From the markings on the Su-27 indicating where it is stationed and consequently what its patrol area would be assigned to. Or failing that, from the description on the video. If they were rocking their wings because the Bomber crew were not responding and holding position, obviously that would be different to waving the wings amd leaving, which is an obvious cheerio signal. Even when asking an aeroplane to change course or follow you there can be many reasons for that, not all of them belligerent. For example, there may be ACM training ahead, or perhaps a test of a missile or some such taking place in the area. But as I said, it was probably just a hello from the pilot. The shot where the jet passes in front is very zoomed, you can tell from the amount of cockpit visible in the frame. Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here

Having flown through the cold war period, I would have interpreted that as a neutral intent. 'Just to let you know that we know you're there'. The overhead break was not dangerously close, just a fighter pilot having a bit of fun. The turbulence was probably exaggerated by the camera. You get the same effect in formation, when line astern, if you get slightly high and catch the jetwash. And the Su27 has quite powerful engines. We used to do something similar to russian warships in the mediterranean. Approaching at moderate speed and pulling up on full power for maximum noise. They in turn used us as potential targets. We could see their guns rotating to track us. The same rocking wings signal was used to say goodbye. John B

Nope. Well I guess a kind of Cheerio. On approach you wag wings to signal the aircraft its been intercepted and must follow you. Upon leaving you wag wings and make an abrupt turn at 90 degrees. Which means clear to proceed. What you arent supposed to do is veer into the other aircrafts flightpath. Which this jet pretty much did, generating wake turbulence. You are also supposed to be careful not to alarm crew or passengers. Also of course it was international airspace so observing from a safe distance is permitted and common. But no need for a close range intercept. https://www.skybrary.aero/index.php/Military_Interception_Signalling As for the zoom. Keep watching. Toward the end it zooms back out. And it was close enough to cause wake turbulence. Edited October 7, 20205 yr by martin-w

I suppose just about everyone carries a cell phone with video camera these days. That it was hand-held is obvious. Fr. I would hazard a guess that this is directed more to civilian aircraft or even military transports rather than steely-eyed rufty-tufty bomber crews for obvious reasons. Despite the Flanker's prodigious power output, a bit of wake turbulence surely wouldn't rattle a bomber design which has been flying for decades (or Bombardier Lothar Zogg,,)? He was interviewing a former Top Gun instructor who was a back seater in F14's. He was at Top Gun when the movie was made. He said they actually attempted the famous manoeuvere depicted above but quickly realised it was a bad idea. So left it to the special effects guys to accomplish.

Yeah, and those FX guys @rsed it up royally, in placing the two canopies so close that the tails of the respective F-14 and F-5 would have been impacting one another at that proximity.
