RTX 3080 - Flight Simulator 2020 Benchmarks

Recommended Posts

I posted a few months back about the new GPU's not having much of impact on FPS.

The sim itself can run perfectly fine on current hardware but it boils down to optimization. The more optimization the team can do the better the sim will run.

Not too useful a benchmark as it states nothing about VRAM use, which is where my RTX 2070 Super starts to wilt w/ its 8GB. To fly the gentle TBM930 out of FSDT KORD we had to drive down many sliders to HIGH, and that was primarily because of saturated VRAM it appeared, after which frames tank from vsync 30Hz.   RTX 3090 is in the cards for me.

Are you actually using the in-game FPS chart for vram usage?

So if the 3080 is that close to 2080Ti performance at 1440p, I wonder if the 3070 will perform almost identical at 1440p?

That depends on the rest of your hardware and the settings you are using.

If you choose 30 FPS instead of 60 FPS you also will have some extra headroom for your GPU.

The answer Is not a simple yes ...

the benchmarks are already obsolete, we need new one after ignition with the latest patch (1.8.3.0).

Got the patch installed. Thrilled with the performance with my 3770K & 2060 super

Too early to tell perhaps, but I don't see any difference except maybe CPU utilization dropped some, but it was already really low anyway.  What I don't see is any improvement in the GPU, so far.  This sim-game is very GPU limited and I look forward to a serious increase in GPU processing power.

So in the first benchmark 1440p the difference is 1 FPS with the Ultra Preset

While in the second benchmark the difference is 4 FPS with High Quality

Because at Ultra settings the LOD sliders are at 200% and they affect the CPU much more than the GPU.

🧐

The CPU calculates it but the GPU has to make them appear in the scenery. More objects mean more GPU calculating ( and more shadows )...

Terrain and objects LOD weigh on the CPU (main thread) much more than on the GPU, that's very well known by now. Many people observed that the sim is CPU limited even at 4K when the LOD sliders are maxed out. You can see it clearly from the benchmark posted here.

With a good card (RTX 2080 and above) I would recommend Ultra presets but with LOD sliders down to 100.

At the current state of development (DX 11), MSFS is not a good GPU benchmark and if you're planning an upgrade just for this game you'd better save for the next generation of CPUs which will have a higher IPC and frequency.

None of them test were done after the patch.

PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT

  • Optimized cockpit screen display when screens are not displayed on screen.
  • New option available to control cockpit screen update frequency.
  • Tweaked CPU thread priorities to reduce interruption of frame critical threads.
  • Optimized loading system to reduce overall loading times.
  • Optimized heavy airport scenes impact on CPU.
  • Reduced the amount of GPU overdraw to improve GPU performance.
  • Memory optimizations to reduce software memory footprint and improve performance on memory limited computers.
  • Overall performance optimizations.

OK, so the goal posts moved based on what the MS patch implemented.Sounds like good news.

Time for a re-test I think.... 😉
