Do I go with 1440 or 4k/ need advice!!

Featured Replies

Going to get back into flight simming. Been doing it 2000, until my 3770k crashed last Feb.

Will reinstall FSX Gold Editon 2006, and really looking forward for microsoft flight simulator 2020

It looks like I will purchasing an Alienware Aurora R11.  through Dell they have the 3080 in stock. My specs

10700k. 32gbs of 3200mghz dual action, 3080 nividia card. 1000 watts power

Thus I need some advice this cpu will be geared towards flight simming

Trying to figure out if I should go with a 4k or 1440 monitor 27 or 32 inches. My budget no more than 600.00

Please feel free and suggest any specific companies and any of your thoughts, please do.

I went 1440p G-Sync and it is a big upgrade to 1080p but not so brutal on hardware that you can't run it well.

With your rig you do 4k pretty easily in P3D or MSFS. not so sure about FSX as it hits the CPU super hard at high resolutions.

For monitors, Im using a 4K/60Hz 43" TV connected to GTX1080 via HDMI. Great price on 4K TV's right now.

your monitor was what brand ? How many inches and I like the fact it was gsync

I am capable of 4K but still nursing along a 1070 TI until the rumored 16 GB 3080 appears.  I am quite happy at 1440 in my sims.  I fly exclusively GA. Flight durations average a bit under 2 hours.  And my enroute altitudes are from 8,000 to 23,000, based on whether I am flying the Milviz 310 Redux or Baron B55, or the Realair Duke v2.  My FSX SE at 1440 has been crisp, smooth, and without issues.

My MFS flying is at this point mostly VFR and sightseeing at 3,000 to 4,000 AGL.  Again 1440.  Doing well with medium to high settings and scales set to either 100 or 120.  Only in dense areas like Los Angeles with the LA downtown scenery, the KLGB airport scenery, Disneyland scenery, and Knotts Berry Farms scenery, have I experienced any stutters.  That in either the 172 with G1000 mod, or in the G36 with the same G1000 mod and the Young performance mod.  Each of those two aircraft also with non-default liveries.

My monitor is a ASUS VG289 4K 27".  I am space managed as my flying environment is shared with life's necessary duties.

Why not a full 4K 28" with vsync at  $329, considerably less outlay.:  ASUS VG289 4K

1440 looks okay and if you are happy with how that looks then great. Don't feel pressured into thinking you must have 4K and everything else that is seen to be cool for PC bragging rights. I happily run my sims at these lower resolutions.

Higher resolutions do undeniably look nice, but you might be interested to note that Industrial Light and Magic will quite often render movie special effects for the big screen at 1080, 1024 and similar; that's because that resolution tends to match up well with the film grain by engendering a bit of convincing motion blur, especially if the live action footage it will be merged with is not shot on digital cameras.

The truth is, a lot of the 'you must have 4K', is geared toward selling you a new TV.

1440p on a 55" TV looks awesome. 4K blows my mind. But obviously there's a FPS tradeoff.

That being said, for me what made the most difference in terms of immersion was the size of the screen, not the resolution (though super crisp instrument labels are great)

I’ve never heard of anyone running such a low resolution on such a large display. Sorry, but 2560*1440 on a 55” sounds dreadful. That’s 57 pixels per inch. Compare that to a 32” running FullHD which gives 69.

Running a 55” at its native resolution of 3840*2160 gives 80. Apart from the low PPI you’ve also got the added problem of running at a non-native resolution which seriously affects image quality.

I have to run P3Dv3.4 at 1920*1080 for 32-bit Concorde on a 32” BenQ monitor and even that highly compromises the image quality when it’s a quarter of the native res.

I agree that immersion would be great though.

I think I will go with a 48"- 50" OLED or QLED when one is made with 2.1HDMI. It will not be till next year anyway before I get all my parts for the build. I am shooting for a Asus TUF 3080 20Gb and a 5900X using a MSI X570 Unify that I ordered. Hopefully all this will work well together.

In the meantime my MFG Crosswind V3 and soon to get Fulcrum yoke will suffice till I get the other parts. By that time I hope my Bravo throttle will have shipped.

I think going 4K this will be a good compromise.

I am more than happy running P3D4.5 on my Full HD LG IPS 27" at 1080p. I use Ultra res. 4096 and verything is crisp and clear. Compared to my old 17" CRT of 8 years ago, it is still magic to behold.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I am running at 4K with the render scaling at 70 or 80 (on a RTX 2060 Super). This is by far what I prefer (even over 1440p at render scaling 100). What I meant is that from time to time, I have to be on my 1080p 27" monitor (about 2.5 feet from it) and when I move back to the 55" TV (about 3.5-4 feet from it), I am still thinking "ah, that's more like it" even though I often forget right away to set resolution back to 4K. It has to do with the field of view, I just feel like I'm in the plane. But you are absolutely right, when I finally click and set the simulator to 4K, then tears of joy drip down my cheeks 😁

Also, I think we should always mention how far we sit from the screen when having these discussions about screen size.

@Turpentine, you’ll appreciate I don’t have MFS so your references to render scaling mean nothing. Can you briefly explain how that works please?

Is it some way of artificially changing resolution or the zoom factor?

Screen distance is certainly a factor especially when discussing these huge displays. I sit around 2-2.5ft from my 32” monitor.
