You can use it for IFR as well...but you're just not going to get RNAV capability

I'm new to RNAV approaches but when ATC directs me to an RNAV approach I select it in the TBM's MFD and FMS tracks the course as I would assume it should to final.  What's not working correctly for you?

Most RNAV approaches come complete with lateral and vertical guidance... the vertical guidance is not coded correctly at present.

Also, it should be possible to select an approach and load it.. which should append it to the flightplan.. that is also not coded correctly..

So, I would agree that RNAV approaches are not working correctly.

This and you should be able to select more waypoints to start the approach from.  Last time I loaded an RNAV (GPS) approach from a transition, it wouldn't fly to said transition...it just skipped it and sequenced me to the final approach fix.

So how does RNAV differ from ILS if both provide vertical guidance?  I guess it's ultimately the same thing done w/ other technology presumably.

That is what I experience also.

Correct, and once you have the gps sattelites up, much less expensive to install and maintain..

Essentially there are no differences. Often the minimums are the same. The issue is with getting all ICAO countries to agree on the laws and rulemaking, which is a chore, so they just classified them as non-precision approaches, even though many if not most or nearly all of them are as accurate as precision approaches, such as ILS approaches. In the real world the only differences relate to alternate airport selection on IFR flights and such.

Thank you all for this very helpful information. With little surprise I decided to get a prebuilt PC (I know, I know, but since I built one last, too much has changed, especially in cooling). Ended up with Ryzen 7 3700x, 3070, 16 mb DDR 4 3600 Ram. I’ll need to change out the power supply and add a second ssd drive.

Question: can someone point me to the hardware forum? I am having a hard time winding my way through the headset reviews I’ve found (didn’t get speakers so need to route sound and atc to the headset). My eyes are bleary and the info is so contradictory.

Thanks again.

I bought prebuilt too a few years ago, congratulations on your new gaming PC. Any info on the graphics card in the prebuilt. Have fun running the new sim and getting back into the hobby. Hope everything works fine for you. Let us know when you get it and what you think of MSFS? You gonna try the Game Pass or just buy it on MSFS store or Steam. And which version you leaning towards, Standard, Deluxe, or Premium Deluxe if buying it?

I believe there is another difference you have to be aware of, which might depend on the GPS device you're using and/or how it is configured: an ILS signal is essentially a cone, which means the instrument using it, for example an HSI, is showing an angular deviation from center. Whereas with a GPS, the signal is a linear deviation from center.

IIRC, the Garmin GPS can output both types and can therefore simulate an angular deviation signal making it mostly transparent with regard to how the needles are moving. This would just depend whether the HSI is connected via analog wires or via A429 IIRC.

However this is still an important factor because as you get closer to the ILS, the signal precision increases, whereas as you get closer to the GPS virtual ILS origin, the precision decreases. I'm not sure if in fact this could be the sole reason you couldn't use the GPS down below a certain height (therefore distance to the runway) with the A/P.
