsung Q80T, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, EVGA CLC 280mm AIO Cooler, Brunner CLS-E NG Yoke, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS & Stick, Thrustmaster TCA Quadrant & Add-on, VirtualFly Ruddo+, TQ6+ and Yoko+, GoFlight MCP-PRO and EFIS, Skalarki FCU and MCDU

I am very happy with the 10900K + 2080Ti combo in both P3D v4/5 and in MSFS2020.  It's a *major* step up from your current quad-core 6th-gen CPU.  I'd stay the course...

Yeah, I think that settles it. I will continue with my order, and probably be a very happy camper after a few hours of sweat and curses installing that and win10 😄

So a little update to my question/predicament: The i9-10900k has not yet arrived at my retailer. This is the 3rd time it gets posponed. For the first time in my life, I'm considering swapping to a ryzen chip. Are they any good for msf? In p3d and xp, they are kinda scoffed at because amd hasn't been much good for flightsimulators. Has that changed now, and what chip would you suggest that is equivalent to the 10900k?

Or wait until Tiger Lake is out in a month or so and buy it with a brand new 3080 or 3090 to have the latest tech. Only a month or two wait.

Im having a little bit of trouble getting updated information about Tiger Lake. Seems that the mobile cpu have already launched, but some say that the K versions wont be out untill 2021. Actually, most of the articles about Tiger Lake is talking about laptop pc's..?
